wedding readings- help!

we’re getting married in three months and the time has come to decide on our vows and readings,.
Im really having trouble with picking out some readings though. some of our closest friends and family have got married recently and had lovely readings with lovely sentiment, which if they’d not used we’d have chosen ourself! but any readings
I can find on pinterest just, fall short somehow. two I really lived and can’t have are: SIL had an exert from captain corellis mandarin,
and I read “the art of marriage” for one of my best friends recently, so we’d going along the lines of that sentiment. we’ve been together 10
years and have a child
so the young rush of love stuff is out, realism and a bit of humour in the mix would be welcome, please can anybody suggest your favourite readings or exerts? thanks x

The Future by Emma Salmon

Whisky2014 · 05/01/2018 21:55

Oh that Emma salmon was is good! But who would read it as it's like the bride should read directly to the groom...

Mrmoonmrmoon · 05/01/2018 22:05

We had the art of marriage and also ‘on your wedding day’. ‘ Apache marriage blessing’was our reserve choice

FusionChefGeoff · 05/01/2018 22:11

Oh the places you'll go by Dr Seuss

blueskyinmarch · 05/01/2018 22:14

I am reading this from Philip Pullman's The Amber Spyglass as my nieces wedding later this year. The site has other passages from favourite books which might be worth looking at?

Scaffolding by Seamus Heaney

Masons, when they start upon a building,
Are careful to test out the scaffolding;

Make sure that planks won’t slip at busy points,
Secure all ladders, tighten bolted joints.

And yet all this comes down when the job’s done
Showing off walls of sure and solid stone.

So if, my dear, there sometimes seem to be
Old bridges breaking between you and me

Never fear. We may let the scaffolds fall
Confident that we have built our wall.

For one of our readings we had Perfect by Bob Marley, however we tweaked it slightly as really it's supposed to be read to a woman. Really we used it as we didn't want anything too sentimental (we'd been together much longer than you have Wink and it kind of summed us up quite well!
This was how it ended up:

Johns not perfect. Janet you aren’t either, and the two of you will never be perfect.
But if he can make you laugh at least once, causes you to think twice, and if he admits to being human and making mistakes, hold onto him and give him the most you can.
She isn’t going to quote poetry, she’s not thinking about you every moment, but she has given you a part of her that she knows you could break- her heart.
Don’t hurt her, don’t change her, and don’t expect for more than she can give.
Don’t analyze. Smile when he makes you happy, yell when he makes you mad, and miss him when he’s not there.
Because perfect doesn’t exist, but there’s always the one that is perfect for you.

(I've changed our names obviously)

Another vote for the velveteen rabbit heard that at a wedding recently and thought it was lovely.

We had Union by Robert Fulham. Not particularly gushy but straight talking and real. I liked that it summed up that despite being together a long time it was a huge change and a new level of commitment

dorislessingscat · 06/01/2018 08:51

I had to read the words to 'love is all around' by wet wet wet Grin

Tigger83 · 06/01/2018 08:55

Following you guys are giving me inspiration too!

TheRattleBag · 06/01/2018 09:12

What sort of venue are you having? Church? Register office? Other civil venue? Some readings might suit certain locations better if you see what I mean.....

daydream86 · 06/01/2018 09:17

Rattlebag, a non-religious civil ceremony in a 17c building (think period house museum) but it’s going to be quite a laid-back wedding

Einstein's quote on relativity:

Gravitation cannot be held responsible for people falling in love. How on earth can you explain in terms of chemistry and physics so important a biological phenomenon as first love? Put your hand on a stove for a minute and it seems like an hour. Sit with that special girl for an hour and it seems like a minute. That's relativity.

Whisky2014 · 06/01/2018 12:46

I like that jess

The only thing is these seem to be quite short...like won't take long To read at all...is that normal?

I like "the union" and the "on your wedding day" poem too.

daydream86 · 06/01/2018 13:31

haha flipping heck Doris! you’ve inspired me! I’m going to text my bestie and ask her to do that for my reading for a
laugh!

I feel it in my fingers
I feel it in my toes
The love that's all around me
And so the feeling grows
It's written on the wind
It's everywhere I go
So if you really love me
Come on and let it show
You know I love you, I always will
My mind's made up by the way that I feel
There's no beginning, there'll be no end
'Cause on my love you can depend
I see your face before me
As I lay on my bed
I cannot get to thinking
Of all the things you said
You gave your promise to me and I gave mine to you
I need someone beside me in everything I do
You know I love you, I always will
My mind's made up by the way that I feel
There's no beginning, there'll be no end
'Cause on my love you can depend
I got to keep it moving
It's written in the wind
Oh everywhere I go
So if you really love me, love me
Come on and let it show
Come on and let it show
Come on and let it
Come on and let it,
Come on and let it show
Come on and let it,
Come on and let it,
Come on and let it show,
Come on and let it show,
Come on and let it show

We are having 3 readings.
What is a soulmate
Marriage isn't beautiful
As long as forever

Can't wait to be married in few weeks!!

JessYouMe · 06/01/2018 15:09

Whisky yes true it is short, we had 3 in total and that was probably the shortest but none that were really long. We aimed for a short ceremony though overall.
