Help! Eloping at York registry office

32 replies

Melw96 · 18/12/2023 18:39

Hi all!
Me and my partner are eloping at York registry office on 6th February at 1215. None of our friends or family know we are getting married so we obviously can't ask any of them to witness for us. Does anyone know how/where to find witnesses?
We have to send our paperwork in 4 weeks before the ceremony so we're cutting it fine as it is.
Thanks in advance for your help & advice! X

Bumped to get this in the active list.
I found my witnesses on here so hopefully someone will help you too.

I'm in north Leeds and would be happy to catch the train up and be your witness. I've always wanted to do this 😃

My aunt used to be a registrar in Edinburgh for many, many years and she always told lovely stories of couples who were eloping ❤️

Melw96 · 18/12/2023 20:50

Thank you so much @SingingSands that's so kind of you! We would love to take you up on that if that's okay? Could I message you? X

This is lovely. I wish I lived closer, I'd volunteer to if I lived closer, but sadly I'm the other end of the country.

@Melw96
Absolutely! ❤️

I work in the centre of York and would be honoured to help out if you still need another witness, just message me.

I was a wedding winded for a mumnetter in York a few years ago. I'm on annual leave that week. So I you don't find anyone local
I'll do it. I
Always up for a trip to York.

Toddlerteaplease · 30/12/2023 20:18

The couple I did it for, were also eloping. And another mumsnetter was a witness. T

My daughter is free then and a student at York. DM me and I’ll put you in touch. As a student she could bring a friend with her.

I can't help but I've just had a look at York Registrar Office and what a beautiful place to get married!

Hope you're sorted for witnesses now Flowers

Toddlerteaplease · 01/01/2024 22:30

Just realised that I'm
Heading up to Penrith on that day, so will be passing by York. Will happily take a detour if you still need anyone. Please DM me.

The couple I witnessed for got married in an office full of computers which was a bit odd!

That is a bit odd.

@PinkMimosa the fire place was beautiful, but it wasn't a ceremony room! But I don't think k the couple cared about the trimmings. They just wanted to be married. I hope they are still very happy.

I think we need I eloped and had MN witnesses catch up thread so we know what they're all doing now Wink

Toddlerteaplease · 03/01/2024 20:39

@PinkMimosa yes!

Mairzydotes · 03/01/2024 21:05

Can you email the registrar team and tell them you require witnesses as you are eloping?. They might have a system for finding them or have people they ask .

UnimaginableWindBird · 03/01/2024 21:18

I also work in the centre of York, and could witness your wedding in my lunch break if you were interested.

If it's just a 2 witness wedding, you do just literally get married in an office with a desk and computer and filing cabinets. It's a nice enough room - we registered the DC's births there, but it's just a normal office in a nice building. But it's an extra £250 for the fancy room.

There used to be a mid-range option where you could invite up to 8 guests to a small room that wasn't an office, but I think that went out of use during COVID and was never brought back.

It was covid times wasn't it, still lots of social distancing but it was like they'd just unlocked the place for an hour and found an abandoned office. Garden was lovely though, for photos.

Toddlerteaplease · 03/01/2024 21:38

@BloodyAdultDC how bizarre would it be if it was us two again!

Toddlerteaplease · 03/01/2024 21:39

@UnimaginableWindBird that explains it. The fireplace was beautiful though!

Toddlerteaplease · 22/01/2024 05:38

@Melw96 are you sorted for witnesses?

Melw96 · 22/01/2024 13:24

I'm all sorted now, thank you so much to everyone who has replied and very kindly offered! Hope that I can do the same for someone else one day 💐🥰

@PinkMimosa
Well, we are still married but my husband had a stroke last May so things are very different now.
I did have a live thread on here at the time but have name changed since then. My Unicorn wellies were much admired!
