The metoffice are a bit worried about this weather front that's coming in from the west. Looking at the TV forecasts yesterday, the impression I got was that either the band of rain they're forecasting will start off as heavy snow followed by rain or that it will be rain straight away, which will fall on to frozen ground with the result being icy roads.

sensible words.

looks like the GFS model is going to be more accurate for tomorrow at least with the main snow risk for most not until tomorrow evening.

Hulababy · 26/12/2010 22:21

Am flying from Manchester to Malta at 3:30pm tomorrow so have fingers crossed for reasonable weather! Travelling from Sheffield to get to the airport.

AitchTwoOh · 26/12/2010 22:21

actually kitten, our boiler switched itself off overnight so it was possibly just as well that we weren't away... everyone's pipes seem to be bursting at the moment.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 26/12/2010 22:27

funny how things work out!
we came back to find water in our bath with the plug out. Not quite sure how we didnt notice that it hadnt drain after my shower but it was very clear that the outlet had frozen. We had to siphon the water and then pour very hot water down the plug hole.

Hopefully you should be ok hula :)

midnightexpress · 26/12/2010 22:36

Oh that happened to me once when we were away. Unfortunately I lived in an old mansion block in London at the time and the pipe froze below our flat, so all the upstairs neighbour's dirty bath water filled up our bath to the veeeeeery top - erk.

No snow here yet in W Scotland tonight. Aitch, that black ice is a bugger. I'd never seen it like we get it here until I moved to Scotland. That W Scotland drizzle that freezes so the pavements are like skating rinks. There was one NYE a few years ago like that. Glasgow, Hogmanany, smooth ice over every pavement. It's like a perfect storm.

AitchTwoOh · 26/12/2010 22:40

hahaHA! i remember that hogmanay! me and dh walked out of a party waving goodbye and skited right on our arses. borrowed sports socks from the host and hostess and wore them over our shoes all the way home, passing genuinely injured and utterly pished people on the way. crawled up my hill on hands and knees...

i've got fake yaktrax now, highly recommend.

midnightexpress · 26/12/2010 22:45

I've just been given some lurvely new snow boots by DP, which is a cast-iron guarantee of a thaw.

winterpetunia · 27/12/2010 08:26

We have a thaw going on here (Leicester). It was bitterly cold yesterday afternoon (-3 at 4pm) but it's warmed up during the night and there's the sound of snow melting this morning.

Snowing here, again :(

Habbibu · 27/12/2010 09:34

We're heading down from Inverness tomorrow, back to Fife, I had a beak at invent and it looks like we'll be ok, but could you give me a nod if it looks like changing, Kitten?

Aitch - was that 95/96, when the streets of Glasgow were thick wwith plumbers' vans?

ajandjjmum · 27/12/2010 09:43

Thaw going on here in the West Mids - very little snow left, much to the disappointment of my nephew who is coming up from Berkshire today, hoping to see some 'real snow'.

Sad for him, but not really hoping for more.

mankyscotslass · 27/12/2010 09:46

About half our lying snow melted overnight!

DanceInTheDark · 27/12/2010 10:00

I got woken by rain in the early hours. I was delighted for a bit because that means it's warmer. 2 degrees Grin

AitchTwoOh · 27/12/2010 11:17

no, habs, it was maybe about 2002, the most bizarre thing. just one flash of ice everywhere, at midnight on Hogmanay. HAPPY NEW YEAAAAAAARGH!

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 27/12/2010 11:24

3.6C here - thaw pretty quick! Hard to imagine snow in this. Off to see the models (bit belatedly, but it is the Christmas hols)

NoahAndTheWhale · 27/12/2010 11:27

Warmer here in York but there is snow falling now. Big clumps butvi don't think doing much really

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 27/12/2010 11:32

updated warnings looks like a rain event for many/most in the south tonight. Cold rain - temps just above zero, so could just about lead to some surprises.

Further north? A mix - maybe some proper snow in SE Scotland for a bit tomorrow (sorry Habbibu, stuggling to have any accuracy here!) and maybe just about Yorkshire and the NE too.

Funny how these things go, a couple of degrees here or there makes a huge huge difference to a forecast. In the summer we wouldn't even notice if a forecast were 2C out.

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 27/12/2010 11:32

funny x-posts noah! Grin

MrsThisIsTheCadillacOfNailguns · 27/12/2010 11:47

Thawing and snowing in Leicestershire.I've been watching dd1 ride for an hour and am frozen.Hopefully my washing machine will thaw out too,so I can use it properly again. It has been frozen for a month now.

NoahAndTheWhale · 27/12/2010 11:49

Snow calming down now :) Tiny bit on the cars. I think duckyfuzz is county Durham and said she was having snow too,

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 27/12/2010 12:34

MrsCadillac - you must be desperate for it by now!

MrsThisIsTheCadillacOfNailguns · 27/12/2010 14:34

OYSSK,I can't believe how hard it is without one.Luckily dh and I managed to rig up a kind of Heath Robinson type thing and it is currently filling via a hose pipe attached to a garden hose and the outside tap.I'm hoping that the pump and drain have defrosted so that I don't have to do it manually though-I can't seem to do it without getting water everywhere.Ah well, more snow forecast tonight.Grin

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 27/12/2010 19:29

oh well done with your jury-rigging!

confined warnings to yorkshire and NE.

laughalot · 27/12/2010 19:35

hmmmm do we think nowhere else will get it then ? Grin
