Low carb on Mounjaro?

CandyflossKid · 18/06/2025 07:13

I've been trying to follow a low carb diet but not really losing any weight - taking the plunge and bought Mounjaro yesterday and going to start at the weekend.
Is a low carb (high fat) diet which is fairly high in protein still.ok.or should I be looking at lower fat foods?

There’s no specific diet you need to follow on Mounjaro, so low carb is fine if that’s what works for you. Just make sure you’re in a calorie deficit.

You should be aiming for high protein (to reduce the risk of muscle loss) on mounjaro so low carb works well. Even those of us who aren't specifically low carb/ketoing end up going in that direction anyway.

As long as, like pp says, you're still in calorie deficit, which does mean being wary of too much high fat food. Also, I've realised that, for example, fat free natural greek yogurt is more protein dense so it's a better option than the full fat version for that reason as well.

However you want to make sure you keep your fibre intake up as well, to help with gut health and stop you getting bunged up which if a common side effect.

Mj effects your insulin response and so does low carb so the two work well together. I lost 2st in 3 months and from the first week of using mj.

You need to be careful about energy and blood sugar/pressure, make sure you eat every day.

I'm am experienced low carber so I didn't have any issues with the amount of fat I was eating but if you are new to it, keto can be very rich (butter, cream, cheese) which can be hard to digest on mj. See how you go.

Thank you 👍

I've low carbed throughout (did it before Mounjaro). However, I've not been able to eat nearly as high fat as I was before, as it just made me feel ill. I do also have more carbs than I used to (I used to aim for under 20 before mounjaro, whereas now I'd say some days I can be anywhere between 25-50).

It's worked well for me, and I haven't tracked calories. Husband also started mounjaro the same time as me, and he decided to track calories rather than stay low carb, and he also lost fantastically well (and is now at goal and maintaining).

I prioritize lean protein, veg, fruit. Don’t really eat any refined carbs. Occasionally a potato or half a piece of whole grain rye and seed bread, but there just isn’t space in my calorie allowance for anything that isn’t super nutritious.

I don’t eat high fat because I’d feel sick on the MJ. Plus it’s too many calories. So I have low fat quark, for example. I do eat avocados, nuts.

MJ keeps you feeling full for much longer if you eat protein. Also anything fatty, but that can also make you feel a bit grim.

Have lost 27% of body weight in 6 months, train a lot, and feel very healthy and fit.

I naturally gravitate towards low carb foods on MJ - it really is a wonder drug as I used to be a right carb addict but now I don't fancy carby or sweet foods and prefer meat/veg to eat

I can’t eat high fat on mj, it makes me nauseous and I don’t need the suppression that high fat brings as the jab does that part.

Low carb works, but not the high fat it will make you feel 🤢, so not really keto. I have no fat greek yogurt, nuts in moderation, fruit and chia when needed, lean meat, fish, seafood, sometimes a bit of wholegrain rice and pasta, oh and lots of eggs. I haven't eaten bread in 3 months or touched alcohol, the thought of either makes me feel sick, and I was a problem drinker before, I've lost 2 and a half stones.

Great info - thanks
