Is this wedding dress too fussy?

I fell in love with this gorgeous Eliza Jane Howell dress after stumbling on it in a bridal boutique website, even though it isn't the style I had in mind. It's a heavily discounted sample. The consultant showed it me on video and the photos don't do it justice. The underskirt is covered in sequins that create a subtle shimmer effect, and I love that the skirt is full without having a train. My one concern is the ruffles around the shoulders and collar. Are they too much? Am I going to look like I'm in a costume? I wear a lot of Victoriana/Edwardiana inspired clothes, so the style is quite 'me', but as I'd gone into the shop picturing myself in a plain ankle length gown with a simple juliet or bandeau veil it feels like a bit of a stretch! Honest opinions please!

It's beautiful. I'd only worry about it being a bit scratchy for a full day's wear.

XiCi · 05/12/2021 09:57

It's beautiful. I love it.

I love it! I think their styling is fussy - the gloves, the hair, the headband. But the dress isn’t too much.

LawnFever · 05/12/2021 09:59

It’s beautiful, the skirt is stunning but I’m not convinced about the ruffled sleeves… I think without them it would be much nicer, that’s what makes it fussy imo.

Laquila · 05/12/2021 09:59

It's beautiful! Can you wear a bra with it though?!

Tbh, whilst there's quite a lot going on, it's all pretty subtle. What season are you getting married in? Would you still wear a plain veil?

Exactly!

Actually yes you’re right - without all of that the sleeves wouldn’t be too much, I think the dress on its own is enough.
Floralnomad · 05/12/2021 10:01

Can you have it made without the ruffled sleeve part as it would be lovely and unfussy then .

Exhausteddog · 05/12/2021 10:05

I think its lovely, and not overly fussy. Agree the gloves and headband add to that effect. And they're in a very ornate room for background- all of which changes the impression.

OhMyCrump · 05/12/2021 10:07

I like it, but would be better without the ruffles around the sleeves. Can they be removed?
I also think that style will look best on a slim, more flat chested person, it would not look good on me, I am too dumpy!

Coldenoughforyou · 05/12/2021 10:07

I think it’s beautiful but it would be too fussy for my taste, the front more than the back. It sounds like it would suit you though and I would think it would be stunning on someone else.

CasparsWineBar · 05/12/2021 10:09

Gorgeous dress- not my own style at all but it is beautiful.

Agree that it's all the accessories and styling that makes it 'fussy' and over styled imho.

Etinoxaurus · 05/12/2021 10:09

It's beautiful. And particulalrly if you're into Victoriana, perfect.

TulipsGarden · 05/12/2021 10:10

I think it's lovely, especially if it fits with your usual style. Will probably look best on someone slim with a small chest though - those ruffles would be a bit much with a boobs as well.

GiveYourHeadAWobble · 05/12/2021 10:10

I love it!

Dozer · 05/12/2021 10:10

Have you tried it on?

Not a fan of the ruffles but think much depends on how it looks on you and what you think and feel about it.

LindyLou2020 · 05/12/2021 10:12

I think it's beautiful. BUT............if I was going to buy it and wear it I would cut the frills off the neck and shoulders! They spoil it and are superfluous imo Flowers

BabbleBee · 05/12/2021 10:12

It’s beautiful but I couldn’t cope with the ruffles around my neck all day!

CurlsLDN · 05/12/2021 10:12

I think it's beautiful and on someone slender with a small bust would look stunning.

The styling of the photo definitely makes it look OTT when in reality it's a beautiful gown with a simple and elegant silhouette and the stand out feature of the shoulder ruffles, which is the feature that makes it so interesting and memorable.

Get it, and if the ruffles don't suit you they would be easy enough for a seamstress to remove, however given your taste for that style of clothes I suspect they will be perfect for you.

ohwerehalfwaythere · 05/12/2021 10:12

I wore EJH for my wedding last month and it was absolutely stunning. If you can, strongly recommend you try and get to one of their regular sample sales at their London store. Follow their IG for dates or email. I had the best day and got my £2k dress for £1k but some pieces were only a few hundred

Negligee · 05/12/2021 10:13

I like it, but think you would need to go very plain/minimal with accessories — for instance, no veil, even that bandeau is too cluttered-looking — to make it work. Also, as a pp said, I would only wear it if small-chested (no bra possible?) and with nice upper arms — as I think the ruffles highlight the arms.

I’d either wear nothing at all on my head with it, or a simple diamante hair clip or comb.

twosticksandanapple · 05/12/2021 10:13

I like it. I think though you need to be tall, slim and with small breasts to pull it off. Also to wear your hair up and keep accessories to a minimum.

MushroomHunter · 05/12/2021 10:18

Oh what a beautiful choice, It’s stunning! I think it depends on your height and shape as to weather you would suit it or not but if you wear that style then that shouldn’t be an issue.

threecupsofteaminimum · 05/12/2021 10:22

It's stunningly beautiful, go with your heart on your wedding day. Thanks

booksandballet · 05/12/2021 10:22

It looked much nicer onscreen in the bridal shop so I suspect you're right and it's the fancy background and all the accessories that make it look overkill. If I buy it I wouldn't have a veil, just a simple headband. I'd dial down the jewellery too and wear stud earrings. I'm fairly tall and skinny with smallish boobs, so I think the style would work for me. I'm excited to try it on!
