Please help with wedding food choice

I'm MoH for one of my oldest friends, she's asked for help with food choices (among many other things Grin)

The venue is lovely, and they've chosen to have a hog roast + wood fired pizzas. But, we're going back and forward over pizza choices, wise mumsnetters, what would you do?

They have about 200 guests coming (all adults) and about 20 of them are veggies plus a couple who don't eat red meat. No vegans, and none of the meat eaters have an issue with pork, as far as we know.

The venue has suggested a plain cheese and tomato pizza and one with chicken, to meet all dietary needs. But, do people really like chicken on pizzas?

Also, as one of the veggies, I'd be happy with a pizza, but disappointed if it the only choice was a margaritta, that's what my kids eat! It feels like a kids pizza, if you know what I mean?

The venue has lots of lovely ingredients for a posh adult pizza - all the usual including artichokes / goats cheese / spinach / feta etc, so they can easily make something else if we order it.

AIBU to suggest two veggie pizzas - one with all the lovely toppings and one plain?

There's going to be a whopping great hog roast, so the meat eaters will be well catered for!

Or if not, maybe one veggie with all the topings and one with salami or pepperoni?

Or a chicken, like the venue says, but a more adult veggie pizza with it?

WWYD? Thanks :)

Deffo two veggie pizzas, one goats cheese and artichoke, one just chargrilled veg

murasaki · 04/05/2024 19:28

As a self-confessed greedy gobbler, I'd like to try both the hog roast and the pizza....

Just a thought: is the hog roast one with a whole suckling pig on a spit.
That really puts me off and I eat meat now. Was a veggie once. Imagine veggies may find it quite upsetting?

Then they can suck it up, can't they. Not their wedding.

Babyboomtastic · 04/05/2024 19:40

I'd definitely be wanting both, and assuming that would be the norm. How much pizza are they assuming each person will eat? It's a great idea for evening food, where people are happy to graze on never ending platters of pizza arriving, but I'm not sure how it would work for the wedding breakfast.

Also I'm pretty shocked that they only offer two types, given they'll be having them up as they go along. When I do wood fired pizzas for friends/birthday parties I tend to do about 5 different ones. I'd have assumed you'd west something like Margherita, ham and pineapple, pepperoni and then 1 or 2 veggie ones.

DonnasShrugaleros · 04/05/2024 19:52

Eugh chicken is too dry for pizza

Hopingtobe4 · 04/05/2024 20:01

I'm.a meat eater but love the veggie delight pizza m&s do. I'd recommend looking at whats all on that and mimicking lol - will be even nicer obvs from a wood fire.oven etc.

Or check a few pizza places veggie options. One near Mr does peat, goats cheese and caramelised onion and its amazing

Oh and a few pizzas place I know won't do pepperoni as they say that's American no Italian...they might say the same (I love pepperoni too)

Agree w pp that the hog roast visuals are off-putting. And kind of death-oriented for what is supposed to be a happy and festive occasion.

I would not be able to eat anything if the dead animal were center stage.

Are you vegan or vegetarian?

Thanks so much everyone, you've given us the confidence to go with 2 veggie pizzas. Very pleasantly surprised to see how popular that is! Now the agonising starts over which ones Grin

Does anyone fancy saying what pizza you'd like made from this list (basically all the veggie ingredients the venue does that the bride likes!)

Mushrooms
Cherry toms
Artichokes
Roast peppers
Red Onion
Chilli
Olives
Spinach
Sun dried tomatoes
Feta
Ricotta
Goats Cheese
Smoked Cheddar

All of those sound good. Much better than most pizza abominations in this country, dominated by processed pork, chicken, sweetcorn or pineapple, none of which should ever be served on pizza.

I think for this type of event they serve the pizza by the slice rather than attempt to serve an entire pizza per person at a time, so you don't need to worry about people being without food for ages while others work their way through an entire pizza.

Yeah, as I said it wouldn't be my first choice, but it's not my wedding - or yours! - and the B&G both want the hog roast, there isn't a question about that.

I had no idea hating chicken on a pizza is a thing. I love chicken on a pizza 😂

In this situation I would personally go with cheese and tomato and then a veggie pizza with more veggies on it or is in some way more exciting. (But no mushrooms cos I hate them and I know in life I've met a bunch of other people who share my hatred for mushrooms 😂 )

motherofawhirlwind · 05/05/2024 23:11

I'd do

Cheese and tomato, but mozzarella and sun dried tomato, maybe roasted peppers too
Posh veggie one with artichokes etc.

And then, if people want a meaty pizza, they can put hog roast meat on top themselves

Verite1 · 05/05/2024 23:15

Red onion, spinach and goats cheese.
or mushrooms, cherry tomato and artichoke.
Don’t add chilli - hard to get the right balance on a pizza.

CadyEastman · 06/05/2024 11:34

A plain pizza would be fine. My better than when we attended a posh do with a Hog Roast and my Vegetarian DFriend was offered a nap with just the apple sauce.

ShadesofPoachedSmoke · 06/05/2024 13:25

Mushrooms
Cherry toms
Artichokes
Roast peppers
Red Onion
Chilli
Olives
Spinach
Sun dried tomatoes
Feta
Ricotta
Goats Cheese
Smoked Cheddar

Option 1 Spinach, ricotta and tomatoes (I'd prefer sun dried but cherry might be a safer option)

Option 2 feta, chilli, red onion and roast peppers

I'd avoid artichokes and olives as many people don't like them/wouldn't try them.

Most veggies I know are sick to death of goats cheese on everything as it's been ubiquitous for veggie dishes for a few years now.

Mushrooms need to super fresh and recently cut. They can go weirdly slimy on pizza if not.

LipstickedPowderedAndPainted · 06/05/2024 13:30

I'm a vegetarian and a good margarita pizza is wonderful. I'd think a hug today me than covers meat eaters so do a plain pizza ( as long as its one made with propper mozzarella) and a fancy vegetarian one. Things like goat's cheese and caremilsed onions always seen to be popular in posh pizza.

What sides are they having? Salad etc?

JeepSleeHack · 06/05/2024 13:37

quarter pepperoni
quarter margarita
quarter mushroom
quarter veg: red onion, chilli, peppers, artichoke

Im not especially greedy, but if there was both hog roast and pizza available, I’d assume that I’d be able to have both.

BoudiccaOfSuburbia · 06/05/2024 13:39

Agreed: The pizza choices need to be veggie.

I love artichokes and olives and hate goat cheese.

I would probably go for Spinach and Ricotta, and mushroom and Olive.

Olives are v easy to
pick off for refuseniks.
