Looking potentially very serious indeed for the eastern seaboard of the US, perhaps including NYC if some models are correct. The storm will probably be extra tropical but nevertheless if it interacts with a trough modelled off the east coast that could bring down arctic air then the result could be approaching catastrophic, with utterly torrential rain, severe blizzards, hurricane force winds and severe storm surges all being possible.

I think people will be getting very worried about this. Mon tues weds are the days to be watching. Lets hope the storm turns east away from the us coast.

it is right at the top of the text feed

blackcurrants · 29/10/2012 23:04

The storm has arrived, it's loud now and we've had some brief powercuts. DH and I just rummaged for torches, led lamps.and candles (less good.because of climbing toddler) and have turned the house heat up and the fridge and freezer temps down! As long as we don't. loose power for more than.12 hours we.shouldn't have to Chuck everything in the freezer.
Our dog is clingy and nervous, our son totally happy and oblivious! Hope.everyone else is ok.

WHAT???

m0nkeynuts · 29/10/2012 23:09

According to BBC site now:
1907: New York fire officials have told the BBC that the building collapse reported on its Twitter feed was in fact "partial facade damage" to the building, and not a full collapse. Nobody was injured in the incident.

OhYouBigBadBeast · 29/10/2012 23:10

Bbc24 talk such rubbish, I wish they were actually keeping up with events. Retiring to bed with iPad.

Thank goodness for that. It's weird they keep talking about eye of the storm, but I always thought the eye, while the centre, is the calmest part. Surely then the edge of storm is most dangerous?

OhYouBigBadBeast · 29/10/2012 23:10

X-post, I didn't mean about the building collapse, I meant about where and when the worst weather will be.

Fox News staying four story apartment has caught fire and collapsed Sad

VivaLeBeaver · 29/10/2012 23:13

Flight radar website looks odd with no planes on the eastern seaboard.

stretch · 29/10/2012 23:13

Good god, just watched the weather channel and the reporter in Stonington Shock what the hell was he doing?? Surely you can't stay upright in that? Not sure what time it was.

OhYouBigBadBeast · 29/10/2012 23:14

Exactly Lisad- not the outer edges but closer in around the eye wall. Also the rain bands tend to be areas of more severe weather.

Pictures on news show apartment with front missing and roof in, but doesn't look too bad Confused

SoggyMoggy · 29/10/2012 23:17

Stretch, did you notice his hat? It was still on. I was kind of stunned.

stretch · 29/10/2012 23:22

It froze half way through, so I hope he's ok. God knows how his hat stayed on. He could barely stand {confused]

MoreBeta · 29/10/2012 23:23

Con Ed just cut power to parts of Lower Manhatten so people are now in darkness - hopefully none in a lift.

lisad123 · 29/10/2012 23:25

Why can I see people on the webcam, out on beach filming with mobile!! Madness

LineRunner · 29/10/2012 23:25

Viva, I just looked on Flight Radar with DS. Not a sight we thought we'd ever see - a flightless eastern seaboard.

OhYouBigBadBeast · 29/10/2012 23:31

The Battery is now at 11.9ft. I believe that is over a ft above the record in 1960.

Which webacam, lisa123? I can't seem to get any of them to load.

BuntyPenfold · 29/10/2012 23:31

The Times Square webcams show people wandering about as usual. Two little girls just gave a display of Irish dancing for the webcam.

winnybella · 29/10/2012 23:32

BBC say the record was 11.2 in 1821.

OhYouBigBadBeast · 29/10/2012 23:32

Apparently all time record was 11.2ft in 1821 according to bbc.

Okay, it's official, this must be serious ... They closed the WaWas.

lisad123 · 29/10/2012 23:35

here but cuts in and out. Police came and moved them on.

lighthousekeeping · 29/10/2012 23:35

My friends are there for the weekend. Can't get intouch with them. The last I heard they were been evacuated from their hotel. Can't see that much on the ordinary news channels.
