watching.

I need to buy snow boots so the weather had better hold back for a few weeks.

OhYouBadBadkitten · 06/11/2011 21:10

not too bad so far.... talking about the thc (which we really dont understand fully at the moment as to how it affects weather or how to predict it) and the jet stream (though the blocking as shown was in the wrong place for what happened last winter)
Moving far too quickly on to specifics about clouds now - which isnt really relevant to long term prediction.

Did I hear that right? the national grid have issued an alert that supply might not meet demand? I wonder why - they i'm sure have very strict criteria before issuing an alert.

I must have misheard.

I can't imagine that we'll get snow in the south for some time yet. It's still too warm.

BelleDameSansMerci · 06/11/2011 21:37

So, um, is it going to bastard snow then Sad

BelleDameSansMerci · 06/11/2011 21:38

I'm so worried, I forgot the ?

I bloody hate bloody bastard snow

Pan · 06/11/2011 21:39

Glossop's a funny place. LAst year we had snow/ice on the ground for about 2 months, from early December ( remember keeping an appt. on a snow-filled 4th Dec) toward end of Jan. No repsite, yet in Manchester 12 miles away the snow/ice came and went most days.

OhYouBadBadkitten · 06/11/2011 21:40

I've not seen anything to show snow for the south in the models that go up to the 22nd Nov - indeed nothing for lowland areas across england/wales. Of course that may change!

This year I bike-train-bike to work. Going to be a bit of a cold challenge....

smackapacca · 06/11/2011 21:44

Right - i'm panicking. I work in the community, do alot of mileage each day. Work said they're getting us snow grips for our shoes, but I want to be proper prepared.

I feel a list coming on!

OhYouBadBadkitten · 06/11/2011 21:46

cor! you'll need your thermals for that (and sometimes a sledge)

OP posts:
Pan · 06/11/2011 21:49

yeah...I know. I have a £60 voucher for "Snow and Rock" climbing shop. Thermal tights are £33. Guess what's on my shopping list.Smile

MayDayChild · 06/11/2011 21:49

Bring it on! I commute to London by train. They don't work in snow so I don't go to work!
Sorry, not helpful I know

good mention of the solar minimum and our weather - theres been some good research recently that shows a link.

Pan · 06/11/2011 21:53

OhYouBadBadkitten · 06/11/2011 21:54

I am well prepared for snow. I have warned my boss if it snows I will not be at work. I have a stock pile of hot chocolate and hobnobs.

This sounds like a great idea but like most people I may well be putting my life and the lives of others at risk by driving to work on ice and snow covered roads.

The stress is probably more life threatening than driving on ice.

OhYouBadBadkitten · 06/11/2011 21:55

MDC - dd is already planning her snow days - her school has a lot of bussed in kids and they close pretty easily. She reckons she can do her school work while I'm in work then we can go sledging when I get back. Grin

Brilliant summary.
All in all, for a pop-sci program not too bad.

OP posts:
Pan · 06/11/2011 22:01

Sooo the answer is....."well, we just don't know." Grin

BiscuitNibbler · 06/11/2011 22:03

Reason for it not to snow - I've just bought myself some snowboots and thermal socks.

Reason for it to snow - have had to chuck out a lot of my cupboard staples due to flour bugs taking over (thankfully all gone now) but haven't had a chance to restock.

So it could go either way round here. Grin

OhYouBadBadkitten · 06/11/2011 22:06

absolutely Pan, what I've been saying for several weeks now.
