Hair loss

Has anyone experienced hair loss as a result of weight loss injections?

I have been on them since not long after they were available to buy privately in the U.K. initially, I noticed my hair was thinning, which felt like a small price to pay, but now I’ve developed a small patch on the back of my head that looks almost bald.

I’m getting really worried now. If anyone has experienced this can I ask what you did to combat it?

I have had a period of hair loss, having been on Mounjaro for 6 months. It's not very helpful but I actually didn't do anything specific to try and combat it. I take a multivitamin daily, but I always do. In the last month or so the hair loss has noticeably slowed down and I would say it's almost back to normal.

I know lots of people recommend collagen supplements but I can't take those as I'm vegetarian and by definition collagen is an animal product. I also don't think there's much evidence for it actually helping. The hair loss is related to weight loss itself, not specifically Mounjaro, and I'm not sure there's much that can be done to address it. The hair loss is called telogen effluvium, and it normally resolves itself within 3 to 6 months.

I have been loosing my hair since my second pregnancy (10yrs ago now!) and am hoping mounjaro doesn't accelerate that. But there are daily clumps in the shower (no more since starting mounjaro so far though!)

I've found that caffeine shampoo (the one in the black bottle!) and that really expensive 'over 40 plantar' conditioner in the green bottle seems to slow down the clumps falling out, especially if I leave the caffeine one in for a couple of minutes before rinsing

(though who knows, it could be placebo!)

My hairdresser told me never to take weightless injections as she had many clients using them with serious hair loss issues. That was enough to put me off as I already have very thin hair!

Being morbidly obese outweighs hair loss. Especially when it usually resolves itself in 3 to 6 months. I wouldn't take any health advice from a hairdresser.

I have had a degree of hair loss. Not only that my natural curly bouncy hair became lank and straighter.

I believe planter 39 in the green bottle is good for encouraging new hair growth although I haven’t used it. I have been using Nioxin and there is a noticeable improvement .it has 3 steps, cleanser, scalp therapy and treatment and iis much more expensive but in my experience, it works!

I had a few weeks a while ago but it's stopped again now.
I take Biotin daily, not certain it helped but I thought it was worth a try.

I have had hair loss but only noticed when my hairdresser pointed out the new baby hairs coming through. It's a common effect of any weight loss and not unique to MJ.

I take biotin and zinc supplements. They clearly didn't stop the loss altogether but the new growth seems to have come through almost immediately.

With the cost of all these fancy shampoos, on top of the cost of the injections, and the hair loss and other side effects, this mounjaro better flippin work!!!

SevernWonders · 18/01/2025 22:09

I lost loads of hair at the beginning but it has slowed down now and I have lots of little hairs starting to come through now.

Lola3034 · 18/01/2025 23:13

I seem to be loosing hair as well but at the same time have plenty of baby hair growing to the point that I had to start wearing headbands just to tame the baby hair and look civil 🙃. Been on Mounjaro since August

Two things:

  1. it’s not the weightloss injections, it’s the weight loss itself.
  2. it stops.

I have been on MJ for 8 months now and the first 4 months I was losing weight quite quickly which resulted in hair loss, which while unpleasant is quite normal when losing weight quickly, regardless of how you lose it (injections, diet, stress, etc.). I have since slightly upped my calories to ensure I lose at a slower steadier pace and I’d say the hair loss has stopped. It probably started slowing down after about a month or so of slower losses.
I didn’t do anything else to combat it but I do take daily multivitamin and supplement for skin, hair and nails (I always have). And while these didn’t stop it from happening, they haven’t hurt either. Hope this helps!

My hair has started shedding badly as my ozempic has suddenly become more effective again after a long plateau (difference being I’ve significantly increased cardio workouts).

I assume I’m low in certain nutrients as I’m not eating much or burning too many
calories. I think I’ll have prioritise highly nutritional food … smoothies etc.

To add minoxidil slows hair loss but it’s expensive and has to be used everyday.

As others have said, hair loss is a side effect from weight loss, not from the injections. About 6 years ago I lost 4 stone naturally and had a lot of hair loss and the same thing has happened this time around. Don't let it put you off WLI unless you care more about your hair than being obese.
