Mounjaro not working as hoped

TinyHaus · 29/03/2025 13:29

Hi All
I took my first 2.5mg dose on Mounjaro last Friday.
I experienced appetite suppression immediately and struggled to eat anything. I have been eating clean twice a day when I can. I got the Freestyle Libre CGM to monitor blood sugars as I felt so weak. I could barely exercise for the first 3 days.
Weigh day rolls around and after all the pain, suffering and discomfort (light hearted) and cost of the £57 CGM. I lost 1.2lbs.
I was gutted.

I took my next dose last night and I am hoping for a better run this time around. Please send in your encouraging stories.

My stats:
50F - menopausal
SW - 207 lbs
CW - 205.8 lbs
GW - 155 lbs
Height - 5'8

Everyone is different. I had lots of side effects on 2.5mg upwards and didn’t lose any weight/improve blood sugar until I got to 10mg.

Doggymummar · 29/03/2025 14:32

I didn't lose till 10mg either give it six months and then decide if it's working.

Azandme · 29/03/2025 14:32

You have to give it chance. 2.5mg is a starter dose, not an active dose.

SilenceInside · 29/03/2025 14:33

Expected weight loss each week is between 1 and 2 pounds which is where you are. I guess that you've seen people posting large losses on social media, or on here, and been lulled into thinking that's normal or expected.

FortyElephants · 29/03/2025 14:33

You've taken ONE introductory dose. You had appetite suppression and lost weight. What were you expecting?

Jins · 29/03/2025 14:35

I’ve been on it since early Jan and I’m averaging 1.4lbs a week. In my first week I gained a bit!

It’s better to lose slowly and 1.2lbs is great

Mounraine · 29/03/2025 14:46

I have been eating clean twice a day when I can

Could it be that the times you can’t are sabotaging your efforts?

PinkArt · 29/03/2025 15:19

You're on week one and you're on the starter dose that is designed just to get your body used to the medication, not for weight loss. You say it's not working but you've experienced quite strong suppression, which is it working. Give it a chance before you write it off for no reason!
What you do need to do though is make sure you're eating enough that you don't feel weak. That's dangerous and isn't going to lead to long term success and good habits. When suppression is high that might mean calorie dense food - I stocked up on peanut butter to help with that.

nj32 · 29/03/2025 16:25

I'm 6-7 weeks in and only lost 4lb. Have had no suppression so disappointed. I've started to slip back into old snacking habits as my motivation has subsiding. I should be ordering 7.5mg next but am wondering if it's worth it.

Cismyfatarse · 29/03/2025 16:27

I have lost just over 4 stone. But it has taken me over a year and has been slow and steady at about 1lb a week. Which means it is staying off. Think long term. It is not a quick fix.

Mysticmaiden · 29/03/2025 17:36

To lose weight, you need to be in a calorie deficit, you can calculate your TDEE online using a calculator then work out your deficit calories. Track your food on a food app like myfitnesspal. Also drink lots of water, dehydration can lead to serious side effects and mounjaro dehydrates. Also increase protein and limit carbs, carbs are stored as fat and increase bloating and water retention. Hormones also can slow down losses as do conditions like pcos and insulin resistance. Give it some time.

TheBuffetInspector · 29/03/2025 17:46

Same age as you. I was losing 1 lb a week to start with.

I hadn't really changed my diet though and there was still alcohol and food that was quite high in salt content.

I thought hey ho at least its still cing down.

3 days into my first week on 5mg - no alcohol and nothing but clean eggs, fish, salads.... I was up all night weeing and then 5lb went, just like that (sorry Tommy Cooper).

So now, on week 6? 7? I've lost a stone! That never would have happened at 50, meno and having just quit smoking too.

And yes the scales have stayed like that... I kept getting on and off... I'm back to 1lb a week, but I KNOW I need to drink more water, exercise more and I shall.
If it hadn't been for that drop, I'd be wondering if it was worth it.

TheBuffetInspector · 29/03/2025 17:49

Sorry, talking to self but overall my loss has been 2lb a week.

I definitely couldn't have done that without MJ. I'd lose 2lb, gain 2lb, yo yo due to hormone fluctuations. This is the first time I've continuously dropped lbs... It might seem slow, but it's in the right direction.

TinyHaus · 29/03/2025 18:18

Thanks lovely ladies for your stories. Its good to know I am not alone. I am definitely eating clean or not at all. I have had no treats, chocs or alcohol. That's why I was confident I was losing.
If I was eating like this without MJ I would be losing 3-4lbs a week. I lost 35lbs 18 months ago on IF. My parent got ill and passed away last summer and it knocked me off track. I gained it all back and more.
I can't find the drive to fast like I used to. So MJ it is.

Perhaps losing it at an average rate might help to keep it off.

TheBuffetInspector · 29/03/2025 18:33

I'm sorry to hear that @TinyHaus .

I think IF probably happens more than we consciously know with MJ.

I love my bed, I love reading and sleeping, if I went to bed now, I could easily sleep and not eat until lunchtime tomorrow (had last food approx 4pm).

I used to try and IF 8 on, 16 off but unless I was doing absolutely nothing, I'd be wobbly come 8-9am.

TinyHaus · 29/03/2025 18:42

Thanks @TheBuffetInspector
Yes I agree, MJ is kinda forcing me to do a 16:8 IF routine. So I am trying to make sure I eat.

It will drop off. Mine dropped off at 5 weeks. The big loss that some get in the first week or weeks.

For me, it staying off is the difference.

Emma6cat · 29/03/2025 19:22

Week.6 and lost 7lb total. 3lb in the first week but couldn’t stop peeing so guess that was water. Since then slow progress, some weeks 1lb, some nothing and one week I gained. Still only on 2.5 mg and not exercising so guess it will be very slow for me.

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 29/03/2025 19:23

I didn’t start seeing real difference until I got to 7.5mg
