Mounjaro going from 2.5mg to 5mg - advice please

I recently started Mounjaro and was wondering whether or not to stay on the same dose or to up it to 5mg once I come to the end of the month and look to get my next pen.

I have felt fine on the 2.5mg apart from a little nausea but nothing severe. I am worried that going up to the next dose will potentially give me some of the horrible side effects that I’ve read about!

How have you felt upping the dose? Have side effects been bad? Really interested to know.

I would definitely order the 5mg because they are usually the same price. That way you can just take half a dose (30 clicks) and if you feel the need to increase your dose over the next month you can, rather than been stuck with a 2.5mg pen

I’ve worried every time I increase but I’ve been lucky so far. 2.5mg is not considered a therapeutic dose so I would definitely recommend moving up to 5mg.

I officially went up to 5mg, but have been taking 3.75mg. So far I’ve had 4 x 2.5mg, and 9 x 3.75mg.

This has worked well, and I’ve lost on average 1kg a week. I’m two days off my next injection and am sitting here feeling hungry, so am considering now finally going up to 5mg.

I didn’t go up and in hindsight I should have. I lost weight well first 6 weeks on 2.5mg, week 7-8 my suppression had gone down a lot. So feel that I’d have had better results actually following instructions.

I’m on 5mg pen now, did the first dose at 3.75 and I reckon I should have done the full 5. I’m not experiencing any major side effects on either dose aside from waking up with dry mouth, and feeling colder than usual.

I would perhaps consider, in your shoes, getting the 5mg pen (same price) and dosing 3.75, and seeing how you feel. You can dose 2.5 from it as well, so you have more options all in all if you feel a dose is too high/low.

I was fine right up until 15mg. Even then I didn’t have vomiting just horrendous all night diarrhoea and sulphur burps. I’m back on 12.5 now and still having a bit of diarrhoea so will start back on 10mg I think

The cost difference between a 2.5mg pen and a 5mg pen is usually minor so worth buying a 5mg pen for your next pen.

If 2.5mg is working for you, you can continue to take 2.5mg from the pen using 30 clicks (a full dose is 60 clicks/0.6ml), but having the 5mg pen means you have the option to increase mid month if you want to.

If you want to go up a dose but nervous of side effects doubling to 5mg you can do something in-between such as 3.75mg which is 45 clicks.

I have been on 3.75mg for nearly 6 months now as it works well for me, and it also means I get 5 doses out the pen within 30 days without having to break the pen to access the 5th dose.

Hi! Have a look on various threads, as there are some cool charts. But basically, each full dose from any pen is 60 clicks. So, 45 click is 75% of a dose. 75% of 5.0mg is 3.75mg.

Please note - you need to double check this, as mistakes are exactly why this approach isn't actually recommended.

You said 5 doses within 30 days, do you inject every 6 days rather than for 5 weeks?

It's works for me for 16 weeks with no increase.

You can buy extra needles from one of the online pharmacies (possibly the same one you get your pen from). No you don't take it every 6 days but on day 1, 8, 15, 22, 29. So 5 doses within 30 days.

When I have counted my last two pens I found the pen locks around 257-ish clicks (including priming clicks).

Taking 3.75mg (45 clicks) I get 5 doses without the pen locking. The doses 7 days apart would be on days 0,7,14,21,28 so within the 30 days. I take a 6th dose on day 35. Up to you to research and decide if you want to take the risk of going over 30 days.

If you do not have enough spare pen needles for a 5th dose from your supplier you can buy boxes online from pharmacies, medical suppliers or Amazon. I googled and bought a box of the Novofine 6mm pen needles as they were the needles my first supplier was sending.

If you want to use the remain liquid after a pen locks google 1ml 8mm 32G syringes and buy from a medical supplier (not amazon as they cannot sell human grade syringes) such as uk medi. If you cannot face a 8mm needle you can also buy separate luer lock syringes and smaller needles from places like uk medi.

Depending on your provider, some will challenge you if you do not order every 4 weeks.

anyone know if you can take two 2.5ml doses? I need to go up to 5ml but have two doses in my 2.5ml pen left?

I always think I'm going to drop dead after each injection but I don't 😂

How many 2.5mg doses have you had?

I’ve stayed on 2.5 for months because it was working. I’ve just gone up to 3.75 and that’s working great as the 2.5 just wasn’t working as well. You could always do a half way increase. Count the pen clicks.

@Time4changeagain its my second pen. I was doing ok for the first 4 doses so reordered another 2.5mg pen had two doses out of it and food noise started so I have two doses left in my second pen which I want to take as a 5ml dose and wanted advise? X

@MrsCob888 Id try 3.75mg as @ToriiMj advised above. You could get 2 doses of 3.75mg out of the pen (using the bonus dose) before moving up to 5mg for your next pen.
Don’t get the mg and ml confused, A full dose of any pen is 0.6ml
