How do you get sufficient calories into dairy-free baby meals?

My ds (8 months) is intolerant to cows'-milk proteins, so he (and I) are dairy-free. All the weaning books etc. seem to encourage liberal use of butter, cheese, full fat milk/formula. I am using rice milk but how do I get the calories up?

ALso, am I right in thinking I should be avoiding wheat for one who has some allergies? Until when? What does one use in place of toast (everyone's favourite finger-food).

He only really started eating solids last week, so still just on rice, vegetables and fruit for now..

Yes I am still bfing DS. We had a horrible time at first as he would scream while feeding. We tried everything, reflux meds, cranial osteopathy etc. I tried him on formula at 6 months and it was like a scene from the exorcist he projectile vomited everywhere!!

At least at that point we got allergy tested and everything got so much better and I stopped eating eggs and dairy and he stopped screaming.

It is so much harder weaning an allergic child, but it is OK. it is hard not to get stressed about it someimes.

We have the odd slip up, i.e. i gave him free from pitta not realising it had egg in it!! And he has unfortunately started reacting to tomato as well.

Bread and cheese are the only things that I have found hard to substitue for.

Trufree pasta is pretty much no different to normal pasta, and i make lovely butternut squash risotto, but he mainly eats meat potatoes and veg!!

meat and chicken (with the skin on) will add the calories.

wow - this is really helpful, thanks.

Yes, he can't have egg, sesame, dairy or soya.

Haven't given him any meat or other protein yet as has literally only been eating for about a week now. Not sure how quickly to introduce those things, given that he's 8 months, but only just getting used to eating.

Haven't been told to up the calories, but don't want him losing weight. I guess with all the bfing he should be ok..
