Continuing Mounjaro...part 5

ObsidianTree · 11/04/2024 22:11

Please note: Mounjaro can only be taken if your BMI is above 30.

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system.

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after than a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be be other side effects also. Read info here :
www.medicines.org.uk/emc/files/pil.14201.pdf

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. Ask for suggestions of sites /types to buy.

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day. There are protein supplements you can take. Myprotein have a good range. Ask for a referral code if you want to buy some.

11 - Some natural sources of protein:
www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein
www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

12 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), electrolytes.

13 - Drink lota of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

14 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

15 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
further reading about injection sites and the effects: www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

16 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

17 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

18 - Some of the places you can order from are:

  • MedExpress - £149.99 - Sometimes there are codes that can be used for a discount. Ask for a code on here or do a Google search to try and find one.
  • Voy - £114.99 for first month then £229 after. Need a referral code (ask on here for one if needed)
  • The Family Chemist -£149
  • Simple online pharmacy - £159 2.5mg £179 for 5mg
  • Bolt pharmacy 2.5mg £125, 5mg £179. Or starter pack with 2.5mg and 5mg pen £319
  • Asda £184
  • Boots £219
  • Chemist4U £179
  • Pharmacy2u
  • Superdrug
There other other sellers, we don't have them all listed

19 - If you want to switch suppliers, make sure you have pics of your Mounjaro box with your name and dose. This will come in useful when other suppliers ask for evidence.

@Soukmyfalafel if she says anything, just say you've been getting reflux after big/greasy meals and have been advised by the GP to eat little and often and avoid certain foods.

Wonkypictureframe · 13/04/2024 08:31

My PT says collagen needs to be taken as a liquid to work. I’ve also been despairing at the state of my hands!

MelissaLouRocks · 13/04/2024 08:31

Can I ask how you dodge a big meal with people who don't know? I have a family member coming later who wants a takeaway. Luckily it's chinese (and not pizza) so I can go for something lighter, but I'm worried I won't be shovelling it in my gob as usual. I think I might get sussed out this evening. Nothing gets past this person and she will be horrified I'm using jabs, as in her mind I'm not fat (even though I was on the cusp of being obese). She is bigger than I was, but happy with her weight and this will be 'cheating'.

On Easter Sunday we had a big family meal and I mentioned I was feeling a bit 'weird' beforehand, declined a glass of wine because I felt queasy then ate what I could! The only reaction I got was "that's a shame" and we took food home in tupperware. It probably wouldn't work if we all got together weekly but doubt we'll have a meal now for a couple of months!

DH has booked a lovely restaurant for a belated birthday meal for me tonight. He's the only person who knows I'm doing this so I'm a little 🙄 at the fact that he has but will order wisely and try not to overdo it. Took my extra 2.5 yesterday but was starving last night and really need it to kick in. I have no clue how big a dose I got but every other dose I've been feeling the cold from the inside out (like bones cold and radiating outwards iykwim) by Saturday afternoon so I feel like if that doesn't happen today I'll be using my 5mg pen tomorrow!

Talk a lot and eat very slowly. Order soup. How could she possibly tell that you are using jabs if you don't tell her?

NCfor24 · 13/04/2024 08:42

@ObsidianTree well done on your losses. It's so great to see another stone bracket on the scales!

That's a good idea. Thanks for suggesting it. I'm usually hungrier in the evening luckily.

Yes exactly!
I think I'll always only confess to calorie counting and will share my use of Nutracheck for tracking. Ultimately I feel the jabs are the willpower support really and lots of other people have success with calorie counting, it doesn't make us frauds.
@Soukmyfalafel it's fine to have takeaway and say you're watching what you eat a bit... I just find the feeling ill explanation is helpful when you're eating so much less than usual, as opposed to just choosing a healthy meal but finishing it if that makes sense.

Been wading these threads and I think I'm ready!

Can I ask for a code for MedExpress on here?

