Hair loss on Mounjaro

FitsLikeAGlove · 10/10/2024 20:46

Greetings all.

I'm 41 and have gone from 15st to 9 stone over 18 months. (I'm short)

I'm on 15mg and was planning to titrate back down the doses to a maintenance dose over the next few months.

I eat healthily - greek yoghurt, fruit, fish, dark chocolate. And I have regular periods. Don't think I am peri yet.

I've got lots of hair (hairdressers tell me the hairs themselves are not thick but I have lots of individual hairs) but in the last few days have noticed more of it than usual in the plughole after washing it (twice a week) and in general coming out when I touch or brush my hair. I am also moving house so could be stressed re that but I've never experienced hair loss before, even during previous diets/stressful events.

Any thoughts or experiences? Thanks.

BTW I would still rather be slim with less hair than obese with more hair!

In order to lose weight we have to eat a deficit of calories and with Mounjaro it's easier to eat a significant deficit. The thing is that our bodies need a certain amount of calories and nutrients in order to deliver on all of its basic functions and it will prioritise.

So your body will keep you breathing and your blood pumping before it worries about holding on to your hair.

So you need to be eating enough calories to meet your BMR (Basal metabolic rate) and you may need to add in a good multi-vitamin if you aren't getting all your nutrients from diet.

I'm also on MJ, thankfully and happily prescribed it for Diabetes and I think it's an amazing drug. It's eliminated the need for me to take insulin and Metformin and im losing weight, it's brilliant. I make sure I eat 1400 calories a day, I take cod liver oil for my creaky joints, a multi vitamin for perimenopausal women, collagen and psyllium husk for added fibre to stop constipation.

So far my hair seems to be doing ok, if that changes I'll need to re-assess and may add in Iron and Vitamin D.

Thanks @InfoSecInTheCity

Google is telling me it will just be temporary and it will grow back in time.

Still a lot better than being pre-diabetic...I'd rather lose hair than my eyesight and my limbs!!

It is indeed temporary! Like you, I have a huge amount of hair but have been shedding more than usual 😩 It does seem to be slowing a little now though 🤞🤞

A few years ago I was really stressed re a job move and got shingles.

Maybe it's the moving house more than the drugs.

My poor wee body has been through a lot! Not to mention my MIND!

I’m experiencing the same. It’s very common when losing weight, but it is usually temporary! It’s also common to lose more hair in autumn than at other times of the year.

Same here, I first noticed it in July and it's still happening. Am about to titrate down off the injection so am hoping it will stop now.
Congrats on your weight loss

I have suffered from thinning hair for years. Photos of me in May were shocking. So it is not particularly MJ related as I started MJ in early July.

I have recently bought a 'hair topper' which looks fab but I am quite self conscious about wearing a hair piece and looking so different/amazing.

I have also bought some 'Blend and Boost' hair fibres which works quite well and disguising my thinning hair at the front and top.

Hello, I’ve recently been experiencing hair loss since starting MJ in May 25 - as this is an older thread and time has passed I’m wondering if any of you can share if your hair regrew (or not) I’m so worried about loosing more!
thank you

Onceaponceatime · 28/08/2025 00:05

Mine regrew within a couple of months and is fine now. I did worry I was going to go bald at one stage. Not sure if it is the MJ or just Losing weight ( Relatively) quickly.
