Hurricane sandy

Looking potentially very serious indeed for the eastern seaboard of the US, perhaps including NYC if some models are correct. The storm will probably be extra tropical but nevertheless if it interacts with a trough modelled off the east coast that could bring down arctic air then the result could be approaching catastrophic, with utterly torrential rain, severe blizzards, hurricane force winds and severe storm surges all being possible.

I think people will be getting very worried about this. Mon tues weds are the days to be watching. Lets hope the storm turns east away from the us coast.

Good morning from the Southern Tier of NY. We almost totally escaped Sandy - no flooding like last year - the main problem is power outages and the roads are clear because the police picked up all the branches in the night. Sadly a young boy in PA nearby was killed by a branch falling on him outside his home. Awful.

Don't know if this has been mentioned but apparently the construction pit at the WTC is full of seawater.

OhYouBigBadBeast · 30/10/2012 13:19

Morning Phyllis :)
Hadn't heard that about the WTC. Awfully sad about the boy.

Talkinpeace, try not to worry. Perhaps their phones are out of battery?

so are quite a few underground car parks
the pictures of the PATH at Hoboken are quite something too.

Do you know if cellphones work on Manhattan yet?
Not going to try the landline yet (had that nail chewing after 9/11)

Yogagirl17 · 30/10/2012 13:22

Will try and find out about the cell phone thing. I'll post if i hear anything.

Yogagirl17 · 30/10/2012 13:24

Just had FB replies from a bunch of friends saying cellphone networks in NYC seem to be working but of course the phones themselves may be out of charge.

OhYouBigBadBeast · 30/10/2012 13:24

Do you twitter talkin? You could ask on there. I don't Tis a bit unfathomable to me.

it also depends where in NYC - BBC reporters seem to forget that Manhattan goes north of Central Park!
He lives near the 14th street substation that blew up ....

lisad123 · 30/10/2012 13:30

Friends are safe although destruction everywhere Sad they will be home ASAP once airports are open

mathanxiety · 30/10/2012 14:05

DD1 enjoying her day off in DC and still has power. Her BF's grandparents in NJ are near a river and by last night it had reached their back door so hopefully they have upped sticks.

fledtoscotland · 30/10/2012 14:24

Anyone any idea when will start to get flights in and out of JFK

TalkinPeace2 · 30/10/2012 14:27

not for a few days yet - they have to get the bridges, tunnels and subways off Long Island sorted first !

mathanxiety · 30/10/2012 14:43

Planes are grounded all over the US. Passengers are camped in airports. Hotels are packed. Getting everything moving again will be a priority.

cheapandchic · 30/10/2012 14:47

Friends and family are safe, but trees have destroyed a friends house and floods have destroyed cars and basements. (both in ny and nj)

Now that I know people are ok....I cant help but worry about the election. My husbands absentee ballot has not arrived, the offices to call and send another one are closed. How will he get one sent and sent back in time? I cant help but thinking there are other people in this situation.

And with the race being so close this year....ummm every vote matters!

TalkinPeace2 · 30/10/2012 14:49

cheap - if you are in the US he'll have to turn up and vote on the day.
My UK one arrived in early september - I sent it back weeks ago

Yogagirl17 · 30/10/2012 14:51

cheap I received and returned my absentee ballot by email.

OhYouBigBadBeast · 30/10/2012 15:13

Very nice to hear all the positive reports of people being ok, if rather shaken and shocked.

I think LaGuardia is still closed. JFK seems to be technically open and indeed one or two flights seem to be arriving
live arrivals

cheapandchic · 30/10/2012 15:15

no we are in uk. this is why I am concerned.

cheapandchic · 30/10/2012 15:17

yoga- not sure if it varies state to state....but i am pretty sure we cannot vote by email

TalkinPeace2 · 30/10/2012 15:18

cheap - there is no way it will get there now
the guidance that came out with mine (NYC, funnily enough) said to have it back by mid October

OhYouBigBadBeast · 30/10/2012 15:25

FAA link to the status of the areas airports. I seem to be wrong about JFK, except their arrivals board contradicts the closed statement. Confusing.

The sun's out in NYC now and cellphones are working, according to my cousin in Queens - aunts and uncles in DUMBO, Battery Park, Jersey and uptown all have power, all say everything is fine in the city itself, it's just a bit wet and untidy apparently.

Yogagirl17 · 30/10/2012 15:26

cheap you may be right - what state?
