Vomiting and diarrhoea 11 months in?

I started MJ last July. Tried going up to 5mg in September and had V&D so went back to 2.5mg and stayed there. I made my way up to 5mg in February and was absolutely fine. I'm on my fourth 5mg pen and had been having zero side effects all that time.

Last week, injection on Monday. Sulphur burps started on Thursday. Up in the early hours of Friday with relentless diarrhoea. Took Immodium, was absolutely wiped out but it subsided. I thought it was a weird blip.

This week, exactly the same - same timing on the sulphur burps but it wasn't just diarrhoea, I was vomiting too. Have taken Immodium again, feeling terrible again.

So all of a sudden, after eleven months on MJ and four months on 5mg this is happening? And 72 hours after the jab each time.

I'm a slow and steady loser, I always thought because I've stayed on a low dose, so in all that time I've lost 4.5 stone - absolutely thrilled with this, but I still have a BMI of 31 so I still have a couple of stone to go.

I expected to be one of the lifetime MJ users. It's transformed my health and I know from bitter experience of 30+ years yo yo dieting that if I have to come off it, I will regain the weight.

But I can't tolerate V&D on a weekly basis. In awful timing, I had just ordered a 7.5mg pen arriving this weekend. I am about to go camping so am planning to skip next week's dose altogether - it's going to be rainy as it is, I'm not adding diarrhoea at a campsite toilet into the mix! But when I get back, I'll have to make a decision - try sticking on 5mg and hope it settles, or go back down to 2.5mg and hope it doesn't happen on that dose, and that I can lose or maintain on it.

I'm with Oushk so can ask them for advice. But I wondered if anyone else has had out if the blue side effects on a dose they were tolerating just fine? I can't understand why this is happening now!

Oh and it's not related to what I ate as far as I can tell, I have been eating very normally, the same kinds of food I've been having on MJ always. Yesterday I had Fage yoghurt with berries and almond butter for breakfast, a lamb and salad pitta for lunch and chicken fajitas for dinner - all things I usually eat with no trouble.

It does seem to be coinciding with possibly the peak of the medication in your system given the timing. What about an in-between dose, like 3.75mg?

Thank you, I will try that - I'm just confused by this happening now at the end of my fourth 5mg pen. It makes me worried I'm somehow becoming intolerant to the medication. The dosage isn't weight dependent, is it? As in, now I weigh less it might be stronger in my system hence suddenly causing side effects when it didn't before?

No it's not weight dependent at all. Side effects can be so random sometimes. Maybe try keeping a food diary and see if there's some common factor, even if it's something you've tolerated before.

CrimsonRedFlames · 23/05/2025 18:15

That's what I thought. It's a bit troubling! I'll try the food diary and a lower dose.

I’ve had similar, was fine very few side effects for 8 months, them on pen 3 of 10 started to get bad indigestion and side effect, vomiting, at this point I was at my goal weight, so dropped down to 7.5, I’ve been on that for 3 months everything fine, maintaining my weight, then this week have had the bad indigestion and vomiting again.
I feel like it’s my body saying it’s too strong for me, I’m going to drop down to 5 next pen and see how I get on, like you I can’t think of any food that may have triggered it.
I am hoping to eventually drop down to 2.5 and see how I go, but this last bout of sickness made me wonder if I should think about just stopping.

Itscoldouthere · 23/05/2025 21:04

Interestingly my last bout of sickness was also about 72 hours after injecting.

If you are skipping a dose you might be better starting again on the starting dose of 2.5 and see how you go from there. I believe the body quickly loses tolerance to the medication and you need to be careful of higher doses after a break.

The only 2 times in 7.5 months I've been ill was with fatty red meat, could it be the lamb?

It happened last week too, three days after the injection on a day when I ate the same breakfast, a veggie omelette for lunch and chicken sandwich with salad for dinner. So the only common thing is actually chicken or Greek yoghurt, and I'm sure it's not either of those.

That's difficult, @Itscoldouthere - the vomiting is so horrible, it definitely feels like the body saying stop! For me, I still have weight to lose and I really imagined I'd be taking this drug forever. But I wouldn't be able to manage if this continues to be a weekly occurrence. Congratulations on getting to goal, and I hope the reduced dosage works for you.

Yes, I think you are right. Wish I hadn't ordered a 7.5mg pen!

@CrimsonRedFlames Yes vomiting really is horrible, however luckily most of the time I feel fine.
I know someone up post said it isn’t weight related, but I think it is and now I weigh less 7.5 is too strong for me, as it’s so similar to what happened on 10.
I think I’m going to take 5 from my 7.5 pen for my next jab and see how I go.
Could you try taking a half dose from your 7.5 pen and maybe shorter gaps between injections, I know some people take it every 5 days, obviously once talking to your provider, I see you are with Oushk, (me too) I’d ask Hira she’s very accommodating and will understand you’ve got a 7.5 pen you want to use.
