Worried about hair loss

I am thinking of starting either mounjaro or wegovy, but I am really worried about hair loss as a side effect - my hair is already pretty fine/thin and something that I am quite self conscious about.

Have people experienced hair loss as a side effect?

The hair loss isn't a side effect from taking the medication.
It is from too fast weight loss.
If you try and get your calories in and don't lose weight mega fast you should be OK.
I have heard some people take the biotin supplement which can help.

I'm on wegovy - I've suffered with hair loss for years but not noticed any increase at all.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 27/08/2024 11:39

Yes I definitely noticed it at first (and didn't lose weight fast at all) but it's stopped now.

I did ozempic for a year and experienced pretty dramatic hair loss. I'm using minoxidil and it's coming back now. As much as it's hit my confidence, I've lost nearly 4 stone and feel amazing so it has been worth it.

InandOutlander · 27/08/2024 19:05

I'm 10 months in and still have very bad hair loss, despite not having a fast weight loss. So for me it has absolutely been a side effect, yes.

Athena51 · 27/08/2024 19:22

I've been on Ozempic then Wegovy for 2 years and lost nearly 8 and a half stone. I do have very thick hair but it's as thick and healthy as ever, no hair loss at all so it's not inevitable.

Thank you everyone. I am only just at the BMI level where I will be allowed it (28ish with a condition where they will prescribe), so I’m not sure I want to risk messing my hair up - I really don’t have that much to start with! It’s such a difficult decision.

I've been on wegovy since mid-May and just these past few days have been shedding loads. I know it can arise (temporarily) from weight loss and I suspect the lack of appetite means I am not eating a very balanced diet, so am going to add in a womens multivitamin and see if that helps. At the moment it isn't severe enough for me to stop the treatment but I have very fine hair and lots of it. I am going to keep an eye on it. My losses are slowing to the point that I could probably achieve the same on calorie counting alone but I like not having the constant thoughts about food.

I'm not on any weight loss medication but have noticed quite a lot of hair loss recently (having lost approx 22kg now in 27 weeks). I'm eating around 1300 - 1400 calories a day and not on a restricted diet (e.g. not low carbon or anything like that and balanced). So I think it's probably a side effect of losing weight in general rather than weight loss medication in particular. Same as you, very fine hair anyway so it's not great (but coming from a much higher BMI than yours still worth it for me).

TheChosenTwo · 08/07/2025 23:32

Yes I’ve lost loads, it’s been my most
severe side effect. The other one has been coldness.
I haven’t suffered from nausea or any sickness, sulphur burps or extreme fatigue. I have had spells of dizziness but they come and go.
I’ve lost a huge amount of hair but thankfully had a lot to lose in the first place, I don’t have thin patches but there’s definitely a lot less volume now.
However I’m 5 stone down and counting and I’d take the hairloss over the additional strain on my heart any day. The hair will grow back one day.

MrsMiagi · 11/07/2025 08:06

It has been horrendous for me, definitely due to MJ. I have been losing average 1.9 pounds a week so not fast loss.
No idea if my hair will ever go back to normal

TheCalmCat · 05/09/2025 11:39

Those on Mounjaro- has anyone had their hair grow back? I’m experiencing a lot hair loss / shedding and it’s affecting my confidence

TheChosenTwo · 05/09/2025 12:11

I haven’t noticed if mine is growing back or not to be honest and it’s still shedding a lot.
