Mounjaro side effects starting at BMI 27/28

I'm still on the fence about starting Mounjaro because I'm terrified of the side effects after reading lots of posts about it. I'm wondering about the experience of those with a BMI of 27/28 starting on it? I've been prescribed as I've got additional health conditions. I really do need to lose some weight and am finding it almost impossible despite best efforts. But I've got a young son so can't be in bed sick because of it.

It's difficult to say as everyone will react differently. I've been lucky and have had very little side effects, I started at a bmi of 40 so not sure If it would have been any different if my bmi was lower. I'm currently bmi 31 and still lucky not to have any

If you have been prescribed the medication and concerned I would suggest the best time to start would be the evening as you can sleep through any initial side effects.

Drink plenty of water. If you do find that you are feeling sick make sure you eat little and often. Peppermint can help with nausea or you can ask to be prescribed anti sickness tablets 💖

I started at 28 BMI, now in the 27 zone. I’ve been on 2.5 dose for 3 weeks and the only side effect I’ve had is a bit of heartburn. So far so good for me, I’ve ‘only’ lost 6lbs but very happy with that as a steady 2lb loss each week. It has been so much easier to stick to a calorie deficit and do exercise but the best thing is feeling so much more regulated with no shaky feelings pre or post food.

I started at 28 with additional health issues. Been on it since early Feb. Very few side affects, first few days I was super tired but haven’t had that in weeks. Constipation is the worst I’ve had. BMI now 26 still on 5mg.

There was a long thread previously about starting at 27 or 28, and there was no real pattern of side-effects being worse. I started at BMI 27 three months ago and had pretty bad side effects. I reduced my dose and still only take 1.6mg, I try and increase it a little and it’s not worth the side-effects. I think a lot of it is down to the fact that I have naturally low blood pressure. I’ve lost a pound a week, it’s pretty slow but it’s getting me there.

Catlady724 · 05/04/2025 22:27

I started at bmi 29 and have had no side effects. I was nervous too but nothing bad happened. The only thing I’ve had is feeling tired on the day of the jab, but if that happens just take it in the evening. No sickness for me luckily. Everyone is different but it’s worth a try! I’ve lost a stone now, one more to go.

I started at 28 BMI and the side effects were horrendous. Vomiting, nausea, diarrhoea and fatigue like I've never had before, I could barely move. Disgusting eggy burps, everything I ate made me ill despite eating healthy. I only managed 4 injections because each time I had the same side effects which never improved and I was so fed up of feeling awful. It was so bad I ended up needing time off work.

I also had some very abnormal blood tests around a month later showing issues with my liver which are still being investigated, I obviously can't say 100% this is due to the MJ but i think it is, as I've had lots of blood tests previously which have always been normal.

MJOkayy · 06/04/2025 02:42

I started at BMI 27.

Side effects have been minimal. No gastro side effects at all

Worst side effect for me has been fatigue, but it's getting better the longer I'm on mj, and tends to be worse in the 36 hours after each injection.

AmateurNoun · 06/04/2025 07:37

It seems very unpredictable. I started at BMI 30 and am now down to BMI 28 and have had zero side effects. It just feels like I have been gifted the life of a naturally slim person who isn't thinking about food all the time anymore. Others have very significant side effects.

It seems like the bad side effects may be more likely on higher doses and so I am hoping the 2.5 starter dose continues to work for me. But some people do have bad side effects even on that dose.

Thank you everyone. It's really interesting to hear the variety of experiences. Sounds like it's luck of the draw to some extent. Does anybody have any tips of reducing the symptoms e.g when you take it, what you eat etc? I'm reading a lot about avoiding raw veg and salad which is a bit depressing. I don't want to lose some of the healthy eating habits I actually do have.

I'm like you asap. I've had mine in the fridge ready to start for a while but too scared to begin in case of side effects. There's always a reason to delay it - having a bathroom renovated, hair appointment coming up....just silly things that I think "I don't want to be ill (ie vomiting/diarrhoea) before then". My BMI is higher than yours, and I too have other health conditions (likely caused by weight), so I need to start it soon.

Yes me too. Trying to find the perfect time to start when it won't be awful if I'm ill. Bathroom renovation here too, don't want to be bed ridden weyg builders in the house. Then lots of work and social stuff. I've put a date in the diary for a week on weds as I've got the day off on the Thursday. Starting to lean towards giving it a go and see what happens

Is resting heart rate a factor then?

Lolly2803 · 06/04/2025 09:51

I’ve posted on other thread but I also have a bmi of about 27. I’m 5”5 and 12 stone. I did my first dose on Thursday. Had some nausea but then yesterday I spent the entire day on the loo, couldn’t move, stomach ache and a rash over my forearms. I cannot even keep water down yet. I don’t think I’ve ever felt worse. I will never take it again as I never want to feel like that again. I totally get it is great for some people and I’m really happy for them. But guess if you don’t really need it (like me I guess) then don’t risk it. In my opinion it’s just not worth it.

Lolly2803 · 06/04/2025 10:08

This is the same as me!

Based on what I’ve experienced and what I’ve read:
small meals, eat slowly, stop when full
avoid alcohol
high fat and carby foods cause heartburn for me - so a sign to not eat them!
keep hydrated
increase protein and fibre - track your intake carefully
exercise
peppermint tea

The one with the bad side effects

Wish you luck OP. I might start Thursday evening, after the hair appointment. I’ve been waiting for the all clear on a separate health issue, which is resolved now, so I’m running out of excuses not to give it a go 🙂

Lolly2803 · 06/04/2025 18:17

Good luck! I really hope you’re one of the lucky ones. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone.

IDontHateRainbows · 06/04/2025 18:19

I got ( still sometimes get) the mj shits once a week. Take some immodium, problem solved until the following week.

The side effects of NOT taking mj, mostly being fat, are much worse imo.
