Continuing Mounjaro...part 5

ObsidianTree · 11/04/2024 22:11

Please note: Mounjaro can only be taken if your BMI is above 30.

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system.

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after than a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be be other side effects also. Read info here :
www.medicines.org.uk/emc/files/pil.14201.pdf

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. Ask for suggestions of sites /types to buy.

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day. There are protein supplements you can take. Myprotein have a good range. Ask for a referral code if you want to buy some.

11 - Some natural sources of protein:
www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein
www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

12 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), electrolytes.

13 - Drink lota of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

14 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

15 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
further reading about injection sites and the effects: www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

16 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

17 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

18 - Some of the places you can order from are:

  • MedExpress - £149.99 - Sometimes there are codes that can be used for a discount. Ask for a code on here or do a Google search to try and find one.
  • Voy - £114.99 for first month then £229 after. Need a referral code (ask on here for one if needed)
  • The Family Chemist -£149
  • Simple online pharmacy - £159 2.5mg £179 for 5mg
  • Bolt pharmacy 2.5mg £125, 5mg £179. Or starter pack with 2.5mg and 5mg pen £319
  • Asda £184
  • Boots £219
  • Chemist4U £179
  • Pharmacy2u
  • Superdrug
There other other sellers, we don't have them all listed

19 - If you want to switch suppliers, make sure you have pics of your Mounjaro box with your name and dose. This will come in useful when other suppliers ask for evidence.

@ObsidianTree hi - as we are discussing how it works I went back to the first post on the thread to find the patient leaflet. It seems the leaflet has been updated so your link no longer works. This is the new link for when we get to thread 6:

@ObsidianTree I have gone from 12.5 yesterday to 12.2 this morning. Which is 2lbs lower than my previous lowest.

It show how much our bodies can retain or bloat. From gaining each day to a sudden drop. I need to remember this for next period. I don’t mind if weight loss slows one bit. In fact, it would probably be a good idea.

Sri Lanka sounds great. 😍

Yes I think for next time you will expect it so it won't be as upsetting. Hopefully!

@FlappyFish well done on the whoosh! I have been empathising massively with you this week so am really pleased for you. @ObsidianTree I think I read that it's best to keep the pen in hand luggage - firstly so it is less likely to go missing and secondly because of the extreme temperatures in the hold that could affect the medicine.
I'll be away for 2 jabs-worth so am packing pens (may be finishing 5mg and moving to 7.5mg whilst away...) and in the suitcase the needles and sharps box.

Speaking of which, I have no idea how to dispose of the sharps box when it is full - has anyone done so? I seem to remember reading about taking it to a pharmacy but not sure if that is right.

Pharmacies will not accept them. Take to your GP as they already have a clinical waste disposal service. Also depending on your county, you can request your local council collect it for disposal, but this is now sadly yet another postcode lottery.

All this insulin messing is giving me the fear for when I get to goal and stop taking it.

I don’t want to take this drug forever. But when I stopped Saxenda I ballooned.

The Mounjaro can help slow your digestion and suppress your appetite so you find it much easier to lose weight but during this time we need to learn a new way of eating so we can maintain our lower weight when we come off it.

I know my problem areas are eating snacks in the evening, thinking that if food is on my plate I must eat it and letting myself get so hungry I then eat the wrong thing and a lot of it. As I start to think about stopping Mounjaro I want to focus on how to not get bored in the evening so I eat, eating slower and listening to my body's signals that I am full and having healthy snacks to keep me from getting ravenous.

It's not going to be easy every day but if I can manage it 80% of the time it should be enough to keep me at my new weight.

ObsidianTree · 14/04/2024 11:56

Thanks @Femeia . I need to stop being paranoid!

I'll take the pen and pack the needles I think.

Pinched this off a Facebook group, I love the simple explanation. I may pin it in the bathroom above the scales. 😂

I said the other day that I couldn’t see any difference in myself yet. My DH just got back from 2 weeks away and he says he can see a difference. So that’s a nice boost. Even if there’s a long way to go!

