Very quick post , but good chance of aurora tonight, perhaps as far South as Norfolk. Good clear skies for many too!

Thanks for this- I'm in the Highlands and the rain looks like it's clearing up so you never know! Wouldn't have known to look without your post!! Xx

RandomMess · 30/10/2021 17:19

I am excited at the prospect but may stop raining!

DrCoconut · 30/10/2021 17:23

Will have to look even though it's unlikely here.

GrandmasCat · 30/10/2021 17:34

I wonder what would be the best time to see it. Had the Aurora Watch App before and it was great but I cannot get it to work anymore.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/10/2021 18:03

I think they've stopped using the app.

It works for me but is shown by no significant activity.

It seems to be sitting over northern Russia

I've reinstalled my app. Nothing yet, but I'm too South anyway.

@WaltzingBetty I wonder if Lancs Uni is still updating it, in older times you would get the alarm a good few hours before the lights were visible.

NightmareLoon · 30/10/2021 20:56

I've been watching this page, which has the NOAA tracker and a link to it. (The NOAA site went down earlier but the tracker kept updating here ) www.aurorahunter.com/northern-lights-tonight.html

Looks like nothing yet, I'm going to set an alarm in the wee hours to check again.

I got an alarm a few days ago (maybe a week?) nothing tonight but then it says there's no Aurora tonight. App says was updated today. It's on the screenshot

Yeah that seems to align with the Aurora watch app
TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 30/10/2021 21:05

Thanks for this, I have downloaded the app!

GrandmasCat · 31/10/2021 00:00

Ok, it is now playing, visible from Scotland and increasing intensity 🤞

specialsauce · 31/10/2021 00:03

I'm very jealous. I'm on the south coast so no lovely sky lights round here. Enjoy you lucky ones!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/10/2021 08:23

Did anyone get to see it last night? I fear it didn't come very far south.

Standstheclockattentothree · 31/10/2021 09:12

Not here in Perthshire, the Aurora watch app only ever went yellow (visible in the extreme North of Scotland).

notimagain · 31/10/2021 10:08

I’ve just seen a report that what I guess you’d describe as a normal display being visible from somewhere north of Aberdeen middle of last night but the data shows it was not caused by the products of the “outburst” ( CME) that some of the Media have been on about…the products of that either haven’t arrived yet, or did so without producing a display that was on the scale some where promising.

There’s just a slim residual chance things might be active again tonight.

Problem with forecasting aurora is that the astronomers can see the phenomenon on the Sun that eject these clouds of charged particles, but they aren’t yet able to predict with any great accuracy was state the clouds will be by the time they get to the Earth - so can’t forecast what the end effect will be to any great degree of accuracy…

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/11/2021 22:06

Red alert on aurorawatch! if you have clear skies, look north now.

It was too cloudy here to see anythingConfused

Nowthereistwo · 04/11/2021 03:50

I might have been seeing things as I'm in Hertfordshire, but I was driving home at 6 tonight and I could see these changing colours in the sky and thought it was fireworks but it didn't follow the pattern of fireworks iykwim. Aurora makes sense of the colour and patterns.
