Mounjaro and alcohol?

Has anyone who usually drinks alcohol found that MJ has curbed the urge to do so? I actually already gave it up quite a while back (was getting too reliant on my post-work couple of glasses of wine!) but DH drinks quite a lot - definitely a lot more than is healthy. I think a lot of his weight gain is due as much to the cider as the food tbh!

I'm hoping he'll join me on MJ (when I start seeing results and finally work up my courage to confess that I'm on it 😅) as he's pretty large/obese, and it'd be amazing if it limited drink cravings as well as food...

All the articles etc I've found by googling just focus on whether it's dangerous to drink while on MJ/clinical interactions between the two, so any personal experiences would be great!

Why are you hiding the fact you're using it from your husband?

ruethewhirl · 07/02/2025 14:09

I'm finding myself wanting less, but that's partly because I've been experiencing heartburn since being on the MJ and booze exacerbates it.

When I do drink, I'm also finding it goes to my head quicker, but that's probably just because I'm eating less.

Purely personal reasons, DH is generally quite sceptical about stuff like this (he'd probably assume it was a fad or a con) and I wanted to be sure it actually worked before telling him. I'm only just a week in and seeing results so will tell him after my firstly weekly weigh-in!

Thanks! Yes, I have read that the side effects can be exacerbated so am hoping that'll be a deterrent too...

I'm not telling my husband either, no one in fact and been on it 6 months, its a personal choice- but in answer to your actual question, I've gone right off alcohol. The difference is mad. I just don't want it, don't think about it, actively try not to go places where I normally would have drunk. It's becoming a problem round friends who were used to me socially drinking and I'm just not bothered by it now.
I had alcohol for the first few months on it, never excessively, and I just didn't fancy it and felt horrific the next day, so stopped. Good luck on your journey

Feb2025start · 07/02/2025 14:26

Thanks @GingerGirl4549! That sounds really really positive. With DH I think he gets 'booze noise' in the same way many of us get (or got!) 'food noise', in that he's not drinking out of dependency/need or a desire to actually get drunk, he just does it out of habit. Hoping it'll work the same way for him as it has for me in shutting the noise up!

GingerGirl4549 · 07/02/2025 14:32

I was quite similar to him I feel. I never had alcohol daily or anything, I could go 10-14 days with none and then get alcohol noise as such, and I'd want a drink or 5 lol (i suppose some would say i was more like a binge drinker) but just don't get that feeling whatsoever now. Hope it works like that for him too

Verlaine · 07/02/2025 14:33

It’s not really curbed my desire for wine apart from on the injection days when I’m too full. Maybe it has a bit but not significantly

IReallyNeedThisToWork · 07/02/2025 14:38

I was a daily drinker for years. It was my coping mechanism. After a few weeks on MJ, the ‘need’ for wine wore off. I still drink occasionally (had a beer or cocktail every day on a recent holiday!) but I can take it or leave it and find a couple is enough. I have a friend who is taking it mainly to curb her drinking and smoking!!

mjuser · 07/02/2025 14:45

I'm not a regular drinker, just a social one, but I've found that despite really looking forward to having alcohol when the occasion arises, I just can't be bothered to have more than two drinks. I've never had any ill effects.

Losingthetimber · 07/02/2025 16:34

I can drink fine on it, no difference in hangover etc, but I just don’t want it, so will drink when socialising, but I never really have anything at home now. I used to drink a couple of bottles a week, stressful job, reach for the wine, I simply don’t get that urge any more. When socialising I do also limit it too, But in a discreet way , drink slower, have more water, soft drink in between kind of thing.

i guess a fair summary would be I don’t feel like it and it does nothing for me.

WhoWhereWhatWhy · 07/02/2025 16:39

I just don’t want alcohol whilst on i lt either. I think I’ve had maybe 15 drinks is in six months. And obviously that included Christmas and new year. It’s a horrible sensation for me to sort of feel that I’m forcing myself to drink just to be sociable, so I just don’t.

I am experiencing heartburn/stomach acid on MJ too, so I am actively avoiding anything that makes that worse. And alcohol does that. Two is my absolute limit.

It’s an amazing drug.

Feb2025start · 07/02/2025 16:46

Thanks everyone 😊

@Losingthetimber this - 'I guess a fair summary would be I don’t feel like it and it does nothing for me' - is exactly what I'm hoping for!

do they all think you’re just losing the weight through willpower, and you hide your pens, needles and sharps bin, inject when no one can see you? Is there a reason can I ask?

