If a 90mph wind is on the way DON'T PUT YOUR WHEELIE BIN OUT!

Half my neighbours have already lined the pavements with wheelie bins and bags of recycling, as it is our bin day tomorrow. The bins will bowl down the road and smash into cars and the recycling will end up as a storm of litter.

I am surprised that amongst the endless doom laden chatter on the BBC and other radio stations there aren't some very specific common sense tips.

Have you thought of standing in your street with a megaphone?
I'm always amused by the lack of joined-up thinking by adults.

You might end up keeping your rubbish and your neighbours' rubbish for a month indeed all over the street indeed.

Bugger, it's our recycling tomorrow too.

I will put ours out early tomorrow morning if the worst of the wind has subsided. Or just leave it, it isn't full. The re-cycling can wait a week.

Put it out early tomorrow, block the wheels with bricks to stop it rolling and hope for the best?
Organise someone to either put it back when it's empty, or lie it down otherwise you might not see it again.

Its our bin day tomorrow and im just going to put the bin in the entrance to our front path, in the gateway in the morning first thing and move it out when safe.

And then keep an eye out for said binmen so i can retrieve my bin again when they've emptied it.

Someone on another thread has bungeed their bin to a post!

Call the council and ask if they are even going to be collecting the bins at the usual time this week. They may have changed it due to the forecast.

The worst of the winds are between 2am and 6am. Best to put them out in the morning. It's going to be a right old mess out there. Take care!

On the same theme I wish some of the people up our road would take their bins back in ,the bin man came on Friday and there's still a few bins and food bins hanging around at the end of driveways ,even more likely to blow way as they're empty .

I got DS1 to wedge ours in a sheltered spot in the garden. The recycling one is wedged in by the garden waste and normal waste because they are heavier. I'm just hoping they don't all tip over tonight, that would normally be DH's job, but he's not here.

I live in London and every house on my road has three wheelie bins outside their house at all times. As we're in terraced houses we have nowhere else to put them... Any suggestions?

That sounds difficult, Janey. Hopefully your street points the wrong way and will be at right angles to the wind and more sheltered?

I do wonder how bad it will be in sheltered inner city streets.

We are in London, but on a hill and if the wind goes in the direction shown on the BBC website, it will whistle directly up our road.

Don't tie it to your drainpipe though! Our bin is out because it's bin day tomorrow but it's full of heavy rubbish so should be OK.

My bin is permanently out. There's nowhere else for it to be...

How do you stop them blowing away?
I live on a fairly steep slope, with a number of London commuters. So when the bins are free-range in strong winds, we herd them back for those that don't get home til late.
