Continuing Mounjaro...part 8

ObsidianTree · 05/05/2024 14:42

Please note: Mounjaro can only be taken if your BMI is above 30.

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system. Also below you can plot the effect of your doses.
https://glp1plotter.com/

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after than a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be be other side effects also. Read info here :

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. https://www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB

Also there is a 5th dose in each pen. To extract it you can either try a hard twist or use an insulin needle.
https://medbasic.co.uk/bd-micro-fine-30g-1ml-syringes-needles

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day.

11 - Some natural sources of protein:
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

12 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), electrolytes.

13 - Drink lota of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

14 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

15 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
furthet reading about injection sites and the effects: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

16 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

17 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

18 - Some of the places you can order from are:

  • MedExpress 2.5mg and 5mg. £149.99. 7.5mg £169. Use code STARTNOW. Ask for other codes if that doesn't work.
  • The Family Chemist 2.5mg and 5mg -£149. 7.5mg £169.
  • Simple online pharmacy - £159 2.5mg £179 5mg
  • Bolt pharmacy 2.5mg £125, 5mg £179. 7.5mg £189
  • Asda 2.5mg and 5mg £184. 7.5mg £189
  • Boots £219 +
  • Chemist4U £179 +
  • Superdrugs

19 - If you want to switch suppliers, make sure you have pics of your Mounjaro box with your name and dose. This will come in useful when other suppliers ask for evidence.

@MelissaLouRocks that's horrific! Makes me glad I've reported this incident which was more of a "near miss" than anything.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 09/05/2024 15:26

@ObsidianTree I'd be happy just to get to the 3st mark which is a few pounds short of my mini goal, but it's not looking like I'll get to that point either 😄

I do feel a bit rough today and I was sick this morning (had my vitamins on an empty stomach - not recommended, all I can taste is fish and they weren't fishy vitamins and I haven't eaten any fish 🤔).

Like you, I don't want to lose too quickly, but I have so much to lose that I'd love to reach that mini goal haha.

lurkylurk · 09/05/2024 15:27

@MelissaLouRocks

How awful! I do think they should have pressed charges. I understand mistakes happen but when you're talking about a bottle of morphine, there is no margin of error!

Maybe they could do with a system whereby two people check it after the prescribing doctor, once visually and the other by a barcode on the prescription that has to match a barcode on the medicine being handed over or dispatched.

MelissaLouRocks · 09/05/2024 15:30

ObsidianTree · 09/05/2024 15:17

Bloody hell! That is terrible and deserving of reporting to all and sundry!

I'm sorry it effected you so badly. That is a horrible thing to happen. Wasn't anything done about the mistake in the boots branch? Surely if the police were involved something must have got back to the pharmacy? Some reviews etc?

She was sacked and her licence removed, but that was little consolation to his widow. She actually took her to small claims court for the funeral costs and won.

That particular person had cocked up before, though to a lesser extent. After that I insisted that when my controlled drugs were collected, they had to see ID and only two named people were allowed. That's how I knew damn well it wasn't issued to me. They just wouldn't listen, but if they had perhaps it wouldn't have been too late.

They now treat me like royalty in there, anything I ask is no trouble, and no more errors. But that's how it should always be.

She should have sued Boots, they have insurance for these kind of things.

NextPrimeMinister · 09/05/2024 15:41

@Wonkypictureframe

I'm not CC, as it's too much like all my previous failed diet attempts.

I'm focusing on 3 x meals a day, portion control and no snacks.

No food is off the menu, but sticking to the above will help me eat 'normally' for life after MJ. (Hopefully).

guestusername · 09/05/2024 15:50

@Madferitchick i inject on the evening so I can sleep off any immediate side effects. My first dose I did at lunchtime and by the time bedtime came around my legs were so sore that I couldn’t sleep or bear anything touching them

DownWithThisKindOfThing · 09/05/2024 15:55

Oh my! Third dose due this evening and I am
prowling the kitchen! Succumbed to a chocolate hobnob!

April88 · 09/05/2024 16:08

I don’t count calories properly, but keep a rough idea in my head.

Super happy as although not official weigh day (I weigh daily anyway) I’ve lost enough to officially be in the overweight category wahoo!

2 stone 1lb to be a healthy weight, I’m aiming for 2 stone 3 which will mean a total of 6 stone since my heaviest in November!

I haven’t been in a healthy weight most of my adult life so realistically I’m not going to aim for too far into the ‘healthy’ category.

Cerialkiller · 09/05/2024 09:20

Medexpress have asked for another round of photos before I can change over to them, i was worried because i have lost 11lb in two weeks and thought it might tip me over into not looking fat enough. So if anyone wants tips on taking super unflattering photos of yourself!!!

