Antipsychotic weight gain with Mounjaro

Hoping someone might have experiences to share. Been on Mounjaro for 2 months and soooo happy with results, really working for me with 0 side effects.

About to start Abilify (aripiprazole) for mood stability and mental health. However as with most anti psychotics a side effect is appetite increase and weight gain.

Terrified of derailing progress. Perhaps mj might offset appetite increase slightly but I still want to actively lose weight as I have been.

Anyone 🤞🏻

I’ve not been on an antipsychotic, but I am on a hefty dose of an antidepressant with the same side effects - I went on it about a month before I started MJ, gained three kilos in that month, but the Mounjaro has totally stopped all of the symptoms for me! 4 stone down since January.

Hope that helps reassure you!

I would just add, make sure your GP knows you’re on Mounjaro as gut transit time is way slowed and that can impact efficacy of some medications!

toodledo · 29/06/2025 08:03

@Bananaramram thank you so much and so glad to hear of your success.

So it is possible to not only lose weight gained in the first place from meds, but actively continue to lose weight anyway? That's my main thing as I'm starting mental health meds after starting MJ.

Yes definitely! I’m still on the meds and upped my dose, and I’m losing regularly.

@Bananaramram if it applies, did you notice you had to increase your MJ dose with increased dosage of SSRI? (Thanks again in advance!)

My provider chooses my MJ dose, but after six months, I’m still only on 7.5, so haven’t had to increase it quickly! Been kept on 5mg for three months and the same for 7.5 because my losses have been really consistent

Soontobe60 · 29/06/2025 10:04

Presumably your consultant knows about the MJ?

SkibidiSigma · 29/06/2025 11:13

I've been on that med previously (and other antipsychotics) but not since being on MJ. The main issue causing weight gain is the constant need to eat, so I would imagine MJ would counteract that.

Please make sure you've discussed it with whoever prescribed the antipsychotic

toodledo · 29/06/2025 11:51

Yes, my psychiatrist knows I'm on Mounjaro and I was upfront about that - she wasn't concerned at all

Hi @toodledo I'm on a weight gain antipsychotic but not only have I not gained anymore weight since I started mj, I'm losing consistently. So byeeeee to that horrible weight given to me by olanzapine! :)

toodledo · 01/07/2025 17:19

@PearlsPearl thank you for sharing! That's reassuring!

I'm starting on a low dose (1.25mg) and not sure how high I'll go. (But as far as I understand, higher dose = higher cravings?)

I don't have bipolar or schizophrenia, which may mean I stay on a lower dose compared to if I had those conditions which abilify is typically prescribed for...

OP posts:
PearlsPearl · 02/07/2025 09:10

I don't have those either.

I started on 1.25, did that for 3 weeks and now 2 weeks of 2mg. Working for me, I've lost over a stone. I'm going to do another week of 2mg then go up to 2.25 for a few weeks.

PearlsPearl · 02/07/2025 09:11

Oh and suppression/food noise is different for everyone. It's working great for me on this lower than usual dose. But food noise still lingers a bit but it's stopping the physical hunger which is good for me.

Orangesandlemons77 · 10/09/2025 17:59

How are you doing OP?

I was on MJ for a year and lost 5 stone of olanzapine induced weight. Possibly changing to wegovy with the price changes and also some nausea on MJ. Will see how that goes.

toodledo · 10/09/2025 20:57

Hi @Orangesandlemons77 I'm on 2.5mg of aripiprazole (slight risk of weight gain) and 150mg of lamotrigine (which is weight neutral) but so far no weight gain and continued weight loss on MJ which is great. I'm on 5mg and planning to stay here due to price rises! Thanks for asking

I have heard olanzapine is one of the bigger weight gain ones, I'm sorry! But well done on your loss!
