Continuing Mounjaro...part 5

1000 replies

ObsidianTree · 11/04/2024 22:11

Please note: Mounjaro can only be taken if your BMI is above 30.

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system.

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after than a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be be other side effects also. Read info here :
www.medicines.org.uk/emc/files/pil.14201.pdf

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. Ask for suggestions of sites /types to buy.

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day. There are protein supplements you can take. Myprotein have a good range. Ask for a referral code if you want to buy some.

11 - Some natural sources of protein:
www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein
www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

12 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), electrolytes.

13 - Drink lota of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

14 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

15 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
further reading about injection sites and the effects: www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

16 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

17 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

18 - Some of the places you can order from are:

  • MedExpress - £149.99 - Sometimes there are codes that can be used for a discount. Ask for a code on here or do a Google search to try and find one.
  • Voy - £114.99 for first month then £229 after. Need a referral code (ask on here for one if needed)
  • The Family Chemist -£149
  • Simple online pharmacy - £159 2.5mg £179 for 5mg
  • Bolt pharmacy 2.5mg £125, 5mg £179. Or starter pack with 2.5mg and 5mg pen £319
  • Asda £184
  • Boots £219
  • Chemist4U £179
  • Pharmacy2u
  • Superdrug
There other other sellers, we don't have them all listed

19 - If you want to switch suppliers, make sure you have pics of your Mounjaro box with your name and dose. This will come in useful when other suppliers ask for evidence.

I did my first 2.5mg dose yesterday just under 24 hours ago. Feel good except my upper half of my body is feeling so sore! Like I’ve overdone it at the gym. Did anyone else have this?

I had that but lower half! Legs felt so sore by bedtime and the next evening. Only happened the first few doses though.

Glad avocado is ok. But eek that tiny sausage roll can cause problems!
Someone up thread had samosa regret. Maybe pastry is an issue?

Yes I remember reading about #samosaregret. Such as shame as it’s the food of the gods.

I had a tiny slice of citron gateaux the other night. Really tiny. 8cm x3cm - so small. I couldn’t finish it!!

is anyone else totally off booze? I have a total aversion. So weird.

KeepingUndercover · 17/04/2024 16:12

I haven't been drinking @AgathaMystery
I don't drink a lot anyway but now I've just completely lost the desire too.

Yes it's hideous isn't it. I've felt suicidal in the run up to my period before, then as soon as it comes I can literally feel the tension drain out of my body. Its very strange what hormones can do. I would cry at work and get this weird anxious, despairing rage! I was put on a low dose of HRT and that helped, but some months it still comes.

I'm hoping that a bit of weightloss might help with this as I can exercise a bit better with less weight to carry around.

@MeAndMounjaro that sounds like a lovely weekend treat brunch! I reckon I could use the Warburton's protein bagel thins I got and make a breakfast muffin dupe. Mmmmm.

Yep! It's my current go to lunch without the eggs when I am WFH and don't want to think too hard. The patties take about 10 mins in an Air Fryer. Would work as a quick dinner with eggs I guess! Possibilities are endless 😆

BlackFriYay · 17/04/2024 16:20

@Soukmyfalafel We sound very similar. I'm also another one with suspected PMDD and I turn into a completely different person the week before my period.

I've just finished but was a right miserable cow in the lead up and it didn't help matters that my weight loss completely stalled meaning I didn't lose anything in just over a week. That is absolutely fine of course but for me felt like a real bummer. I was scrolling through tiktok and everything was making me cry 🙄

@RagzRebooted I can definitely relate to the suicidal ideation during 'hell week' too.

I was anemic a few months ago but had to stop my iron tabs because I have gastritis and they made me feel so ill, so I'm probably still low on iron now to be honest.

Oh the joys of being a woman.

