People who have gastric issues

I was just wondering whether the people who get really bad gastric side effects have gastric issues before starting weight loss drugs.
I am prone to gastric issues - I have a large hiatus hernia and reactive gastritis. I don't take medication but manage any symptoms with diet restrictions. ( coffee, alcohol, chocolate etc)
The only thing holding be back from mounjaro is the potential for making my symptoms ( when I have them) worse.
Has anyone noticed a pattern?

I have IBS D, diagnosed by a gastro consultant. I found it actually helped as the drug slows down the digestion process. I'm not looking forward to coming off MJ and having the symptoms come back.

I had gastric issues following my gallbladder removal and I’ve been fine on MJ. In fact, it’s helped settle things down. I think it’s the slowing of digestion.
I do try to eat low fat though which also helps.
But no reason to assume you would get worse issues.

I had been prescribed omezaprole for the last last 6-7 years for acid reflux and had to take every morning or I would know by dinner time I hadn't I would be so uncomfortable.

I tried stopping taking it 2 months ago and haven't had to take since.

I am assuming no longer needing it is linked to Mounjaro slowing down digestion, diet changes encouraged by Mounjaro (reduced sugar/carbs, smaller meals, no diet fizzy drinks) and of course my weight loss (5.5st in 7 months).

But not everyone reacts the same, as the causes will be different. You won't know for yourself until you try.

Really positive feedback thank you.
I think I have been influenced by the negative press even though I can see just how many people have had very positive outcomes.

I have IBS and really bad issues with loose bowels but I’m on week 5 of MJ and only have a little bit of constipation (I’ve realised I don’t eat enough fiber!). I think it’s a combination of slowing down the gut and also reducing inflammation!

I was fine on 2.5mg, which I stuck with for 3 months but as soon as I increased to 5mg, my gastritis flared up quite badly. I tried 2.5mg the following week and the same thing happened so I gave up. Quite honestly the worst episode of gastritis I'd ever had on 5mg.

Catsinaflat · 15/02/2025 15:07

@UpTheAnte
I guess 3 months is a good start - have you gained since stopping?
@Bananaramram
I have reactive gastritis a large hiatus hernia and ibs. I think the hiatus hernia will be happier if I lose weight and the ibs can be triggered by anything but I think the inflammation lowering aspect is definitely going to be beneficial.

I had to give up after a week, I had all the symptoms of gastritis, pain, feeling of over fullness (I struggled to even drink water) I couldn’t stop burping etc. I usually have dodgy bowels anyway and this did slow a little but I had orange mucus instead and smaller amounts of loose stool.
I hated how it made my stomach feel, I was really uncomfortable for about 3-4 days then it gradually wore off.

I had no gastric issues, but after 3months on mj, they started. Vomiting, pain without eating much. I took omeprazole, for 2 weeks, it went away.
i restarted on 2.5, and after a month the symptoms returned.
stopped mj
taking omeprazole again, have gastritis,

really want to go back on mj, only halfway through my weightloss journey, but worried now as had no ailments, took no meds previously.

BackToWegovy · 16/02/2025 07:41

@Ilovethewild maybe give Wegovy a try. It is a different drug. Hope your gastritis goes away. Mounjaro made me really ill (about four months in) but fortunately for me no lasting effects and I am tolerating Wegovy fine.
