Stopping breastfeeding to start treatment

Hi all - very new to this board but I haven't found a similar thread. I'm in the very early stages of thinking about starting Mounjaro. After 2 pregnancies my BMI has soared from 32 to 37 and now 40. My youngest is 10 months and I'm breastfeeding. I know you can't breastfeed while on Mounjaro - has anyone else recently stopped breastfeeding and started taking it? Any tips or advice?

(I do think now is a good time to stop bf as DC is losing interest anyway during the day and only wants a night time feed really. So logically I know it's not a bad thing to stop but part of me does feel guilty too...as though stopping because I want to lose weight is vain somehow? But it's also for my health. I just can't continue at this size. I did lose a ton of weight and got very fit between pregnancies but gained 3 stone this time and just haven't been able to shake it.)

Thank you all.

I stopped breastfeeding 3 weeks ago and started mounjaro 2 weeks ago. My toddler was 2.5 yo though and that's the age I breastfed my other children to.

Personally, I wouldn't have stopped breastfeeding just to start mj, but obviously that's your own decision to make.

Does your baby take formula? As you would need to give formula until 12 months if you stopped now. It maybe worth waiting until 12 months when you switch to cows milk and skip n the formula completely.
You could start now with the aim to stop then as you need to drop feeds to for your comfort.

Take it one step at a time, stop bf when you are ready, give yourself a couple of weeks to make sure your body has adjusted to stopping bf so if you have any post lactation issues they are not confused with MJ side effects.

With your high BMI (I was higher when I started) you are going to be on MJ for a long time, taking your time and a few extra weeks won't make a huge difference in the grand scheme of things.

Agree with everyone here.
I would carry on bf until DC is ready and then let my body settle, then start MJ

I stopped BF at 10 months in order to start MJ. I had a two week gap between stopping BF and first jab.
To be fair, I was combi feeding for two months already and had planned to stop BF soon for other reasons so the fact I wanted to try MJ just sort of reinforced the idea of stopping sooner.
If she didn't take bottles or we weren't already in the process of stopping, I think I'd have just waited a bit longer. Although my weight was soaring the last few months so I'm glad I started when I did to limit any further damage!

Thank you all so much for your replies.

@afinethingindeed yes that's exactly where I'm at now... Already ready to stop breastfeeding but starting MJ gives me some incentive to do it more intentionally rather than dragging it out. I'm going to do more combi feeding for a few weeks and study cutting down on bf.

@BrokenWing if you don't mind me asking, how long do you think we're talking? I'm staggered by how quickly my BMI has shot up... Being in the early 40s range is not something I saw coming.

How long did it take u to loss weight, after stopping breastfeeding? It’s beed 1 week I stoped breastfeeding my toddler. I want to start MJ!

afinethingindeed · 17/11/2024 10:14

@Michele2024 I waited a couple of weeks before starting in the injection (I wanted to be sure we were finished BF). Once I started the injections, weight loss was pretty immediate. I've now lost 2stone in 12 weeks.
Good luck!

I weaned to start MJ but like pp my DC was a toddler.

In terms of how long it will take, how much do you need to lose? You can generally work on a basis of -2lb per week although in reality it won’t be quite as neat as that. It’s taken me a year to lose just under 8 stone.