I did but it was my lower body rather than top. It was so sore I couldn’t have anything touching it which made for a very difficult night sleep! A couple of painkillers took the edge off it but it didn’t completely go away. It’s tons better now though

Samosa regret was more because she ate it late in the evening I think, 😁. I've had a small vegetable samosas for lunch on several occasions and been fine.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 17/04/2024 16:38

@AgathaMystery yep, completely gone of booze, especially wine. The peri menopause put me off a bit anyway, but at the moment I could quite happily not drink again.

RagzRebooted · 17/04/2024 17:45

The only time I've drunk alcohol since starting was on our anniversary and I didn't drink a lot, spread it out over 5 hours and then drank tea and a hot chocolate in the hotel room while DH drank a bottle of wine! I still felt a little more hungover than I'd have expected.
I'd usually have half a bottle of wine on Friday and Saturday with DH, but I'm just not fancying it (plus don't want the extra calories).

Investinmyself · 17/04/2024 17:46

All caught up. I’ve just taken my second 5mg yesterday but appetite is definitely back last few days. I injected thigh not stomach so hoping it kicks in. I’ve also been wanting chocolate which I haven’t been for past month.
Weight has been static for 6 days. Definitely need to drink more water.
Hoping just a blip and I carry on losing.

Uglyducklingswan · 17/04/2024 17:46

Evening all, jumping in for the first time, after stalking the threads. I got my first pen and did the first dose today. So much to lose, so glad to have started.
im worried I didn’t do it right though. Can I ask about using the pen (I watched videos but still confused)? I clicked to 0.6 (6 clicks) but im doubting myself that wasn’t enough? Or too much?

No, it should click all the way to the number 1. It's about 60 clicks.

CiderJabs · 17/04/2024 17:51

Ragz is right, you have injected a very small amount. I believe the full dose is 60 clicks so you'll need to inject a further 54 for a full dose. It does feel like you're forever turning the plunger to get to number 1!!

Uglyducklingswan · 17/04/2024 17:55

Goodness me! I’m so glad I asked, thank you so much! I was confused by the box which mentions 0.6.

thanks so much @RagzRebooted and @CiderJabs

Moanranger · 17/04/2024 17:57

Re calorie tracking - I am a believer. Using Nutracheck, I can put in favourites & recipes & it makes tracking really easy. SoMe & Mounjaro’s meal could be recorded in the meal section & every time it’s eaten you just click on that meal.
For me, it’s really important. It reduces snacking because I think “oh, I have to record that”

Rainbowl · 17/04/2024 18:04

Welcome @Uglyducklingswan every time I inject, I have the step by step instructions in front of me and I read the next step every time so I can’t get it wrong. The videos are useful but you can’t go wrong with reading and re-reading the instructions as you go. Good luck!

I am she of #samosaregret. I think it was a combo of the high fat content and the late hour. Not good at all!

plinter · 17/04/2024 19:16

I managed to gain 3lbs overnight! I do get fluctuations which is why I weigh daily, it helps me see a trend. According to my period tracking app I am ovulating today - apparently that can be linked to water retention.
On a more positive note, when putting on my freshly washed jeans this morning I didn't have to lie down on the bed and squeeze myself in! I've also moved to a tighter notch on my belt!
My favourite NSV is noticing that I am less out of breath when walking up the hill I live on - I'm only 8lbs lighter so far, but that is probably a couple of bags of shopping!
I'm not tracking calories- just trying to eat nutritious foods and limit processed foods.

schoolie258 · 17/04/2024 19:36

Newbie here.

I have just been approved for mounjaro. Nervous to take it once it arrives!!

The pen looks so complicated to use and I have no idea how it works. Is there any videos that walk you through it? I've read the guide but it's not really making sense on my head. The needles, the dosage, the clicks etc are all confusing.

Especially when people are talking about this fith dose you can swueeze out

Welcome! If you look at the first post on the thread there's a really good video about injecting at the end of it. Plus lots of other useful info. I wouldn't worry about the extra dose at this point, when you get to that point you can ask about it and you'll be more familiar with the pen by then.