I’m actually quite open to having to use these drugs long term. I’ve been overweight my whole life and I think I may well need medical help to stop that always being the case. Hopefully there will be further advances in treatments that will help those of us who’ve just always struggled with obesity.

Yes I’ve come to terms with the idea that this may need to be a lifelong thing. I know that diabetes is hovering in my future if I remain overweight, which would mean a lifetime on other medication, so I’d prefer this one!

I am only week 2 (nearly week 3) and thinking about my next order.

I originally ordered through pharmacy2u. Has anyone else successfully done a reorder on it? It keeps taking me back to the first order weight questionnaire. I am trying to do this on mobile (not the app) so could try the computer. But I wondered if anyone else has had a similar issue?

Cheers.

I’ve had 2 orders from pharmacy2u no issues.

Femeia · 14/04/2024 12:24

That's a great explanation of the whoosh - thanks!

I've ordered 3 times from Pharmacy2U, you have to do the questionnaire from scratch each time, which is a bit annoying

Investinmyself · 14/04/2024 12:25

Well done @CiderJabs tgats amazing for 2 weeks AI. I think holidays are an area lots of us struggle. I’m definitely in the diet for weeks before hols, put weight on on holiday then I go into winter carrying the extra that’s hard to shift and gain more.
Glad you saw the result you wanted @FlappyFish it is hard keeping the faith it will come off and not letting the might as-well just eat as it’s not working sneak in.

NCfor24 · 14/04/2024 12:28

I did my extra 5th dose of 2.5 on Friday but haven't had my usual side effects or anything and I am HUNGRY. I don't have any clue how much I got as I used a screw on pen needle not the extraction method. The injection site also hasn't bruised like before so maybe it was a fail all round.
Do you think I'm asking for trouble if I do my first 5mg dose today?

@ObsidianTree
I wouldn't do it so soon tbh. Can you force your way through another day or two to give more of a gap?

I can manage, I think, but then I'm into my work week and my side effects have generally been day of jab and following day. Having said that they have been totally minimal so far.

KeepingUndercover · 14/04/2024 12:42

I definitely felt it more when I went up to 5, having had minimal side effects on 2.5 @NCfor24, which is why I’d be a bit wary in case you did get a decent dose with that extra one. Tough one.

NoImNotCurvyImFat · 14/04/2024 12:50

Thank you FlappyFish

I need to plan out my days better eat earlier and drink plenty of water

acid reflux isn’t so bad, have an odd taste in my mouth and ate a small late breakfast half a slice of bread and half a hard boiled egg with tea

I’ve read on here quite a few are not telling people they are using Mounjaro I’ve decided to yell only one friend. I don’t want to hear it’s cheating, all you need to do is xyz etc I need the help getting there and hopefully this shall be I

i also suspect some friends don’t mind they have a chubby friend we can all be shallow at times

Ohhhh! Sorry I wasn't being a cow, that's great. I thought it was an autocorrect on 'work out' and never even thought of it as workwear so I was thinking of kitchen counters 😆 I did a long walk yesterday and was shattered so blame my silly brain on exhaustion!

Thanks @Femeia and @Investinmyself I’ve said the psychological side of this is the hardest. Eating is easy. It’s our brains that are the buggers and mess with us.

ObsidianTree · 14/04/2024 13:09

@KeepingUndercover @GoingDownDown I hear what you say about feeling like you need the drug long term.

I really hope that by the time we get to our goal weights the UK start letting us stay on the medication for maintenance.

I think I would end up regaining if I came off the drug so would like the option to keep on it like the Americans do.

Also hope they invent something that we can use for life to maintain our weightlosses.

Good point. I'll wait another day or so I think.

KeepingUndercover · 14/04/2024 13:17

Yes I'm really hoping for more break throughs medically. I am going to do everything I can myself as well, including really building a proper exercise routine. I'm actually not so focused on my BMI to determine my health. I would be fine being technically overweight if I felt fit and healthy with a good diet and getting plenty of exercise.