Does it have a use by date (the code)
Asking cos depending on a few things going on in personal life I might be able to start as early as next week or potentially in 4 weeks.

If things don't go to plan, I don't want to waste a code shared, if it's gonna run out before I get a chance to use it

Also I've read as the effects wear off closer to the next injection date you get hungrier.

Would anyone suggest a Friday might be good for injection day for me as I'm more likely to binge over the weekend with my kids and family around?

Welcome!

CONSULT-BUNNY is currently working for 15% off. Don't quote me on this, but I believe their codes usually only run for the month they're in, so you should have until the end of April. But undoubtedly there will be others after that.

Regards the day you start, it's difficult to tell because it kicks in for everyone at a different rate.

Whatever you decide, good luck. 💐

MelissaLouRocks · 13/04/2024 09:00

Also meant to add, unless it's a code you've been personally emailed, Med Express codes can usually be used by anyone until it goes out of date, but each customer can only use it the once.

Oh thank you! I understand, fingers crossed I can start sooner rather than later but the fact I'm starting within the next 4 weeks feels amazing.

Will keep reading/bookmarking the threads. They are super helpful so thank you all!

@Soukmyfalafel I have told everyone I'm dieting, by portion control, no snacks or sweets etc. So I'm getting away with smaller portions and stopping etc. It's helped explain the physical changes that are now quite apparent and allows me to eat only 'what I can'. I go on a diet at least once a year so I imagine everyone's thinking 'here we go again'.

@MelissaLouRocks can you recommend any marine collegan? I wouldn't know where to start looking for it.

NCfor24 · 13/04/2024 09:07

@Creamcheesedreams I think a lot of us do the injection on a Friday so that hopefully the worse of any side effects are over a weekend. It generally kicks in well by a Saturday for me and I do my jab Friday lunchtime. Where you dose can have an impact though, tummy is absorbed quickest I think but last 2 doses I've moved to thigh in the hope it lasts the full week by absorbing a little slower.

Hunter and Gather does fantastic marine collagen, all natural foods on this site (no nasties). If you also wanted one with hyaluronic acid, Nutrition Geeks do a great one but that is with bovine collagen (I don't currently know a marine one that has it included). Personally I take both, but I've linked them here for you. If you use the code GYMFLUENCERS on Hunter and Gather you'll get 20% off your whole order.

Thanks all :) it is nice to get into the 14s bracket. I didn't expect it this week so was happily surprised when the lbs kept going down!

Re meals out / with groups etc. I think it's fine to say you are dieting so will only eat a small portion. Then take a small portion, finish what you can and just say you are using lots of willpower! (Even tho you aren't 😜) I have had many social occasions and just say I'm dieting so eating less. No one has really noticed. I'm sure we've known people in our lives that are always watching their weight and eat like birds, just act like what they would do and people can't say anything!

Asda have given me an estimated delivery window of a week (between next Tuesday and the Tuesday after). Does anyone know if they're more specific once it's been dispatched?

ObsidianTree · 13/04/2024 09:29

@MelissaLouRocks I currently have bovine collagen, does marine collagen work better than bovine? If so how? Sorry if you have answered this! The thread moves so quick!

I have started to notice my neck looks a bit wrinkly, not sure if it's because I have lost weight on my neck, but what to try and reduce this! So would be good to know if marine collagen might help with this? Thanks :)

NNSingers · 13/04/2024 09:36

Thank you so much @MelissaLouRocks I have just ordered the Marine collagen and hyaluronic acid 'glow up' powder! It looks and sounds great!

BlackFriYay · 13/04/2024 09:37

I've ordered this. It's a liquid version, 10000mg marine collagen and has hyaluronic acid with it. It's £20 for 20 doses and from my (admittedly limited) research seems to be a good one.

They have a bundle of three types you can buy together if you want to experiment with different ways of taking it (capsules, tablets)

There's an option to spread the cost with Klarna and Clearpay which is always a bonus for me.
