Really unwell after starting MJ injections

Hi, just wanted to share here as I've not told anyone in RL that I've taken the injections, even my household.

First dose was yesterday, the starter dose of 2.5mg.
Felt normal yesterday. Today I felt ok but a bit nauseous and didn't really feel like eating most of the day. Had a small bowl of cereal for breakfast, a slice of melon at lunchtime, and then a small portion meat/potato and veg at dinner. Nothing else, I've not wanted anything else.

In the evening I started with the really bad burps that tasted gross, these kept me awake. Felt sicky and couldn't sleep due to the burps - I've never had burps like it!

Fast forward to now, it's 3.40am, I haven't been to sleep yet due to the burps and then at around 3am I started projectile vomiting and completely liquid diarrhea to the point I couldn't control either of them and have ended up with bodily fluids all over the floor/walls/toilet/myself. It's super gross, I have never not managed to get to the toilet but this was coming out rapidly at both ends and was completely uncontrollable.

I'm now sat on the toilet too scared to leave it, wondering what I've done and if this is how it will be. I have to get up for work in 3 hours 😳

Has anyone else had this?? Most I've read about seem mild but this is absolutely crap and not sustainable if it continues. Feeling ashamed, tired and generally awful 😞

That’s sounds awful, so firstly phone in sick as you are sick just like any tummy bug, are you going to tell DH? Is he not in the room with you hearing all of this? Other wise I’d wonder why you haven’t told him so he can look after you?

I’ve not done injections but having read on Mumsnet many times I think you are in for a few days of this, drink plenty of fluids electrolytes, you can buy on Amazon and lay low.

If you need to lie just tell DH it’s la bug, and then decide if you will take the next dose? If it’s still bad at that level I’d say seek some medical advice.

I’ve learned the hard way that some food doesn’t agree with me whilst taking MJ. Interesting you say you’ve had melon because last week I had watermelon and instantly regretted my decision because it upset my stomach terribly, I’m on 15mg now and thought I knew all the triggers so it was a shock to have it happen again. Unfortunately there’s not much you can do right now apart from stay hydrated and definitely phone in sick. You can pass it off as a bug if you don’t want anyone to know, I really hope you get better soon!

How are you doing now OP. Anecdotally such extreme initial reactions seem rare unless you’ve eaten a final blow out meal before taking Mounjaro, but it’s not out of the realms of normal.

firstly, call in sick and say you have extreme stomach upset. It’s not untrue and you have no option. Secondly you really ought to tell someone. Unless there is a really good reason you can’t then please confide in someone - at home (if you have another adult or older teen), or whoever you can if not. In the very unlikely event you were to get sicker they need to be able to share with medical professionals what you’ve taken.

hope this passes soon, advice when this happens is the same as any gastro issues BRAT diet and small sips of fluid regularly.

It does sound extreme but yes - these are how the side effects go when I get them. About 24 hours after the injection and those three symptoms. Plus cramping. It will go away. Mine usually last up to 24 hours but some people have longer. I am not convinced it’s about the food but some people say it is.

My side effects appeared a few months in and got worse if anything. Lots of people say they get better as you go on. If you are willing to go again you could count clicks for a lower dose. It is horrible. Such a relief when the burps lose their sulphur smell. It’s like the body decides that all food in the system has to go immediately.

I am still deciding whether to quit after my last bought. It doesn’t feel worth it when it is going on.

At their worst I had side effects a bit like this, but not this bad and not at 2.5. I think you have to take the day off. Contact your provider, assuming there's a doctor involved in some form, and get some advice. It sounds as if you are so sensitive to it you won't be able to take it.

So sorry you feel this way @MummySharkDoodoododoo ,from all the reading I have done it can come down to you not having enough food in your body. Or you eating fatty foods, but you said you've not been hungry so assumed the burping is generally the first sign as the stomach acid has nothing to eat- no food. Try some dry toast,no spread, you need to get some food Inside you, electrolytes to drink also. But defo call in sick with a stomach bug . Let us know how you go 🤗

BackToWegovy · 02/06/2025 06:55

I think it’s actually the food that is in your stomach starting to rot because it’s not moving through and that’s what makes the sulphur and then your body decides that that’s not good and clears out the system quite violently in some cases.

InfoSecInTheCity · 02/06/2025 07:03

What did you eat the day before and the day of your jab?

What I’ve observed anecdotally is that those who started the diet a bit before starting the jab and who eat high protein, lots of fibre, good fats, moderate/low carb, low grease and drink about 2lts water a day, tend to have less or no side effects.

Mounjaro works in a couple of different ways

  1. simulates hormones that increase insulin production in response to excess sugar and increase sensitivity to that insulin
  2. slow digestion

If you have a gut full of food when you take the first jab then it can seem to cause stomach complaints.

obviously speak to your prescriber and seek medical help if you need it, you know how you are feeling better than any of us do. In the meantime try to get as much water as you can manage and plain bland simple foods.

BerfyTigot · 02/06/2025 07:48

@MummySharkDoodoododoo so sorry to hear that you're suffering. I can relate completely- i projectile vomited 36 hours after jab. And at the same time had severe diarrhoea which just leaked out of me onto sofa, bed.

I think you need to take the day off and get some immodium in. Keep taking it and eventually it will work.

I'm 3 weeks in now and things have improved. I take half the dose (30 clicks) and inject into thigh. I have still vomited once a week but it's controllable and not projectile. And I have to take immodium frequently. I'm hoping that my body will get used to it soon.

You can also delay the dose until you're well again.

I've been overweight my entire adult life so it's desperation which keeps me on it.

Good luck.

idrinkandiknowthings · 03/06/2025 14:06

Oh hell, OP, that's horrendous.

I've had three separate instances of vomiting, the most recent one being the worst - it happened when I was driving and I just couldn't stop it. When I got home I ran to the loo, continued throwing up and simultaneously had the trots. I seriously wanted to stop taking it after that, but it only lasted a few hours and since then I've been increasing the dosage slowly. Fingers crossed all good since.
