Continuing Mounjaro...part 5

1000 replies

ObsidianTree · 11/04/2024 22:11

Please note: Mounjaro can only be taken if your BMI is above 30.

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system.

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after than a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be be other side effects also. Read info here :
www.medicines.org.uk/emc/files/pil.14201.pdf

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. Ask for suggestions of sites /types to buy.

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day. There are protein supplements you can take. Myprotein have a good range. Ask for a referral code if you want to buy some.

11 - Some natural sources of protein:
www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein
www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

12 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), electrolytes.

13 - Drink lota of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

14 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

15 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
further reading about injection sites and the effects: www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

16 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

17 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

18 - Some of the places you can order from are:

  • MedExpress - £149.99 - Sometimes there are codes that can be used for a discount. Ask for a code on here or do a Google search to try and find one.
  • Voy - £114.99 for first month then £229 after. Need a referral code (ask on here for one if needed)
  • The Family Chemist -£149
  • Simple online pharmacy - £159 2.5mg £179 for 5mg
  • Bolt pharmacy 2.5mg £125, 5mg £179. Or starter pack with 2.5mg and 5mg pen £319
  • Asda £184
  • Boots £219
  • Chemist4U £179
  • Pharmacy2u
  • Superdrug
There other other sellers, we don't have them all listed

19 - If you want to switch suppliers, make sure you have pics of your Mounjaro box with your name and dose. This will come in useful when other suppliers ask for evidence.

Wow, just had a mammoth catch up. Been away with my little ones for a couple of days and didn’t do much MNetting, so I had loads to read! Also been a bit preoccupied by national offer day for primary school - my eldest is going to our first choice school so I’m delighted with that 😁

I’m due to take my fourth 2.5mg dose this week. I am not sure what to do about the next pen. 2.5mg is working so well for me, I am losing weight quickly, no side effects, feeling really great. But I’m worried that this could start to wear off halfway through the next pen and I’ll be annoyed that I’m stuck on 2.5mg.

Having said that, I do also think that if it did start to have less of an effect, I could use that time to exercise a bit more willpower. I’m not having to use any at the moment but will do when I get to maintenance so I need to get used to it.

Lots to think about!

Thesnowfellfast · 16/04/2024 20:08

Took my first 5mg dose on Sunday and it's absolutely kicking my arse!
Food aversion, super dry mouth, thirsty thirsty thirsty and my gag reflex has gone to pot. Can't even think about swallowing my supplements without heaving a little.
Do the side effects ease after your first big increase? Or am I doomed until I go up to 7.5mg?

Oh and spotting! Wtf?! Is that normal?!

MelissaLouRocks · 16/04/2024 20:15

RagzRebooted · 16/04/2024 19:53

I thought it was absorbed over 24 hours like most subcutaneous injections, but the body removes it from your system gradually, hence the half life 5 days.

Hmmmm, I will have to look at that, you have me racking my brain now! I was aware of the half life being 5 days, but was sure I read something about the absorption rates, I will have to see if I can find it again!

However, it probably wouldn't be wise with a hot bath so soon after injecting. I have to use various other injections, and it's something my consultant has always warned me about.

ObsidianTree · 16/04/2024 20:18

@Rainbowl welcome back ☺️ I would say take your 4th dose, see how that effects you then decide. I have seen a lot of people say they were content on 2.5mg, but by the time they got to the 4/5th dose they felt like it wasn't working anymore. So hard to say how each person is effected etc.

Could you get the 5mg, and count 30 clicks to take a 2.5mg dose. Then if you felt it wasn't working well enough, you could increase to the full 5mg, if that makes sense?

Sometimes the first dose is the hardest to get used to. But if it's having a bad effect, then it could get worse when you take you next shot as that would be added a lot more on top of what's left in your body from previous weeks!

Hopefully the symptoms will ease soon.

Maybe if it's still really bad in a few days, maybe leave an extra day or two before your next injection. Or take half a dose to just have 2.5mg from the pen? In the hopes that by the week after you'll feel ready for the 5mg.

Hope you feel better soon

Marmies64 · 16/04/2024 20:25

@Thesnowfellfast I can't comment on the side effects as I'm still on 2.5mg but the spotting is definitely a royal pain in the ovaries! My body has also done a complete 360 to my usual light TOTM - hasn't been that bad since I was about 16! Definitely caught me unawares and is a symptom I'm very much hoping will eff off next month 😅

Thesnowfellfast · 16/04/2024 20:32

@Letsgoogogo my first 4 weeks on 2.5 were a breeze. Only feeling cold and thirsty with a tiny spell of nausea here and there. I've always done it in my belly but alternate sides each week. I didn't get much of an extra dose on my last 2.5mg as I must have been priming the needle a little too well and there wasn't much left!!

