Hiya fellow Mums!I really want to hear your experiences from Mums who weaned before 4 months please or for fellow Mums who are thinking of weaning before 4 months!

I don't want to hear from Mums who want to stick their 2 pence worth in on not doing it as its wrong and blah blah blah.... as EVERY BABY IS DIFFERENT!

My DD is coming up 12 weeks old but i started weaning her at 10 1/2 weeks old and She's doing really well and enjoys her food.

I really need some recipes to go on with,so if you got any please let me know!

I was a bit miffed when i went to my local mums and baby group and a mum told me off like a child for weaning DD before 4-6 months!I did exp[lain that i had done my research and had spoken to a few pediatric specialists and they ok'd it.....The look on her face when the other Mums told her they weaned at 10 1/2 months too...i have to say i did feel better that i wasn't the only one in the "Before-4-month-weaning-boat"!

The NHS gave me a recipe book, including a recipe for baby rice (mix with milk) and mashed carrots (cook carrots, mash). They are speaking to a diverse audience and the message and language used needs to be simple.

I don't know if that's always helpful though.

Ds was weaned at 16 weeks although bearing in mind he was a prem he was actually weaned at 9 weeks corrected! Done on paediatrican's advice. We just did the usual baby rice, pear puree to start with.

For nutrition and growth all a baby to the age of 6 months need is milk.

Someone (cant remember who now) put it in the context of- when we go on a diet we cut down on dairy and up the fruit and veg.

Early weaning for a baby will be the same surely? Adding in fruit and veg will fill their tummies but offer less calorie wise, which is all they need at such a young age.

But when you wean between 4-6 months, you are not reducing the amount of milk, you are giving additional fruit, veg and/or baby rice.

MrsBadger · 19/12/2009 13:36

but babies have a very limited stomach capacity

anythign you give them that isn;t milk fills space that should be filled with milk (iyswim)

Okay, so my 4 month old was consuming over 35 oz of milk a day and still hungry between feeds, but his stomach couldn't hold any more liquid. He was offered fruit/veg puree and rice in between milk feeds (about 2 tablespoons - not the equivalent of another bottle of 8oz!) and it sat in his tummy and satisfied his hunger. Nutritionally, he could not have needed +35oz of milk, surely?

MrsBadger · 19/12/2009 14:04

no idea, sorry - dd was ebf so am no good re measuring milk in oz

nappyaddict · 20/12/2009 03:17

Well DS was on 64oz of milk a day from 12 weeks and I weaned him at 6 months. HV never seemed to think it was a problem even though somehow he stopped gaining weight some weeks even drinking that amount! She said she would only be concerned if he ever lost weight (which he only did when he was ill)

He wasn't a big baby when he was born (7lb 4.5 oz) but even as young as 7 weeks I remember him taking 35-45 oz of milk a day.

confuddledDOTcom · 21/12/2009 11:49

Why couldn't he have needed 35oz+? Maybe he needed more milk than that even, only he knows what he needs and if he needes more than that giving him something to sit in his stomach isn't satisfying his hunger, it's filling his belly. Hunger isn't just about an empty stomach, it's needing something you don't have. Ever wondered why you can't eat anymore food until the desert comes out? Because that's a different shaped hole, not because your stomach was full up before.

Using the formula that the hospital used to feed my babies 35oz is what a 15lb baby needs in a day - how big was your son at 4 months?
