My pen's broken - help.

Hi everyone, my pen has broken and there's a final dose in there.

I have a memory of people mentioning they had bought needles and removed the liquid from thier pens using those - or have I lost my mind? I've search and not found anything.

If the above is accurate, can anyone tell me how it's done and what I need to order?

TIA

It's done the 4 doses as intended, so it wasn't broken. It has become broken in the attempt to do a 5th dose that the pen wasn't designed to do. Presuming that by "final dose" you mean the remaining medication after using the pen for the usual 4 doses, and not dose number 4.

Thank you for explaining my situation to me. I can't see any answer to my question in your response.

You don't need answers as you have the only possible options already. Try a new needle, or buy syringes. That's it. I was explaining what @pointlesspoints meant when she said that the pen worked as prescribed. Assuming you have done 4 injections, and you are trying to use the remaining medication for another dose, that isn't entirely clear.

Are you trying to get the 4th dose of that pen out or the 5th?

The fifth, she’s broken it to get the fifth bonus dose but it doesn’t plunge. About half the pens do this. So she needs insulin needles to withdraw and inject herself,

Not sure I understand this. It isn't pushing the liquid through the needle - not sure that's 'working as prescribed'.

You have had the 4 prescribed doses, so therefore it worked as prescribed.

Yes, that’s what I was thinking. You can’t always get the 5th dose straight out of the pen.

I was confused by the ops posts. It has worked as described. But it’s not dispensing the extra, which means it’s doing as the manufacturer intended.

Wouldn’t surprise me if Eli lily come up with a way to stop people getting the 5th dose.

If you use an insulin needle to take out the ‘extra’ dose is there anything you need to be aware of? I assume press a little of the dose out to make sure there are no air bubbles? And use an alcohol swab wipe over the red rubber end before inserting the insulin needle?

Bought some syringes a while ago from Amazon labelled as sterile, for insulin, measuring tools. I wanted to look at them and decide if I'd use them or not. They were great. Individually wrapped. Hypodermic needles and medical grade. 32g 6mm 1ml so as thin as the thinnest pen needles I use and 2mm longer which i was apprehensive about but made little difference. Only tried them once and wow! I was surprised they felt much better than the pen needles, and this is coming from a needle wuss! I'd be happy to use them now if I need to.

There are so many on Amazon though so you really can buy who-knows-what. I only went with Amazon because it was very important to me to find 32g thin and shorter 4mm needles (as well as the right kind, sterile, etc) and medical suppliers all seem to sell the thicker needles (31g, 30g, 29g, etc) or longer needles from 8mm, etc, when I looked. I bought extra pen needles and swabs from medical suppliers because they had the type I need.
