Thinking of starting Mounjaro - side effects

alwaysscared · 30/07/2024 14:36

I have had a quick look through the threads and couldn't find one specific about side effects.
I am terribly emetophobic and absolutely petrified of the side effects. Can people please let me know their side effects and what I can honestly expect if I start taking it.
I am currently 18.3 stone and 5'7. Had a hysterectomy 8 weeks ago and piled on a stone in that time. I am desperate to lose weight, type 2 diabetic with high cholesterol. Unfortunately they can't prescribe Mounjaro on the NHS at the moment, so will need to buy it.
TIA

I’m a type 2 diabetic and get it on the NHS. My main side effect is nausea when I eat something I shouldn’t, whether that’s too many carbs or sugar I shouldn’t be having. Im on week 3 of 2.5mg. I haven’t been sick at any point but if nausea is an issue for you then you might not get on with it.

Cerialkiller · 30/07/2024 14:41

I have had very minimal side effects in 13 weeks. Some wind, soft stools, constipation. And that is with me not bothering to avoid the risky foods, spicy, fatty for example. Probably my strongest side effects were after the very first jab.

I have taken deliberate action to avoid side effects however by doing an intermediate dose between dosing up. So a 3.75g dose between 2.5g and 5g for example.

If you were especially concerned there is nothing stopping you doing similar and even halfing the initial starting dose to see how you fair?

To give you an indication. In studies, only about 1in 20 people stopped treatment because of side effects.

SilenceInside · 30/07/2024 14:42

I have not had any gastric side effects at all, so far. I'm on week 4, so I have done 4 doses of 2.5mg which is the lowest dose. I am eating less, no interest in fatty or sugary foods or carbs, with a preference for protein and veggies. I have seen people say that if they eat high fat/sugar/carb foods then that can cause issues.

Thank you guys, I'll give my doc a call and see if they are prescribing yet.
I think I just need to go for it as I'm very unhealthy, but it's scary!

Minimal side effects. You will feel bad if you over eat or drink.

alwaysscared · 30/07/2024 15:47

See, the problem is I drink so much. Probably 6 litres of sparkling water a day. I've tried to drink less but I can't. I think the eating and drinking is a boredom thing as I am a stay at home carer for my 11 year old son with ASD who doesn't leave the house.

Water is fine, drinking too much alcohol will make you feel ill.

No side effects for me yet although wegovy made my hair shred a lot.

alwaysscared · 30/07/2024 15:55

I don't drink alcohol anyway. All I have is sparkling water!! 😂
I'm going to try and speak to the doctor this week. The last time I spoke to her (a few weeks ago), she wasnt able to prescribe

One of the videos I've watched regarding how to inject says "avoid injecting into the muscle". How does that work? Surely there's muscle in the thighs area. Am I misunderstanding?

Gingernaut · 30/07/2024 16:07

Nausea
Taste and smell unpleasantly altered
Diarrhoea

olympicsrock · 30/07/2024 16:15

feeling cold - especially hands
fatigue
reflux and nausea - you will struggle drinking so much sparking the after as MJ slows stomach emptying
feel very full easily and sick if you eat a large meal
constipation

All very manageable . I’ve lost 2 stone in 3.5 months . Starting weight 15:10

You have a thick layer of fat usually if taking these drugs . The needle is very short too

SilenceInside · 30/07/2024 16:17

@fedupwithbeingcold the needle is short - you have to inject into an area that has fat under the skin, deep enough to accommodate the needle. The stomach area is often the easiest place for self injecting. If you're doing thigh, then you need to avoid the areas with less fat! I wouldn't try injecting into my thigh for that reason.

FactyFrances · 30/07/2024 21:04

For subcutaneous injections, you don't have to be particularly fat. Just pinch a bit of skin around your tummy. Loads of people do it daily when on blood thinners.

OP the side effects have been minor to nonexistent for me and my friend, who did suffer from severe side effects on ozempic. Maybe I'm more tired than normal but that could be down to other factors, hot weather, etc.

Felt very low-level nausea occasionally in first week but nothing severe and eating a few bites of fruit or bread fixed it. Perhaps it was just a result of forgetting to eat (something that always seemed like a myth previously). Overall I am very happy with the result, could stay on mounjaro forever!

It seems to affect people differently but I think it’s worth a try and finding out!
I haven’t heard of hardly anyone being actually sick. I think feeling nauseous at times and gastro issues of the other sort (diarrhoea or constipation) is more common, and some people don’t get any of that:

I have had some issues with the above but it’s been very short lived like half a day and the way the medicine works I seem to be most at risk of side affects day 2 after injecting and by day 4/5 feel totally normal.

i was worried about effects and whether it would work for me but thought if i dont try it ill never know. And so far it is working for me slowly but surely and it’s so good to feel more in control of my eating.

SevernWonders · 30/07/2024 21:58

No D&V for me so far (week 10 - I think), the only things I have experienced are a bit of heartburn if I overeat, a bit constipated and feeling cold - tonight everyone else is sweating and I am just comfy!

Similar height and start weight to you, now down to 15 stone 8 since 30 May.

Good luck.

alwaysscared · 30/07/2024 23:09

@SevernWonders wow, I can only dream of being that weight!
What worries me as well is that I have a binge eating disorder so I will eat whether hungry or not, so I'm worried it won't work

OP posts:
NewLifter · 31/07/2024 06:59

Please don't waste time worrying about it not working - you won't know unless you try!

However you do need to get to the bottom of your binging if you want to maintain your weightloss, unless you plan to stay on it forever.

I understand the worry, I think we all were, however for me I was more worried about the impact of my weight gain on my health

Have a good read through the long threads on here, they're so helpful

I'm a binge eater (well was but not on this), I would secretly eat my way through multi packs of crisps, stop off at the petrol station (despite having an electric car that doesn't need petrol) pick up a couple of large sharing bags of minstrels and scoff the lot on the way home so nobody knew about it. The amount of advent calendars / easter eggs that I have had to replace multiple times over the years because I ate them before it was time to give them to the kids is crazy.

With this jab, the siren call of the junk food is silenced - my body is craving protein and fibre so that is what I feel the desire to eat when I am hungry.
