Gecko has eaten chilli, curry, chinese noodles, fuit of lotsof kkinds, veg of all sorts,
she feeds herself, lasagne, spag bol, tatties and veg, tons of things
I am very happy with her range of food she has tried but I'm completely panicking about grapes
dd2 loves as do I and I reckon gecko qwould too btu I've never let her have one

can I?
she is 13 months, she rarely gags on anything she eats now

do I peel them or quarter them or just ha;ve them or is she too young
Is it the shape thast the choking hazard? I.e very round or the skin being weird?

I would quater them and then give them to her.

It's the size and the fact that they are soft that make them a choking hazerd; they are the perfect size to get stuck in the windpipe and because they are soft they can totally occlude the windpipe. Once stuck, very hard to get out.

katz · 03/03/2008 12:01

cut them up and she should be fine, mine had them at this age just cut up.

SoupDragon · 03/03/2008 12:02

They're fine. Just make sure you've paid for them first

Kewcumber · 03/03/2008 12:02

its the roundness and the size - I couldn't be arsed cutting them up - I just used to bit them into a mulched shape (and eat half)!

Rhubarb · 03/03/2008 12:05

Has she got teeth?

If she's got teeth then by all means give her a grape!

TrinityRhino · 03/03/2008 12:06

thanks guys
I just quarted a couple (taking it slow ) and she wolfed them down and pointed for more
I've done a few more and she seems fine
thanks everyone

Don't forget that they come out looking much the same as when they went in...

CountessDracula · 03/03/2008 12:07

Sorry is this a real gecko or a pet name for a child?

I have odd visions of a rhino feeding grapes to a pet gecko

TrinityRhino · 03/03/2008 12:08

hi rhubarb
she has 8 teeth now
but I'm still RELLY paranoid
how are you doing??
we ever going to see you again?

CountessDracula · 03/03/2008 12:10

sorry TR!

Nemoandthefishes · 03/03/2008 12:20

TR glad she enjoyed them. I give dd2 them all the time and just cut them in half..well cut in half a vat load and all 3 help themselves.

AitchTwoOh · 03/03/2008 14:12

it's the roundness and the texture of the skin that's the issue, that's why you're supposed to half grapes until kids are 5.

Tutter · 03/03/2008 14:14

i halve them

advice is to quarter them

went on a paeds emergency first aid course - yikes anyone wjo heard the tales of choking would cut their kids grapes up too

WaynettaSlob · 03/03/2008 14:18

If halving cut them lengthways.......
I'd quarter them though....

phlossie · 03/03/2008 15:43

I bite them in half, too, kewcumber...

TiddlerTiddler · 03/03/2008 17:50

TR - I am as paranoid as you are. I am STILL halving mine for DS1 and he is 3!

Wallace · 03/03/2008 18:04

I've been a bit slack halving them for ds2 (19 motnhs) until the other day he was helping me unpack the shopping and I hadn't realised he had found the grapes. Luckily I turned round and there he was eyes bulging, choking, completely silently! I whacked him on the back and he was violently sick all over my shooping!

So now I make sure I cut them in half lengthways.

AitchTwoOh · 03/03/2008 19:42

oh god, wallace, how AWFUL. thank goodness he was okay.

Wallace · 03/03/2008 21:56

Luckily it happened so quickly I didn't have time to panic.

And this is a boy who hardly ever gagged when he started weaning and can cope with literally () any food thrown at him. I think the problem was he loves grapes so much that he couldn't believe his luck to find a whole bunch!

AitchTwoOh · 03/03/2008 22:00

even if dd gets a whole grape (like if we're out and i don't want to look like a precious twat) i try to impress upon her the importance of bursting it before it goes into her mouth. my heart does stop when i see kids throwing grapes into their wee gobs.
