Question for those who have had extreme appetite suppression

I'm on day 4 now and my appetite is still very suppressed (I would say completely). I also now have slow gastric emptying as well, so my stomach feels very, very full on very little. I only managed 600 calories yesterday and that was a huge struggle.

So as not to drip feed, my protein intake is important for me as I very much need not to lose muscle mass, whilst at the same time lose weight. I have osteo-arthritis and another bone degenerative condition and maintaining muscle is important. Hence being a little bit stressed about not being able to eat hardly at all.

Did any of you who also had severe appetite repression delay your next injection to let some of the repression wear off? Or am I over-worrying and the effects are likely to have diminished by day 7 anyway?

I posted a similar question last week.
I did my first injection on a Friday and totally lost my appetite, struggled to eat anything. I delayed my next injection to the Monday but it really didn’t change anything, I still have zero appetite.
I am now drinking protein shakes as I can’t think of any other way to achieve my protein intake.
i really can’t see me being able to go up a dose next month, so will speak to my prescriber if I can stay on 2.5.
I hope someone comes along more knowledge than me to help you.

Thank you @Happyearlyretirement . I cannot believe how extreme the suppression has been or how revolted I am by food. On the one hand it is good but on the other hand it is a bit scary.

I went out an bought a bottle of Huel last night (I can't tolerate too much lactose, so whey is out) and I'm sipping that this morning. Hoping I can get at least 400 calories in via that and at least some of my of protein.

Are you managing to eat anything?

Protein shakes and protein water (myprotein & vieve are nice). Keep your protein to at least 1gram per kilogram and your multivitamins and minerals up or you will loose muscle and also stall your weight loss. Don't worry too much about calories. Nibble. Try and eat nuts, biltong, oily fish, olive oil....

I had very heavy suppression for the first couple of weeks then my body seemed tolerant and it has appeared to have gone... I say appeared because I am not trying to eat too much as i obviously intend to lose weight...
for the slow bowel emptying I did all sort of stuff (prunes laxatives etc) but have settled down to ensuring that I have a good bowl of All Bran every day and that works for me.
9 weeks in 34lb down.

MargoLivebetter · 22/08/2024 10:07

Thank you @dcbgr . I read some good reviews about myprotein, so might try that. The thought of an oily fish right now makes me feel ill. I usually love it. Nuts are a good idea. I don't actually want to retch thinking about them.

@Happycyclist that is good to know that it didn't last forever. Hopefully, it will ease a bit.

YY to protein shakes, albeit that they are UPF if you can't stomach any food then it is a good way to get some nutrition in.

I found ryvita a good way to help move things along and they are easy to nibble through the day.

MargoLivebetter · 22/08/2024 12:29

Thank you @SevernWonders I feel like I could nibble some ryvita.

My problem isn't constipation though it is the slow emptying of my stomach (rather than bowels). I feel like I've eaten the full Christmas Day dinner when I've just had a tiny amount and then the feeling lasts for hours and hours. Yesterday, it lasted from 1pm to when I went to bed. I've managed to get a bottle of Huel down by sipping it since 9am this morning and I am stuffed and feel unpleasantly full again. Can't see myself being able to eat any lunch.

I've found that the full feeling for me is more about excess acid. I chew a Tums and it usually goes away. Also good are Rennies Deflatine, or Esomeprazole.

MargoLivebetter · 22/08/2024 13:02

@Swissrollover interesting. I'll buy a pack of rennies and see if that helps. Thank you.

No idea what you are all taking but would a protein yoghurt help you? DD had a protein blueberry one last week Flowers

MargoLivebetter · 23/08/2024 09:32

@Swissrollover a rennie helped!!! Thank you 💐. The unbearable full feeling has definitely subsided and I managed a small but reasonable meal last night.

I still have zero appetite but at least I don't feel uncomfortable.

Hooray! It is one of the early symptoms that I have recognised when I've gone on to develop a stomach ulcer.
