more warnings

The winds could be particularly nasty to the east of the Pennines and poor old Blackpool seems to have another good bash at the wind. Gernerally quite galeish across the UK.
silly old weather.

Oh joy, more wet and wind!
After yesterday's weather (which wasn't actually that wet and windy here), we discovered this morning a couple of bits of mortar/cement from the edge of our roof have fallen down into the gutter and the alleyway between us and next door. The front of our house sure does get the weather; baked by the hot summer sun and then lashed by the wind and rain! I guess we were lucky not to have anyone underneath as some of the 'lumps' are about the size of an adult's fist!
another job that needs to be sorted!

mankyscotslass · 04/01/2012 17:24

It's pretty yuck here now, wet and windy, though not as bad as what mum had yesterday.

DH is just living in hope that DS1 football training is cancelled. Grin

Gloria we lost some mortar yesterday too.

OhyouBadBadkitten · 04/01/2012 18:19

we've noticed mortar is escaping from our roof too - just one the one side. I was wondering if the severe cold of last winter cracked it, then the weather recently has been the final straw for it.

Fence is now held up with a system of ropes and bricks!

It's really wild here now (Durham).
I am absolutely petrified of the wind and am turning the TV up to try to drown out the noise. Hope it settles down soon, had zero sleep last night, thought the roof was going to blow off!

OhyouBadBadkitten · 04/01/2012 20:04

oh crumbs, you poor thing. You are going to be exhausted!

OP posts:
siblingrivalry · 04/01/2012 20:28

Already am Smile
Doesn't help that next doors 'For Sale' sign just came flying past our front door!

Feel like such a wuss Blush
Keep frantically checking the Met Office website, hoping it will be good news.

SarahStratton · 04/01/2012 20:44

Lincolnshire reporting in.

It is absolutely horrific here. Far worse than yesterday, the whole house is shaking and I've had to wrestle the wheelie bins into the garage as even the half full ones were making a break for freedom.

I don't like this one little bit. :(

OhyouBadBadkitten · 04/01/2012 21:26

that sounds nasty. I'm sure if yesterdays storm hadnt happened (and the precceding ones) this would have had much more publicity (mind you I looked at this yesterday and didnt think it would be nearly so bad and I guess the met office thought the same as they didnt put out the advance warnings that this warrants.

OP posts:
siblingrivalry · 04/01/2012 21:29

We have just lost roof tiles-sounds much worse than the last couple of storms.
The dds are petrified, the sound of the slates sliding then falling has really freaked them out Sad

I can't believe this only has an yellow warning, surely warrants an amber?

Any ideas on when the winds will ease, please?

OhyouBadBadkitten · 04/01/2012 21:41

Those east of the Pennines are getting it extra bad because you are getting lee waves - where the wind over the hills is deflected upwards until it hits an inversion (like a cap) the winds are reflected back down which gives the extra strong winds as they descend . (if you are in a bit where the wind is being deflected up the weather is unusually calm in your spot)

I guess those east of the Welsh mountains and higher ground in the West country may also having some of these amplified winds even though the met office hasnt issued warnings for those areas. Those of us out of that effect will just have ordinary gales.

I'm afraid it's going to be a bad night for those of you east of the Pennines

It has been really rainy and windy here tonight, but nothing out of the ordinary so far.

Have to admit though, I opened the back door to let the cat out, he stood on the step for a minute, turned and yowled at me in disgust and walked back into the kitchen.

Have the wheelie bins lined up agains the garage door just in case.

siblingrivalry · 04/01/2012 21:54

Oh hell Sad
Thanks for the update OYBBK.

GloriaSmud · 04/01/2012 22:00

Manky ~ sensible cat!

Sibling ~ the sound of slates sliding down the roof are horrible. We had a ridge tile go 12 years ago and it was in the middle of a very stormy night. I still remember, not just the sound of the tile sliding down the roof but the sleepless night that followed, wondering whether any other tiles were going to go.
Hope you manage to get some sleep and don't suffer any further damage.

OhyouBadBadkitten · 04/01/2012 22:04

sorry sibling :(
I've been looking for an end to all of this and although I can't see any big storms in the models coming, I cant really offer too much in the way of promises either - the jet stream is remaining exceptionally active and until it settles down the weather wont settle either.

Getting quite noisy down here - the chimney keeps rumbling but nothing worrying.

ok, am logging off for the evening. I hope you manage some sleep.

HarrietJones · 04/01/2012 22:06

M6 Cumbria was v wild today.

siblingrivalry · 04/01/2012 22:08

Thanks, OYBBK . Goodnight.

Gloria- that's exactly what I'm doing-listening for more coming off and worrying.
People in Scotland had a terrible time and a few slates don't matter compared to the damage many others sustained, but I can't help feeling petrified Sad

GentleOtter · 04/01/2012 22:15

Thank you OYBBK.

Hellish gusts here in the Perthshire hills. The pressure built up inside the house and doors keep flying open then banging shut.

I hope you all stay safe.

siblingrivalry · 04/01/2012 22:37

We now have rain peeing in too Sad
Bloody hell, going to be a long night.

whomovedmychocolate · 04/01/2012 22:38

Really harsh winds down here in Oxford. The builders decided today was the day they would put the new Velux in Hmm

The new one arrives tomorrow - it blew out as they were putting it in. Silly buggers.

whomovedmychocolate · 04/01/2012 22:40

I have a question actually, at school pick up time, I could see the rain, it was white and looked like snow but it was too hot for snow, so what the hell was it. It was soft not like hail but quite large formed flakes. Confused

SarahStratton · 04/01/2012 23:03

My fence has gone. And the garage roof is making a hellish banging noise. I can hear the trees at the back groaning.

:(

Hassled · 04/01/2012 23:06

I'm in the East and really quite freaked out tonight. It feels worse than the last few days and I can't imagine fence between us and mad neighbours will last.

whomoved - we had that weird rain thing yesterday. It wasn't rain, it wasn't sleet, it wasn't snow. Was just very odd. Like warm snow, but not much of it.

Ponders · 04/01/2012 23:08

west of the pennines here (between them & Blackpool) but still pretty fierce & some weird noises

SarahStratton · 04/01/2012 23:11

I saw that rain stuff too, it was like someone had fluffed up a big fat raindrop. Most odd.