I told my husband as soon as I thought of doing it, then told my daughter I was thinking of it. Then discussed with my gp, then told them all when I ordered etc, discuss it regularly and also told my best friend. But no one else, as they are the only people I trust enough not to judge me, to respect my decision and to support me. They are like my personal cheerleaders. Inc the gp,who is delighted with my progress.

i do worry that if people don’t tell those closest to them, it indicates that they don’t have a strong support network of people who love and respect them enough not to judge.

AmythestBangle · 07/02/2025 18:50

It's quite amazing. I was a daily wine drinker for a long time. Well known for absolutely loving my red wine. About a month before I started MJ I stopped drinking for health reasons. I managed to stay off but it was a real struggle and I craved it every evening. Started MJ a month a ago and I have from the start had no desire to drink wine (or any other alcohol) at all. I have never felt like this in my adult life, even when I was pregnant I found it really difficult to resist drinking (I did though, of course). Now it's not even an issue.

AmythestBangle · 07/02/2025 18:52

I kind of wished I hadn't told DH at the beginning (I haven't told anyone else) as he did see it as probably a fad/craze etc. Now I have lost 5kg in a month, don't drink and have come off my HRT because my hot flushes have disappeared like magic, he is not so sceptical!

Is your friend overweight too and that's how she got it?

bugalugs45 · 07/02/2025 19:24

I'm drinking less , not because I have no desire to but I'm making a significant effort not to .
I could easily still drink on it , it hasn't curbed my desire / cravings for wine at all, but I've cut back to only drinking a single glass 2/3 nights a week

NothankyouNigel · 08/02/2025 07:09

This was partly the reason why I started MJ as I’d heard it could be really helpful in curbing the wine noise. Obviously I’m overweight, and wine was exacerbating the situation - I didn’t drink excessively, maybe 1 bottle a week but when I did I also overate. I had tried to give up for years and just couldn’t do it. I’m so happy to say that it has worked. I’m 5kg down in a month and no longer have the compulsion to drink.

My plan is to stay on it until I hopefully get to goal weight ( maybe 5 months or so ) which will hopefully be enough time to properly break the habit of reaching for the wine on a Friday/ for a treat/ when I have a good day/ when I have a bad day etc etc.

Slibberydibbery · 08/02/2025 07:55

It’s amazing how it’s changing people’s relationships with alcohol. Many people have no idea just how catastrophically bad for you it is -even in small quantities. Embrace the lack of desire for it, long term it’s a double whammy health benefit of MJ (along with the weight loss).

shrinkingthiswinter · 08/02/2025 09:56

Yes, I don’t feel like a drink anymore. Did actually have some last night because I was at a place with really fantastic cocktails, but that’s the first time I’ve had more than a few sips in 2 months

Zempy · 08/02/2025 10:02

I couldn’t possibly drink wine.

However, I did manage a few vodka’s on a night out recently, and felt fine the next day.

Am out for lunch today and will probably have two or three drinks and will really enjoy them, but have no cravings or thought about alcohol when at home.

Soooooooverthisnow · 10/02/2025 22:02

I'm drinking less because I just don't really want it. Or I want one then no more. This is one of the reasons I chose a Friday as my jab day. However, on my 2.5mg the effects were wearing off by day 4 and I went out on a Thursday night (planned) and had wine. The next day my hangover anxiety was through the roof. Horrendous. I used to get a bit of anxiety after drinking before I started MJ but this wS something else. Lesson learned.

I know you posted this nearly a year ago. But I was wondering if you have an update? I'm thinking of starting MJ for weight loss and to detach from using wine as a relaxing/coping mechanism. If/when you stopped using MJ, did a desire for wine return or had the habit been broken?

WaverleyOwl · 14/01/2026 17:47

@macbethany I'm not the person you were asking, but thought my experience might help you (and others).

I have (had?) a real problem relationship with alcohol. At it's worst, 2 bottles of wine a night. Every night.

I started mounjaro last week, and the difference it has made to dull the 'alcohol noise' has been incredible. I've not touched a drop since I started, and my desire is basically nil.

Obviously it's early days, but I'm really hopeful this will continue.

I'll try to check back in here in a few weeks/months, and update.
