Have I frozen my injection??!

Hello!

In a bit of a panic. I am travelling from London to Coventry today by car. My first 7.5mg dose injection was delivered yesterday and I stored it in the fridge overnight.
I usually inject very late on a Friday night and so I couldn't afford for the injection to come to room temperature in the car. Before I set off, I put my injection in a thermos bag with two ice packs. I am now TWO hours into my journey and I suddenly had the thought what if putting the injection in with ice packs has FROZEN my injection. I have taken the injection out and inspected it with my phone torch light (I am the passenger in the car and it is dark on the motorway). I can't see the solution in the injection move... But then it is a brand new injection, should you be able to see liquid or a bubble if it is a full injection? Or it could be because it's dark.. or it could be because I've foolishly frozen it.

Can one freeze things with ice packs? The pen is in its storage box which is made of plastic.. the interior of the thermos feels as cold as a fridge as opposed to a freezer.. I've now opened the bag and left only one ice pack in there.

I can't wait to get off the motorway and into a well lit hotel room to inspect properly. Panicking. I know you can't freeze these pens and now I'm terrified I've compromised it.

Any advice hugely appreciated x

I feel so so foolish :(

I doubt that will have frozen it. Mine comes delivered in an insulated package with ice packs in it.

Are the ice packs rock solid? Mine also comes delivered with ice packs but they're cold and not frozen solid when I receive them. The ice packs in my thermos are rock solid 😭

Yes, they are always still about 90% frozen when I open the package. I very much doubt it could freeze the injection.

If you are going to inject tonight it would have been fine in the car at room temp.

Do you think if I take my pen, I could just pay for new one at the local Asda pharmacy? I use Voy and the have been monumentally unhelpful.

They have told me not to use it and wait until Monday for a clinician to troubleshoot. They also can't send a new one out because for that to happen I would need to speak to a customer service advisor as opposed to my "coach". And customer service is closed until Monday now

I didn't know that 😭 I packed it with the ice packs they used so I think it is ok. Even though Voy have advised against it.

I'd just use it. Voy are just being cautious.

Belindabelle · 06/12/2024 18:19

My understanding is as long as it’s still clear and not cloudy it’s not been frozen and will be fine. In order for the liquid to freeze the temp would need to be significantly below zero for a prolonged period of time. But obviously imam in no way an expert on this.

MelainesLaugh · 06/12/2024 18:19

As long as the liquid isn’t cloudy it will be absolutely fine to use

NCMJ · 06/12/2024 18:32

I took it out and into the hotel fridge and it's been colourless all this time. In the car when I checked it in the dark it was also colourless.

Take it out the fridge and leave it out

IReallyNeedThisToWork · 06/12/2024 18:34

If it had frozen, there would be icicles inside it and you'd be able to see them. If it's in a case and not literally sandwiched between two ice packs it will be ok. TBH, even if it was sandwiched, it would still be very unlikely to freeze if wine is anything to go by!

NCMJ · 07/12/2024 00:10

DH also reckons it didn't freeze. He is 100% sure it didn't. Not that he saw it whilst we were in the car. But he's just saying given it was in a plastic box in a foam pen holder with two ice packs it just wouldn't have happened.

I'm terrified if it did even partially freeze (given it's such a tiny amount of liquid) I'm just now injecting poison into me. Plus I've eaten badly tonight (lasagne).. and coupled with dose increase, I'm so scared of side effects. I wish I'd eaten a bit more healthily at least. Argh, I'm full of nerves!!

I'm with your DH. It was in a storage box, with ice packs, in an insulated bag. That's basically how they come from the prescribers.

Ice defrosts slowly, that's why they keep things cold for a long time. Think of them as releasing a little bit of cold at a time - not enough to freeze a pen in a box next to them.

@HippoPortlyMouse @IReallyNeedThisToWork @MelainesLaugh @Belindabelle @Orangesandlemons82 @hopeishere thank you for your advice everyone, I really appreciate. I just bit the bullet and did it 🤞

Mine sat at back of fridge and the cardboard box froze. I was worried I've frozen the jab maybe.
Boy said I should bin it and buy another.
I thought it was probably unlikely to have frozen so I took it and lived to tell the tail.
If it's in a box I think it's very unlikely.

Chloe42 · 07/12/2024 21:14

Voy, not boy

NCMJ · 07/12/2024 23:19

Thanks @Chloe42
It's nearly been 24 hours since I took it and so far so ok!

On a side note I found Voy really unhelpful with the whole process and am re-evaluating continuing with them. The entire reason I opted to pay a bit more was for a better customer service experience and support.
