Continuing Mounjaro...part 8

ObsidianTree · 05/05/2024 14:42

Please note: Mounjaro can only be taken if your BMI is above 30.

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system. Also below you can plot the effect of your doses.
https://glp1plotter.com/

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after than a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be be other side effects also. Read info here :

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. https://www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB

Also there is a 5th dose in each pen. To extract it you can either try a hard twist or use an insulin needle.
https://medbasic.co.uk/bd-micro-fine-30g-1ml-syringes-needles

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day.

11 - Some natural sources of protein:
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

12 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), electrolytes.

13 - Drink lota of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

14 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

15 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
furthet reading about injection sites and the effects: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

16 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

17 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

18 - Some of the places you can order from are:

  • MedExpress 2.5mg and 5mg. £149.99. 7.5mg £169. Use code STARTNOW. Ask for other codes if that doesn't work.
  • The Family Chemist 2.5mg and 5mg -£149. 7.5mg £169.
  • Simple online pharmacy - £159 2.5mg £179 5mg
  • Bolt pharmacy 2.5mg £125, 5mg £179. 7.5mg £189
  • Asda 2.5mg and 5mg £184. 7.5mg £189
  • Boots £219 +
  • Chemist4U £179 +
  • Superdrugs

19 - If you want to switch suppliers, make sure you have pics of your Mounjaro box with your name and dose. This will come in useful when other suppliers ask for evidence.

@BlackFriYay that's why I pay little attention to clothes sizes! They are all over the place even in the same shops. If it fits, it's my size.

Purpledefector · 12/05/2024 19:42

Week 7... med express have sent my 7.5 so I decided to up myself to 7.5 with my 5 pen using clicks. ( patience is not a virtue I possess).
I did 3 weeks on 2.5 then 3 weeks on 5. Have done great - steady weight loss, no great side effects - but omg the 7.5 has floored me! Indigestion, zero appetite, nausea.
Please help me with all your tips!

How backwards is primark sizing?!

I bought some paper bag style light denim jeans last week, I got away with a size 10 thanks to the elasticated waistband (I'm definitely not a regular size 10 - I'm somewhere between a 12 and a 14 now, having gone down from being between a 14 and a 16. As I still have weight to lose I opted for the smaller size)

However, I have another pair of jeans here that I bought a month or so before I started MJ. They're from 'the primark edit' range which a bit better quality than the usual stuff. These ones are a size 18. I couldn't get my arse into a 16 or 14 in these jeans.

Both pairs fit. Make it make sense 🤦🏼‍♀️

You sure you're reading the label right? Could they be an 8????????

They're definitely labelled as an 18 😁

Except they're* nothing like any 18 I've ever seen. I have a friend (waves) who is a size 18 and she said there's no way they would fit her, they look about three sizes smaller than her 18's.

They actually look the same size as a pair of 12's I have.

Primark are the worst for it. Their sizing has no consistency at all 😬

I got a pair of shorts for my holiday from Primark assuming they would fit. I haven't tried them on yet. Feel like I should do this incase thy don't fit!

With all the stories of suffering going up a dose I think i'm going to do an intermediate dose going up to 5.0in a week or so. I have my last official 2.5 on wednesday then i think i'm going to use up the extra dose doing a 3.75 with the new pen. Will need to do some click maths between the two different pens as each click on the 5.0 pen is double the dose of click on the 2.5.

hmm, has anyone gone up to 3.75 on their 4th 2.5 dose? Am i likely to get a full half dose from the leftover?

Do i really need to change needles if i jab again immediately? even if i swab the area?

KeepingUndercover · 12/05/2024 20:05

@Cerialkiller please change the needle. Even if you think the infection risk is low, I once did it twice without thinking about infection and the needle blunts after the first time. The second one hurt like buggery and gave me a massive bruise. I bought a pack of extra needles for the pen for £8, well worth it.

guestusername · 12/05/2024 20:06

I’ve bought two pairs of jeans in primark before the same size and there was massive difference between the two. I won’t buy them from there anymore

AgathaMystery · 12/05/2024 20:07

Yes. Change the needle. No need to swab, it just disturbs the flora of your skin.

NSV for this afternoon - put on some old work scrubs for gardening and the drown me. I’ve been an XL in NHS scrubs forever.

I'd definitely try them on, hopefully you can exchange them if the sizing is dodgy!

Yes will do soon.

Next time I'll compare the same size things to get the biggest 🤣

Ok thanks, maybe I will wait for the 5th dose to go up. I need to be patient, don't know why i'm trying to rush especially as I can only do this for the 4 months. I should be prolonging this as much as possible.

I have spare needles so i wont reuse. Can anyone provide a link to needles that will work?

Mortigua · 12/05/2024 20:51

I’ve struggled on 7.5 . Went up on Friday . I’m hoping it feels better next week but feeling so sore (back , stomach pains ) and just rough 😩
i am worried that I’ve not developed better habits because I am eating a bit like I did when I had morning sickness , only able to cope with very bland stuff . Hopefully things will ease

Ah WWYD if you were me. My last 2.5 mg dose is this week so first 5 mg should be 23 May. Was fine with that as will be off work for a long weekend but now got a few things planned as it’s my birthday so wondering whether to take a couple of 2.5 ml out of the 5 mg pen and then moving to 5 mg after that? If I do this how many clicks will I need on the 5 mg pen for a half dose?

this would also resolve my worry on what to do for my holiday as I’ll be mid pen.

Or should I pull up my large pants and get on with it?

I need to go back to my protein shakes I think. Good idea about the intermittent fasting. I found I was really hungry when I was on the bonus dose at the end of the 5ml pen , found it hard to control so it’s made me worry I’d regain immediately. Not sure what the answer is and I’ve a way to go still but I can’t afford to be on it forever and I don’t want to be really either

MrsBurtMacklin · 12/05/2024 21:41

Hey, sorry for those suffering with bad side effects when going up doses. I took my 3rd 5mg on Fri morning, and I was dreading horrible side effects, as last week I had awful stomach aches, bloating and running to the loo constantly. This weekend I've felt sick, but that's it. And it wasn't as bad as last weekend. So things are improving!

I also picked up some IBS bloating and wind peppermint oil tablets from boots to try and avoid the worst side effects - maybe they've worked?

Today has been my unhealthiest (food wise) day since I started MJ. I was out for a birthday meal and could not avoid the meal with fried food and cake - hopefully I don't pay too dearly for it!

susiedaisy1912 · 12/05/2024 21:46

I would say no the same needle is fine. No different to when a needle is used to give local anaesthetic subcutaneously in and around an area that needs it.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 12/05/2024 21:47

@MrsBurtMacklin funny you should mention the Buscopan mint oil tablets. I picked some up on the hunt for various remedies. They are great if you get the sulphur indigestion- really makes things a lot more bearable.

JemimaTiggywinkles · 12/05/2024 21:50

I normally lurk, but wanted to say I used half of the bonus dose to top up my last 2.5 to 3.75 to try to reduce the risk of side effects. It was only yesterday morning but so far I feel fine.

I don’t think this is right as they are designed to just be injected once?

Mmm but you’re talking about a trained professional using aseptic non touch technique or a clean technique Vs someone in their bathroom…? And these pen needles are very fine and very crappy. They’re not designed to be used more than once. It’s like reusing a daltaparin needle. You just wouldn’t would you?

Thanks @GloriaBunniford I will ring in a few weeks and ask. I'm only on week 3. I'm in NI so I hope it is the same as I'm guessing you are possibly NHS England
