Disney Song for First Dance?

Hi all,

We're booking the band for the wedding and they've asked for a song for the first dance. My DP is not keen on any of my suggestions but has suggested a very well known Disney Song (along the lines of Beauty and the Beast / Let it Go). Is this cringe or not? I told my bridesmaids and they told me you just wouldn't pick it for the first dance. Especially because it's usually sung in an accent 😬

So yay or nay?

Well, who would people think was the Beauty and who the Beast of the couple???

Surfsenior · 23/01/2023 15:30

I wouldn’t overthink it. Choose a song you like, everyone just wants to see you dancing and all loved up. Weddings are a bit cringe full stop!

Smartiepants79 · 23/01/2023 15:33

Depends a bit on the song? What accent??
First dance songs are supposed to have some meaning. Does this song have strong memories for you as a couple??
At the end of the day though it only matters if the rep of you love it and are comfortable dancing to it.
If it’s an unusual choice though be prepared to style it out! If you think it’s weird then so will everyone else!

I was at a wedding, where the first dance was played out to 'A Whole New World' from Aladdin.

As long as it's not 'Hi Ho!'

Chooba · 23/01/2023 16:05

My money is on 'Kiss the Girl' from Little Mermaid 😬

DerangedViper · 23/01/2023 16:06

Please, please, please have "the wonderful thing about Tiggers"

TinselAngel · 23/01/2023 16:08

King of the Swingers from the Jungle Book?

RaspberryCaner · 23/01/2023 16:09

Do you want a first dance?
If you're not bothered just have a first song. Get ushers to ush everyone onto the dancefloor and pick a really lively one to kick the night off, that's what we did. Tell the band you're doing that. Just because they are asking for your first dance song doesn't mean you have to have one!

PuppaDontPreach · 23/01/2023 16:13

Have whatever you want. I'd much rather see a couple dance to something that is meaningful to them than something they've picked for being acceptable.

If the singer has an accent in the film I'd either play the soundtrack version or ask the band to do their own interpretation. Don't ask your singer to do a Jamaican accent.

😂😂😂

loving these suggestions. Go for it. I think you should use A Spoonful of Sugar from Mary Poppins.

snowlolo · 23/01/2023 16:14

You don't have to have a first dance at all if you don't want to. We didn't. I had an amazing time on my wedding day and the best advice I can give, across the board, is you should do what you like and not worry what people might think.

It's your day and most people don't actually really care about these things, they just want to have a good party and celebrate you as a couple.

Usergjdksndjsn · 23/01/2023 16:17

Ive been to several weddings where they’ve done a first dance to a Disney song
so obviously you aren’t the only ones who will like it
personally, as a huge Disney lover yeah, I think it’s super cringe
but then 99% of all the other weddings I’ve been to have an Ed Sheeran song, which is also cringe
so who cares what other people think if you like it

SNWannabe · 23/01/2023 16:18

Naff. Sorry

user2391 · 23/01/2023 16:20

Can you feel the love tonight. Lion king

AllOfThemWitches · 23/01/2023 16:20

I would go for 'poor unfortunate souls'

FirstFallopians · 23/01/2023 16:23

Could be naff, could be a nice twist.

The original recording of the song, played by a DJ- Naff

Acoustic version reworked by a decent band with their own spin on it- could be quite cool, people working out where they knew the lyrics from!

Espritdescalier · 23/01/2023 16:25

I went to a wedding where they had Beauty and the Beast as the first dance. It was naff as hell but the bride and groom loved it and totally embraced the Disney theme throughout. I must admit I can be a bit of a snob about these things but I was totally won over by the end of the night because they were just so full of joy about it all.

So yes, very naff but if it makes you happy then embrace it! It's more important to have fun than to worry about what people think.

OvaryActions · 23/01/2023 16:25

I'm thinking 'kiss the girl' as it's the only romantic Disney song I can think of sung with an accent.
I think if you both like it then go for it and enjoy your wedding day the way you like, but if you're thinking it's cringey and only going along with you husband to be then try and think of something else!

Should add to this that I am planning to have Galloping Home (the theme from Black Beauty) at my funeral.

toastofthetown · 23/01/2023 16:29

I’d choose a song based on what you and your partner want, not your friends. Most other people won’t remember or care about anyone else’s first dance so might as well make the decision solely for the people who do.

Unless the song is Les Poissons, which I would remember (and would love).

A friend of mine had a whole Disney themed wedding. It was fun and suited her to a tee.

Kiss the Girl could definitely be done well with a good singer, strings and a piano!

gogohmm · 23/01/2023 16:39

If it's a jazz band, I'm the king of the swingers would be greatGrin

But definitely avoid any post 1980's Disney, too cringey