Take photo from a low angle
Wear light or shiny, tight clothing.
hair up (to show off your jowls)
relax your gut
don't stand up straight
look down at the camera slightly to accentuate the double chin
don't pull up your leggings so they can't hide your love handles
harsh artificial lighting from in front of you
look a bit miserable

Haha, if it wasn't outing i would show you the before/after photos it was weird trying to NOT do all the things I usually do to make myself look better. I have been holding my gut in for years!! very hard not to do.

I sent a picture of myself in shorts and a bra.. posed in exactly the way you describe and made sure my C-section overhang (which is usually well hidden) was spilling over the top of said shorts, I looked like the mitchellin man 😂

Cerialkiller · 09/05/2024 16:48

@BlackFriYay

Haha, yes I look AWFUL, almost disappointed that i didn't get an instant approval from medexpress after all that work. At least i have a really convincing 'before' photo now to compared to my hot 'after' image in a few months.

Moanranger · 09/05/2024 17:01

If not tracking calories works for you, that is, if you are losing steadily, that’s great! If not, it can be helpful. I find that once Nutracheck is set up - favourites added, recipes input, it’s super-fast& easy to use. But each to his own.

Baldatbirth · 09/05/2024 17:10

A little update. Had my second injection of 5 today. I don't want to eat anything and I am weirdly struggling with that. My husband is away this evening and I am really tempted to forgo food this evening but I know it's not healthy.

Congratulations on everyone's loses.

That's a great effect tho! Before MJ, if my husband was away i'd be ordering a sneaky takeaway and stocking up on junk 😂

Pre-MJ me would. It's why I have found it odd. I have no idea what I even fancy anymore. I am struggling with breakfasts for the same reason. Am taking soup for work. Takes the planning away.

thehousewiththesagegreensofa · 09/05/2024 17:16

I'm trying to work out whether it's a good idea to track food/calories or not. In some ways, I think it's a good idea to get into the habit (and, in my case, planning what I'm eating the night before is more important than tracking on the day/at the end of the day as I am very impulsive and the thought of a particular food item only has to enter my head for me to crave it and then eat it if I can possibly access it and I obviously can't ever stop at just one). On the other hand, if I've been tracking for months, once I stop MJ will I abandon tracking too? Should I instead use tracking as a tool to help me maintain?
Did a couple of you say that you've got events on 5th June? One of the key dates I have coming up is 6th June. I am hoping for a noticeable difference by then (even if only noticeable to me) and to be in the same stone as I was when I met DH, even if it's the other end of that stone bracket! I need to wear a fancy frock in a couple of weeks so am focussing on that too. I refuse to buy a new one but remember my existing ones being a bit of a squeeze last year.

Cerialkiller · 09/05/2024 17:21

I ate basically nothing the first day. I felt like I'd just had a full Christmas dinner and pudding all day, couldn't face anything. Maybe try and eat two small starter sizes. There really no point in forcing yourself to eat normally, the whole point is this helps you eat less!

ObsidianTree · 09/05/2024 17:22

@thehousewiththesagegreensofa it's a tricky one. On the one hand you can see exactly what your eating, what your calories are and make sure You're not eating too much or too little. But I am finding it hard to do it regularly!

I think as I am losing steadily it doesn't matter too much. If I get to a stall and not losing at all, then I'll track to see if I'm eating more than I should.

Yes I am on holiday from 21st may. So waiting to hit a mini goal by then! Not because I will look slimmer... But just because! Lol

Medexpress have accepted my awful photos 😂. I'm officially with them now. Expecting 5mg dose on Monday. Oh, must cancel with juniper before they charge me again.

Has anyone here been to Krakow? Meeting a friend there at the end of the month, and wondering what the food will be like. I'm pescetarian by the way.

I haven't been but Polish food is quite meat heavy but they also have things like pierogi dumplings with cheese filling, and soups with eggs, potato pancakes with mushroom sauce type things, and most places will have vegetarian options and they do have some fish dishes.

KeepingUndercover · 09/05/2024 18:15

Krakow has a lot of options, it's been years since I went but it had a lot of different cuisines on offer.

It's more global then it was 10 years ago and you can get most cuisines there now. If you don't meat then beware that some vegetarian food is garnished with bacon e.g. cheese perogi. I remember having decent salads while I was there.

ObsidianTree · 09/05/2024 18:39

I've heard it's really nice @MelissaLouRocks . Good value and great food. Not sure about fish though. But hopefully you'll find something you like.
