Preparing to start - what do I need to help with any potential side effects etc?

I'm planning on having my first dose on Sunday. I'm just wondering if there is anything you would recommend getting to help with any initial side effects?? Do I need to buy any electrolyte drinks for example or anything that might potentially help with nausea? Thanks for any advice / tips.

Electrolytes are only necessary if you are severely dehydrated, eg if you get very bad D&V for several days.

I just take a multivitamin, but I always have done, so that's not specific to taking Mounjaro.

@Summerbay23 I'm only on Day 5, but my bowels have deffo slowed down.
I'm gonna start on some Senna to try help things along.
I would potentially get some rehydration sachets in, but as @SilenceInside says, you only need them if you have severe D&V.
Gaviscon for heartburn?
Windeze for excess wind?
I'm going to have some chewing gum to chew on if I get the sulphur burps. Not sure how much help that would be.
Ginger biscuits for nausea? Although Extra Strong Mints were my go to when I had pregnancy sickness. So I'll be tempted to bare that in mind.
Oh and some anti diarrhoea tablets for the obvious.

So far though, 5 days in, I have dry mouth, and some slight constipation.
I was expecting to feel lousy and was on tenterhooks the first couple days injection x x x

Why have you chosen Sunday just out of interest? Are you off on Monday? I haven’t done anything in particular to prepare and I’m very suspicious of the market that’s sprung up around it for various supplements. I personally started on a weekend so I’d not have to struggle through work if I was ill ( I wasn’t ). I experienced some constipation and initially took fibre supplement but have changed to a magnesium supplement which has resolved that. I had problems with my nails after a couple of months which I suspect was the a nutritional deficiency rather than an immediate side effect so I now take collagen & a fish oil. I don’t inject on an empty stomach but I have no idea if that helps or whether I’m just lucky.

@Divebar2021 - I've got friends coming over on Saturday night so didn't want to start before then. But yes, I've got next week off work so hopefully can be close to home in case of any unwanted side effects. I take magnesium anyway so hopefully that will help.

Ahhh ok that makes sense. I wouldn’t go too mad with the food on the Saturday night as I’ve heard it can have an effect on gastric symptoms - I don’t know if that’s true or not. ( this is in relation to greasy food not quantity necessarily). Other than that the main side effects I had were tiredness and feeling cold and that lasted a couple of months. Good luck with it all… let us know how you get on. I’m 3 stone down now and started in October.

Eat small amounts of healthy, nutrient rich unprocessed foods, with plenty of protein, fibre and healthy fats. Be aware that there is a likelihood of bone and muscle loss, as well as the expected fat loss, and adjust your diet to ensure you have sufficient protein and calcium to help with this. Make sure you exercise regularly too to help with possible bone and muscle loss. Take a multivitamin too

I’ll be starting at some point over the next few days too. I have some concerns about some users saying they experience an upset stomach if they eat cheese and other dairy products. I’m a vegetarian, so unless I’m having a meal with beans, pulses, or Quorn, I have to have dairy for some protein.

SilenceInside · 09/04/2025 14:31

Fwiw, I'm vegetarian as well, and cheese or dairy products are no issue for me at all.

PrettayGood · 09/04/2025 14:35

I didn’t take any precautions and I’ve never had a single side effect. What I eat or drink makes no difference either.

Pandimoanymum · 09/04/2025 15:10

I received my first pen today, I think I'll start friday evening, as that means ongoing I'll have the weekends to avoid having to do much if I end up having side effects.

Thanks, that’s great to know.
