Continuing Mounjaro...part 9

Please note: Mounjaro can only be taken if your BMI is above 30.

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system. Also below you can plot the effect of your doses.
glp1plotter.com/

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after than a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be be other side effects also. Read info here :

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB

Also there is a 5th dose in each pen. To extract it you can either try a hard twist or use an insulin needle.
medbasic.co.uk/bd-micro-fine-30g-1ml-syringes-needles

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day.

11 - Some natural sources of protein:
www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein
www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

12 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), electrolytes.

13 - Drink lota of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

14 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

15 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
furthet reading about injection sites and the effects: www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

16 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

17 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

18 - Some of the places you can order from are:

MedExpress 2.5mg and 5mg. £149.99. 7.5mg £169. Use code STARTNOW. Ask for other codes if that doesn't work.
The Family Chemist 2.5mg and 5mg -£149. 7.5mg £169.
Simple online pharmacy - £159 2.5mg £179 5mg
Bolt pharmacy 2.5mg £125, 5mg £179. 7.5mg £189
Asda 2.5mg and 5mg £184. 7.5mg £189
Boots £219 +
Chemist4U £179 +
Superdrugs

19 - If you want to switch suppliers, make sure you have pics of your Mounjaro box with your name and dose. This will come in useful when other suppliers ask for evidence.

I also forgot to say about protein drink.

Cup oat/soya milk
1 banana
Frozen cherries
2 tbs hemp powder
1 tbs maca powder
1 heaped teaspoon cocoa powder
A few of ice cubes

I make it so its quite thick and It tastes like chocolate cherry ice cream - delish! I think it's about 30mgs protein

Wasitalwaysgoingtobelikethis · 17/05/2024 21:31

Why is my appetite still the same? I'm on my second 5mg this week.

GreyFinch · 17/05/2024 21:36

Oakcupboard · 17/05/2024 15:46

Hey all, just thought I’d update you - 14lb down today 😁 Wednesday was my first dose of the 5mg pen. Although I used my bonus dose last week to ‘upgrade’ to 5mg a week early.

i notice a massive difference in the 5mg dose, in terms of reduction of appetite and food noise. This is truly life changing for me, I actually know I’ll make it this time. Although I have a long way to go 🙈 I’m 19stone 2lb today.

im vegetarian and struggling with protein, I always do. Anybody got any suggestions for protein idea ?

Wow well done! I see a lot of people starting lower at 13/14st which is a dream to me but I started almost hitting the 20st mark and now down 13.8lbs. I’m due my first 5mg dose Wednesday, although like you I had my bonus dose to take me to 5mg Wednesday just gone. Good luck on your weight loss and hope it continues as you are!! Xo

Ghilliedu · 17/05/2024 22:12

Finally heard back from a pharmacist at med ex who sent the following not very helpful response about expiry dates -

“Regarding Mounjaro 5mg, we update our stock regularly and will only send out pens that allow you to use up the pen before the expiry date.”

I’ll just order it and hope for the best!

They also asked me lots of questions about why I wanted to stay on 5mg and said that the vomiting and diarrhoea is a common side affect so I should speak to my GP if I need help dealing with it. Has anyone tried anti sickness tablets and did they work?

Voy are now only giving £85 off with the referrals, I think. At least, my account is. I've cancelled anyway, but can still refer and it shows as £85. Which makes it £144, so far from the cheapest any more if you're getting 2.5mg.

Rainbowl · 17/05/2024 23:21

Evening ladies (I don’t think we have any men in our ranks although I could be mistaken?)

Long time no post but have caught up on the thread. Big welcome to all newbies and well done for everyone’s losses. Big shout out to @FlappyFish you look fabulous in that photo! To those who are struggling - keep going and keep talking.

I’ve lost 1.5lb this week which I’m pleased with. It brings me to a total loss of 18lbs in seven weeks.

Here are my graphs, the first one showing the peaks and troughs of a daily weigher 😂 and the second one showing the fuller picture and projections. The dotted green line is based on my target to get to 10 stone by the end of the year. The red line is how I’m tracking at the moment. It also has some visually pleasing colour zones for BMI groupings eg 35-40, 30-35 etc.

@KW1987

Yes, I really wouldn't worry about it, the odds are very unlikely that it was thyroid, then even unlikelier it was the specific very rare type and there's been no evidence in humans anyway. As a PP said, the studies that led to an abundance of caution on this were on rats who have GLP-1 receptors on their thyroids, humans don't, I've read the same study. I certainly set my mind at ease on this subject by looking into it.

It would seem the health risks from being obese are far higher than a hypothetical possibilty!

lurkylurk · 18/05/2024 00:22

@Moanranger

Re. visceral fat, that does seem to be the case, at least for me which is a very good thing.

@Oakcupboard

Re. vegetarian protein, wheat is actually quite high in protein, not complete but combine with some of the pulses and it is. Chickpeas and black beans are definitely good ones, as are edamame beans, firm tofu, seitan (as mentioned), tempeh, chia seeds, and guava is weirdly high in protein for a fruit (only 4.5g per 100 but still!)

lurkylurk · 18/05/2024 00:23

@Oakcupboard

And cottage cheese!