@ObsidianTree going to preserve and hope it gets better but good thinking on half doses if it doesn't calm down. How are you finding the 5mg compared to the 2.5?

@Marmies64 I know right, I've been consisten since my mid teens and now I'm all over the place! Annoying, but still something I can handle to be slimmer and healthier!

ObsidianTree · 16/04/2024 20:35

@Thesnowfellfast I didn't feel much difference on 2.5mg and felt better on 5mg for a while. Now I feel ready to go up to 7.5mg. I haven't had any severe side effects so far.

OP posts:
blahwork · 16/04/2024 20:45

Hi everyone, I'm 2 injections in now on 2.5mg.

I feel absolutely no different and don't think my eating is different at all but somehow I've lost 10lbs?!!! How?! Why?!

Marmies64 · 16/04/2024 20:55

@Thesnowfellfast yes, although inconvenient it's definitely worth the hassle in my opinion!

A few people have recommended injecting in the thigh for less nausea and gastric issues (something to do with faster absorption rates for belly jabs). Perhaps try doing this when you're ready for the next round and it might not be so hard-hitting? Really hope the horrible side effects ease up for you soon!

Yeah I think that’s a good idea. MedExpress sell them both at the same price so I guess it’s more cost effective too.

I will probably also do as @ObsidianTree suggests and wait until after my next dose and see how I feel then.

@JanetSnakeholeMacklin we started at the same time, are you moving up to 5mg for your next pen?

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 16/04/2024 21:04

@Rainbowl congrats. My eldest got her first choice too - we were very surprised and very relieved!
We were so preoccupied with that we never prepped anything for tea tonight so now we're having a takeaway which is not good as we're falling back into weekly 'treats'.

ChristmasLightsLover · 16/04/2024 21:05

What's the minimum amount of calories someone should eat each day? I'm on 5mg and feel nausea but just am not hungry. I've actually felt worse when eating. I tried different kinds of food today - carbs, vehicles, sweet treats. Nothing feels edible.

In many ways it's great. But in others I am just knackered. It's likely just a 24 hour thing. I'm going to put myself to bed soon. But would be good to hear from others on this.

Congrats to you too! We had been told repeatedly we should be fine (just outside catchment border) but I wasn’t going to be confident until I saw it in black and white!

It’s hard if you want to celebrate / have an easy meal with family. Don’t beat yourself up about it.

We’ve decided to try and commit to a monthly takeaway only (on pay day) and then we try to keep the freezer and cupboards stocked up with last minute meals for times when we’ve not organised a proper meal.

I’d feel like shit if I ate vehicles 😉😉😉

Can you do fluids? Maybe some soup, hot chocolate or protein drink? No other suggestions as I’m not even two weeks into 2.5 but hope you feel better very quickly 🙂

Pigriver · 16/04/2024 21:25

@ChristmasLightsLover I'm feeling very similar. I hardly ate all day until dinner and even then it wasn't much. I've been and bought some juices and kefir as I've not been able to drink my usual protein shake for the last few days (I add fruit, skyr, almond butter, chia and flax- so usually a good nutritious filler to sip throughout the morning). Today at lunch I managed a single rice cake and felt sick.

I feel hungry now so going to try and eat some protein and veg as I just don't think it healthy to eat few few calories.

ChristmasLightsLover · 16/04/2024 21:28

2 Why did I not think of soup or a shake? We have plenty in the cupboards. I could have sieved it and just had the liquid. Gah! Now laid on my bed, procrastinating over having a shower. So tired...

Onwards. Tomorrow will be better!

Fucking Nora. A bullet point and a number 2???!!! I give up. I am taking my toys home.

KeepingUndercover · 16/04/2024 21:32

My second dose of 5mg is not enjoyable so far. I felt yesterday like I had a bowling ball sat in my stomach after lunch. Today I just haven't felt up to eating and I had the dreaded sulfur burps.

I did manage to eat some dinner. I'm hoping I feel better tomorrow and a bit more like eating.

guestusername · 16/04/2024 21:40

Hey! Yeah I'm going up to 5mg after my fourth 2.5 - it's chilling in the fridge already. I have a lot to lose so I want to get to an official therapeutic dose asap. What are you doing after your fourth 2.5?

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 16/04/2024 22:04

@Rainbowl we'd committed to one takeaway a month too and at first it was easy. Now we're falling behind with keeping in food that we can still cook in a rush.

The takeaway taught us a lesson to stick to the one per month though. First they gave us the wrong food (some weird deep fried chicken vileness) so DP went back out in the rain to swap it. Then after eating it we found a sodding hair in the sauce.
We both feel sick and despite not having a Chinese meal for months, we do not want another any time soon 😄
