Hi,
Im petrified of needles so my parents did the first dose without me looking. Should the area feel a little bit sore and achy after? It went in my tummy. X

It can do. I suppose if your parent did it, they might have pressed harder than if you'd done it yourself. It's nothing to worry about though.

The pen is really designed for self injection. I've been using 30 weeks now and not sure if I'd get the right position to inject someoneelse, I'd probably need to sit behind them! They maybe have just got the angle wonky/used too much pressure as it is usually painless.

It is worth trying yourself next week (do without the pressure of an audience). I am a needle wimp too and couldn't believe how easy it actually was.

Thank you for the msg. They have done it lower right tummy and was following the instruction leaflet. There is no way I can do it myself as I’ve got a serious phobia but pushing through it as I have to do something. Took me 20mins to get in a place to allow them to do it. I can’t look at it myself but my husband says there is a tiny red dot where the needle went in. Does that sound right? Does this look like an ok location for it?

Yep, it's all fine. I'd try to stop focussing on it now and distract yourself with something else.

Took me an hour to do my first one after tears, shaking and swearing, I still look away as the needle goes in/comes out but once in I can look at the pen ok.

I found numbing the area with something from the freezer (not needed, but helps mentally), then just doing it before it warms up (longer I leave it the more I wind myself up). So it goes something like this -

Put on needle and prime pen, turn dose knob to 1. Don't focus on needle.
Sit pen upright and numb stomach with something from freezer
Hold pen in hand with thumb on dose knob position needle to where you want to inject
Don't delay next step it only makes things worse, you know it won't hurt so just do it
Look upwards and slowly stick in, first thing you will feel is the pen end touching your tummy
Pause, breath, there is no needle to see so look down, relax
Slowly push down dose knob
Count to 10
Look up and pull needle out in one smooth movement
Smile 😊, then go tell your parents you are a superwoman!

Honestly if I can do it, anyone can!

please make sure you use an antibacterial wipe op, to wipe the injection site ie your tummy, and the red area on the pen, the bung basically, you attach the pen needle also.

SilenceInside · 18/01/2025 22:06

@Shrinkingrose you don't need to use an antibacterial wipe on the skin, you need to use an alcohol swab on the pen bung. But that's clear in the instructions, which were followed according to what the OP has said.

Most instructions say do the skin also.

SilenceInside · 19/01/2025 10:13

The only instructions that are relevant are the ones on the patient instruction leaflet that comes with the pen from Eli Lilly, which don't instruct you to swab the skin of the injection site.

It's not a big deal, but the OP is clearly anxious about the injection process, and I just wanted to point out that it's not in the instructions to swab the skin. It's not a necessary step and it's not a step that's been missed or an instruction that wasn't followed.

Instructions from el,Lilly don’t even say to wipe the pen. Never mind the injection site. Both are advisable.

Those are the US instructions for the singe use pen. I think from the description of the pen it already has a needle attached, hence no need to clean the seal, because there isn't one.