ObsidianTree · 18/05/2024 07:05

Well done for your progress @Rainbowl

@Dcd80 MedExpress I believe CONSULT-BLOOM might work. If you are a new customer try MED20P or STARTNOW

With going on holiday on Tuesday, was thinking, I might not be around if a new thread is needed. So if anyone would like to continue the next thread that would be great.

Just link the new thread to this one etc.

Someone that's been here since thread 1 maybe?

Thanks 😊

I've just sat to insert my first dosage and hadn't realised that the pen needles were not included 🤦🏻‍♀️

Where would I purchase these from?

Cerialkiller · 18/05/2024 08:43

They really should have been included. Usually in a seperate box in the same big delivered box. Inform the company and they should send them out.

Cerialkiller · 18/05/2024 08:45

After about 10days with no weight loss, I've now lost 2lb over two days. Weird. I'm now 13.5lb down. Sooo close to a stone and I started at 14st exactly so only 0.9lb from being 12st something.

NCfor24 · 18/05/2024 08:57

@Cerialkiller I started at 14st too. Seeing 12st.. something still feels weird!
Well done on the whoosh!

thehousewiththesagegreensofa · 18/05/2024 09:09

I am almost at the stage of being impressed at how loathe my body is to lose weight. This week, I have averaged 1200 calories most days, run 4x (only 20 mins each time), done a cardio class, a weights session and 3 Pilates classes and my weight has stayed the same. I was hopeful this morning having finally pooed for what I realised was the first time in days but it has made no difference whatsoever. Official weigh in not until Monday so hopefully some of these fat cells will have got the message and disappeared by then. All I can think is that my body must be a really attractive place for them to want to cling to!
It does make me slightly concerned about maintenance. I am effectively maintaining at the moment but I can't stay on MJ forever and nor can I be this focussed forever.

Secretslimmer · 18/05/2024 09:20

My Voy is still on a 50% discount - my husband just started it after I was 6 weeks in and we both got 50% off. I know after that it’s more expensive than some others (unless more referrals are made) but I liked the fact they leave it up to you to tell the GP and so far service has been good. I’ve lost 12 lbs in 6 weeks - though I’ve been on holiday for a week so braced for the scales when I get home. Think I’ve not been too bad on diet front, but the booze is another matter! Anyway my code if anyone is wanting one. https://joinvoy.com/r/U-aWOMzJ57O6

Wonkypictureframe · 18/05/2024 09:46

@thehousewiththesagegreensofa I feel your pain! But just wondering whether losing some of the running and adding more weights in might help. All running does is burn calories but weights help to improve your metabolism (and are cardio in themselves as you get out of breath). Not that this is a magic bullet when you’re doing all you’re doing but somehow eat less, move more is not just working!

MrsBurtMacklin · 18/05/2024 09:57

Did my 4th 5mg yesterday, and today I actually feel fine! The past 3 weeks have been a total write off for the first half of the week with feeling sick and not being able to eat anything at all. And now I feel absolutely fine! Very full after a small breakfast, but no nausea. Woohoo!

Now I just need the scales to shift downwards again. Still plateauing. (Week before AF)

Wonkypictureframe · 18/05/2024 09:59

I’m about to take my first 7.5mg. I think it’s definitely time to move up. Yesterday I had half a cheese and bacon toastie in a cafe, some chocolate cake, a Chinese takeaway and some wine. All in small portions but obviously NOT a nutritious or sensible day for me! It was a birthday in our family so a bit exceptional.

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 18/05/2024 10:04

Hi everyone. I usually post on the 5st+ Mounjaro thread but I’ve come over this morning for advice from anyone who has been through a few dosage increases.

I had a great first month on 2.5mg and lost 16lb in total. Appetite suppression was mild and side effects were minimal and I was able to focus on 100g protein a day. I did my first 5mg jab on Tuesday night and it has absolutely kicked my arse this week. The nausea on Wednesday was like the very worst of my first trimester pregnancy sickness and although this faded I was left with total appetite suppression. I had to force myself to eat anything at all - eg a whole morning trying to have a protein yoghurt pouch - and I haven’t eaten anywhere near enough. I’ve lost 9lb since last Saturday, which sounds great but is surely very unhealthy and unsustainable.

It doesn’t help that I’ve been under a lot of emotional stress since DH told me this week that he feels the romantic side of our marriage is completely dead. Undoubtedly the Mounjaro and the emotion have combined but the marriage problems aren’t going anywhere any time soon. I am seriously considering counting clicks on my 5mg pen to go back down to 2.5mg next week. Is this a terrible idea? Should I try and ride it out? Will it settle down?

Thank you so much.

MrsBurtMacklin · 18/05/2024 10:26

@VelociraptorsVelociRapping Sorry you're going through so much right now.
I have more than 5st to lose too - I've just posted above. 5mg kicked my ass the first and second week. Third week it got a bit better, and this is my fourth week and I don't feel nausea at all. Going from other anecdotal evidence on these threads, side effects do gradually fade.
