There might be a good show tonight and tomorrow night!

To save peeking out between rain/snow clouds. Sign up for alerts :)

Labradorlover · 24/01/2012 19:36

Wanted to go out Sunday night but DH away and DD too tired to be chucked in a car.
I miss living out of town, with proper darkness.
Saw an amazing aurora in Nov 2003 in Central Scotland. Was really high in the sky and dancing all over the place. ( have been signed up for alerts for some time! )
Think there will be too much cloud tonight.

Labradorlover · 24/01/2012 20:42

Don't know how to link, but Space weather .com is good too. Can check the aurora oval ( click on Europe ) and the Planentary K index.
Aurora's moving South.......go away cloud Angry

GloriaSmud · 25/01/2012 12:11

Is this the site, Labrador? Looks like there was quite a show in Finland! They're also going to have a bit about the NL on the Jeremy Vine show on Radio 2 today.

That's the one Gloria, thanks. ( must learn to do links and things! )

Another possible geomagnetic storm: From Spaceweather.com

INCOMING CME: Analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab say a coronal mass ejection (CME) will hit Earth's magnetic field on Feb. 26th at 13:30 UT (+/- 7 hr). The impact could spark a G2-class geomagnetic storm.

(Note, a G2 storm often causes aurora to a latitude of around 55 degrees - that's as far south as Newcastle Upon Tyne, maybe further south if we are lucky... and if it is night when it arrives. The forecast time of arrival is 13.30 - lunch time)

Donki · 25/02/2012 17:12

bump

Donki · 25/02/2012 20:09

Unfortunately the weather forecast is for cloud.

Donki · 25/02/2012 21:27

:(

GloriaSmud · 26/02/2012 06:56

Only just seen your post ~ not looking good for us. I'd love to see the Northern Lights but think here in the E Midlands, I'm too far south even if the conditions are good!

OP posts:
Donki · 26/02/2012 08:21

spaceweather.com now have an animation to show the likely impact of the CME. It is quite pretty (if you like that sort of thing)

GloriaSmud · 26/02/2012 08:39

Oooh nice ~ it is pretty! And 'tis interesting as well for seeing how it might affect other planets/satellites

Donki · 26/02/2012 14:39

GS - do you like Flanders and Swann by any chance (sorry for off-topic Q)

GloriaSmud · 26/02/2012 20:59

Donki ~ Yes, I do like a bit of Flanders and Swann. Didn't think anyone would 'get' that it was from one of their songs!

OP posts:
Donki · 26/02/2012 21:11

I really love their stuff...
Flander's witty repartee was masterful.

Donki · 26/02/2012 21:11

No sign of the CME though, I think it must have missed :(

GloriaSmud · 27/02/2012 19:42

They did indeed write some wonderful songs.

Yes, looks like we've missed out again. Some really nice pictures on spaceweather.

OP posts:
Donki · 27/02/2012 20:56

Hey! If you live in the north of Scotland and it is clear GO AND LOOK OUTSIDE - according to Spaceweather.com here the auroral oval is active, and has come south to you!

Donki · 27/02/2012 21:06

It even looks like there are some clear skies in NE Scotland at the moment!

Donki · 27/02/2012 21:12

I'll bump this up for a last time before I get on with work.

Donki · 07/03/2012 23:06

The spaceweather forecast is looking interesting - 45% chance of a severe geomagnetic storm at middle latitudes in the next 24 hours.

That might mean aurora before dawn.... :)

here is the link to spaceweather here

here is the link for the aurora forecast.

Labradorlover · 07/03/2012 23:14

CME from X5 class flare should be reaching us about 6am tomorrow ( Thurs ) morning.....+/- 7 hours. It's one of the strongest for about 5 years, so possibility for aurora before dawn or tomorrow night.....
Crossing fingers and hoping I have more luck than I've had with the snow Smile

Labradorlover · 07/03/2012 23:27

solarham.com another good site.....still not learnt to link....

Donki · 10/03/2012 19:48

More interesting space weather incoming over the next few days - it is definitely worth keeping an eye on the websites linkied to further up this thread. :)

ohyouBadBadkitten · 10/03/2012 19:52
