Concerned about the storm at the weekend (east coast please pay attention)

It is early days yet but I am concerned that there is the potential for severe coastal flooding along the east coast from the storm that looks to move in boxing day evening and into Saturday. I really hope I am wrong and I really hope that the models change. There is some inconsistency between the models and so the track and depth of the storm is not pinned down at present. These will both have an impact on the final outcome.

If I lived along vulnerable coastal areas then I would at this point be ensuring that I know where my flood defences are because it will be difficult to sort out over Christmas itself. Those who know me from other threads know that I don't say these things lightly. I don't believe in scaremongering but I do believe in preparation. If Christmas weren't in between now and then I would hold off for another day or two until I was more certain.

Gales or severe gales look likely for some.

Remember that I am an amateur though. met office warnings environment agency flood warnings are the places to check closer to the time. I do apologise hugely if I am worrying anyone and it turns out not to be necessary but as I said I hope I'm wrong and look foolish for sounding the alarm over what is at present is a potential severe event.

We have heavy rain forecast through Friday night. If only that could be snow but we are probably too South, I'm in East Kent.

Ho-hum, 'tis only the start of winter, plenty more snowportunity.

GloriaSmud · 25/12/2014 11:17

Yay, we're under the warnings for snow! At the moment though, I don't think the metoffice is very sure whether we'll get any as they have us down for mostly sleet/rain.

GloriaSmud · 25/12/2014 11:20

Some thoughts on the Boxing Day/weekend weather here from netweather.

Perihelion · 25/12/2014 12:47

LumpySpacedPrincess · 25/12/2014 13:12

I want to reach up and pull the snow warning down onto us Xmas Grin

marne2 · 25/12/2014 13:18

Me too a Lumpy, I am secretly hoping they have got it wrong and we will all get snow instead of rain.

WowOoo · 25/12/2014 15:19

Thank you OYBBK. Merry Christmas to you!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/12/2014 18:00

Merry Christmas :) will be really interesting to seem where gets snow tomorrow. Hilly parts of Wales, some of northern England, the midlands perhaps at times and I still think the chilterns. It depends on how heavy the precipitation is, the air it falls through and obviously the temperature. I expect some people will have rather a surprise.

BBC and Met Office weather apps have us down for heavy rain Friday and Saturday here in East Anglia. Spoilsports. Hmm

PseudoBadger · 25/12/2014 19:07

We are under the warning in NI, but we aren't on high ground. Any idea if we'll get any snow Kitten? Merry Christmas!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/12/2014 19:30

Pseudo, it's going to sound like a cop out but I just don't know. 850hpa temps look borderline as does air temp but if the rain is heavy and falls through dry air as it evaporates it can cool the air down allowing snow to fall. ( evaporative cooling)
Often snow in the UK hangs on a knife edge with a temp swing of one or two degrees making all the difference. It makes it very difficult for councils. Put grit down too early and it gets washed away then it turns to snow and everyone blames the councils for the ensuing chaos.

I really hope the Midlands doesn't get any snow. The one day I need to be somewhere. I have been asked to go over and take a friend's dog for a walk while they are out for the day. Sad

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/12/2014 19:43

I think some parts will sparkling. It's looks quite likely. I couldn't pin point where. But I'm guessing higher risk between Leicester and Leeds.

I've opened a new thread Boxing Day snow

May be too far north for this band of snow, though perhaps it will come to NE Scotland.

Today has been -5 warmed to -3 and back now to -5.

Sparklingbrook · 25/12/2014 19:44

Thanks OYBBK, I have gone over to the thread to request none for us. Smile

PestoStormissimos · 25/12/2014 19:47

As long as gatwick isn't snowed in on Saturday morning

Sparklingbrook · 25/12/2014 20:14

Ooh where are you off to Pesto?

PestoStormissimos · 25/12/2014 20:16

Skiing in France with DD2 & best friend & her family - cannot wait! For the past 19 years all I've done is dry ski slopes & the odd bit of skiing here when it snows. It has been a very long wait for someone as keen as me Xmas Grin

Sparklingbrook · 25/12/2014 20:20

Good luck Pesto hope you have a fab time, and lots of snow but not til you are there. Wink

PestoStormissimos · 25/12/2014 20:28

Thank you Sparkling

I feel very lucky that DD2 is just as keen as I am. She went skiing on snow for the first time at February 1/2 term and ever since we have continued to go dry skiing. But she said to me she couldn't wait to go skiing properly on snow with me one day, and then amazingly my best friend booked to go (but with her family who don't ski) and asked if we would like to join her (her DH & DD's booked in lessons for the week) and she needed someone to ski with!!!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 26/12/2014 22:58

Not the nicest flight home I've ever had. I think the pilots definition of light winds and mine disagree somewhat. Has really picked up in the last couple of hours so glad the flight wasn't later.
