Please help with wedding food choice

I'm MoH for one of my oldest friends, she's asked for help with food choices (among many other things Grin)

The venue is lovely, and they've chosen to have a hog roast + wood fired pizzas. But, we're going back and forward over pizza choices, wise mumsnetters, what would you do?

They have about 200 guests coming (all adults) and about 20 of them are veggies plus a couple who don't eat red meat. No vegans, and none of the meat eaters have an issue with pork, as far as we know.

The venue has suggested a plain cheese and tomato pizza and one with chicken, to meet all dietary needs. But, do people really like chicken on pizzas?

Also, as one of the veggies, I'd be happy with a pizza, but disappointed if it the only choice was a margaritta, that's what my kids eat! It feels like a kids pizza, if you know what I mean?

The venue has lots of lovely ingredients for a posh adult pizza - all the usual including artichokes / goats cheese / spinach / feta etc, so they can easily make something else if we order it.

AIBU to suggest two veggie pizzas - one with all the lovely toppings and one plain?

There's going to be a whopping great hog roast, so the meat eaters will be well catered for!

Or if not, maybe one veggie with all the topings and one with salami or pepperoni?

Or a chicken, like the venue says, but a more adult veggie pizza with it?

WWYD? Thanks :)

Hmm I'm vegetarian and i wouldn't mind just having a nice plain pizza. It wouldn't be my first choice but it is tricky to cater to loads of different people with different tastes and dietary requirements. As long as there's something I can eat at a wedding I don't really care what it is. Can't comment on the chicken options but I think most people who eat meat would assume one option would have meat on it.

OneThreadOnly · 04/05/2024 12:46

I’m a meat eater but prefer plain cheese pizza. I absolutely despise “posh” pizza they have a tiny sprinkle of cheese, not a proper amount and the fancy cheeses are even worse!

AntiHop · 04/05/2024 12:47

I agree with you op. I'm a vegetarian and margherita pizza would be soooo disappointing when there's all that meaty food. At the very least I'd have one fancy pizza without meat. If it was me, I'd have both pizzas vegetarian.

MrsSkylerWhite · 04/05/2024 12:49

Chicken on a pizza : noooooo!

RuthW · 04/05/2024 12:49

Both vegetarian. One plain one posh. I'm a meat eater.

countrygirl99 · 04/05/2024 12:51

I love pizza but a definite no to chicken.

radishpatch · 04/05/2024 12:51

Yeah I'd go veggie on the pizzas too. One cheese and tom, and maybe on spinach red onion and goats cheese? Are there any other dishes like salad or something? Is the hog roast literally just the meat? Usually it comes with rolls and a couple of salads.

RainStreakedWindows · 04/05/2024 12:51

Agree pizza should not have chicken on it. I'm a big meat eater but I'd say one plain pizza and one fancy veg pizza.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 04/05/2024 12:54

I like chicken on a pizza, especially with mushrooms. In this situation, I’d go for a veggie pizza with a nice selection of veg on it, and a chicken one, with some nice veg too.

Berlinlover · 04/05/2024 12:55

I love chicken on a pizza.

ICanFixHim · 04/05/2024 12:57

I eat meat but almost always have a veggie pizza unless I fancy pepperoni occasionally.

I'd also go for a couple of veggie pizzas, one fancy and one more simple.

I love roasted veggies and mushrooms.

Comedycook · 04/05/2024 13:00

Chickens on pizza is awful. I'm a meat eater and would choose the plain cheese and tomato over the chicken. I imagine lots of other people would do the same.

parttimeweddingplanner · 04/05/2024 13:01

Thanks for the replies, lots to think about!

Think I might do pizza for lunch just now 😄

Yes, the hog roast comes with a roll and both come with salad.

One plain and one posh veggie would be best. Gives everyone a choice.

Ragamuffin8 · 04/05/2024 13:06

I eat meat, but would happily eat a veggie pizza if it was nice.

Cheese & tomato is dull though, and hate chicken on a pizza!

Love the suggestion of spinach/feta/red onion, or how about ham & mushroom or Hawaiian? Or a 2nd veggie pizza (just not plain).

Roryhon · 04/05/2024 13:07

I’m veggie. I think go for two veggie pizzas.

Another thought is a load of grilled halloumi to go in rolls. I find it a good veggie alternative when people are having pork. You could do rolls of halloumi too. Then one veg, one meat pizza - to even things up.

WombatChocolate · 04/05/2024 13:10

Yeah, 1 Margaret it and 1 veggie , given there’s hog roast too. Meat eaters are perfectly happy with veggie pizza.

But honsestly, don’t over-think it. No-one will remmeber 2 days later what was on the pizza they ate.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 04/05/2024 13:11

Two different types of veg pizza.

The meat eaters already getting g a hog roast

New2024newname · 04/05/2024 13:13

I think your idea is great (and I am a meat-eater). Chicken on pizza is bleurgh and it feels unbalanced to have just margarita for veggies with a meaty pizza and hog roast. Plain and fancy veggie pizzas will appeal to everyone! Side note I think it’s a bit crap of the place to only offer two pizza options, it’s so easy to just put toppings on pizza and it’s not like it can be done in advance anyway. But you can’t help that!

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 04/05/2024 13:15

I would like to have things like pepper, mushroom, spinach on a vegetarian pizza - but please not the goats cheese! A couple of tubs of salad would be good too - one green salad and one something like potato, pasta or rice salad.

I do see that you have a much smaller portion of veggies there, but don't forget that a lot of meat eaters also like vegetarian food and I can see the pizzas being quite popular as opposed to a pork sandwich .

BiPolarBabe · 04/05/2024 13:15

Now I love chicken on a pizza, however in this situation I'd definitely go for cheese and tomato and a posher veggie pizza.
But I'd do two thirds cheese and tomato and one third posh pizza. As pretty much everyone eats cheese and tomato and even seemingly unfussy eaters get weird over pizza toppings.
Meat eaters have the hog roast and will probably eat cheese and tomato as standard anyway.

This. I’m not keen on pork so would be eating pizza. Used to be vegetarian and would have been so disappointed with plain pizza if everyone else was having a bbq.

BarrelOfOtters · 04/05/2024 13:17

I don’t like chicken on pizza.

WittyBird · 04/05/2024 13:18

I’m a veggie that can’t eat pizza. (I always self cater at events.)

No mention of allergies but you’re likely to have dairy/gluten/nightshade intolerant people in that group, not just meat eater/veggie.
