Friday's snow

Thankfully less for those who have been plagued this week :) Much drier at least to start but with a weather system moving in from the west later. I think the SE should stay dry.

western Scotland gets a good swathe come through. Later, a mix of rain sleet and snow comes through Wales and Cornwall. Take great care where rain falls onto sub zero surfaces!
This band moves across the country, so the Midlands, Yorkshire etc will see this.

today's warnings

I have never ever seen so much snow. It's thigh deep and sparkly. I haven't been out since Saturday and I've had enough. All the neighbours have been out all morning with snow shovels and spades digging. I am knackered. Our lane is totally blocked and if we don't clear it no one is getting out.

We are out of potatoes, rice and milk.

bilblio · 03/12/2010 12:37

-6 and freezing fog in Stockport this morning. Brighter and blue skies in Tameside now though. Still flipping cold though!

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 03/12/2010 13:05

twentiethcentury - i don't think so, i think it may come in too warm for it to be snowy for you. However i could be very wrong on that, so don't base important decisions on it!

OYSSK - thank you :) Forecasts never really cover this area very well, we seem to be stuck with either the forecast for the coast or for the other side of the moor, neither of which are very helpful!

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 03/12/2010 13:15

If you are in the SE then be aware that Sat/Sun brings a real flooding risk for those with large snow depths with models showing up to 40mm of rain in that region. Heavy rain+rapid thaw=flooding.

OhYou thanks for the potatoes. Wine we have plenty. Guess who got her priorities right Wink.

I've just checked it's -8 at 2pm in bright sunshine. There are tiny ice crystals sparkling in the sun like dust mites. The weight of snow has bent some of the gutters which are hung with icicles.

I have a pretty well stocked freezer but with 2 teenage boys we get through a lot of potatoes which I normally buy by the 25k sack from the farm. Have found some horrid frozen chips at the bottom of the freezer.

DanceInTheDark · 03/12/2010 14:27

my weather station has gone bonkers with the cold. I adjusted the barometer so the pressure matched the pressure according to the met office for my area and ever since then it has flitted between -11 and -1.

Either i broke it or it is somewhere in between that in Stockport lol!

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 03/12/2010 14:40

warnings everywhere

snowedin you have diamond dust very cool!!

Dance - your poor weather station!

It was -11 here last night. Me and DS3 off today with similar sounding sore throat, temp and cough...

We're Midlands/NW ish so expecting rain (?) and then re-freeze. Which is the worst bit. DH supposed to go to Manchester tomorrow evening but if too icy I may ban him Grin

So, the high pressure and cold coming back next week?

snowedinthesticks · 03/12/2010 15:16

Diamond dust! Yes that's what it is. I've never heard of it but it's truly beautiful.
I took photos but they didn't capture it.

christmaseve · 03/12/2010 15:23

Heavy snow in South Cumbria, schools shut at lunch time, I left work at 2pm, it was -2.

nymphadora · 03/12/2010 15:31

We are further south than eve and ours have shut but further on again just has rain

mankyscotslass · 03/12/2010 16:05

Cold and grey here, sky is very snowy, though nothing yet.

Not as cold as this morning.

usualsuspect · 03/12/2010 16:08

No more snow here, but -5 at the minute ..the pavements are bloody lethal ...my legs ache from walking in a strange way to try and keep upright

mankyscotslass · 03/12/2010 16:16

I feel quite festive now (although that could be the wine I had with lunch) Blush

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 03/12/2010 16:21

-6 here on the south coast this morning.

I braved a run by the seafront and there was steam coming off the seaXmas Shock

It was really lovely. Just wish the snow would bog off. It's turning into ice and the paths are a bit slippy in places.

Hoping for a big thaw tommorrowXmas Smile

laughalot · 03/12/2010 16:36

oyssk do you think there could be further bad weather in the north midlands nottingham way ? Thanks

saorachd · 03/12/2010 16:43

i have been reliably informed that it has been rather nice and a little bit warm on Skye and some of the other islands. Enough to have brought on a thaw.

domesticsluttery · 03/12/2010 17:21

-12 here last night.

White stuff falling from the sky for the 8th day in a row.

Fed up.

mankyscotslass · 03/12/2010 17:21

Snow soup!!!! Shock

DS (8) just came downstairs and said he does not want to go to the cub fair because he thinks he will freeze. Grin

Still waiting in the snow we are supposed to get this afternoon/evening!

StealthPolarBear · 03/12/2010 17:25

Do we know how long this snowy spell is going to last?

mankyscotslass · 03/12/2010 17:26

on not in Hmm Blush

duckyfuzz · 03/12/2010 17:27

snowing again here now, but a lovely crisp day before that, although we did have freezing fog first thing and I clocked -14 on my way to work

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 03/12/2010 17:29

laughalot - you could end up with rain or it could be snow or freezing rain. still no idea which it will be but I'm guessing snow!

-6.8C here now - with the precipitation expected between 9pm and midnight I have no idea what will happen!?! Waiting with baited breath. Certainly either snow or rain freezing on contact with surfaces.
