How do you get sufficient calories into dairy-free baby meals?

My ds (8 months) is intolerant to cows'-milk proteins, so he (and I) are dairy-free. All the weaning books etc. seem to encourage liberal use of butter, cheese, full fat milk/formula. I am using rice milk but how do I get the calories up?

ALso, am I right in thinking I should be avoiding wheat for one who has some allergies? Until when? What does one use in place of toast (everyone's favourite finger-food).

He only really started eating solids last week, so still just on rice, vegetables and fruit for now..

I use dairy free pure spread in place of butter and olive oil to cook with. Advocado is high calorie.

On the advice of the dietician I also use cheezly and toffuti cheese substitute to get more calories and calcium in DS' diet.

Not sure about avoiding wheat.

olive oil (or any oil), coconut milk/cream, avocado, goose fat...

no clue on the wheat front, but there are good wheat-free breads and bread mixes about. or rice cakes?

I would be avoiding nut products like nut oils and butters and sesame if your LO is atopic.

The gluten free pitta bread is quite good,although most have egg in.

Ds eats tons of oatcakes, which are wheat free, but not necessarily gluten free. Also rice cakes.

Potato wedges are good as finger food and you could make your own gluten free potato scones.

Half pound (225g) boiled and mashed potatoes
2.5oz (65g) flour (gluten free)
3 tablespoons melted butter (pure)
Half teaspoon salt

Method:
Mash the potatoes while they are still warm and add the butter and salt. Add in enough flour to make it a pliable dough but without making it too dry. The type of potato will affect this. Turn out onto a floured surface and roll until about quarter of an inch thick. Cut into six inch circles and then into quarters. Prick all over with a fork and cook in a heavy pan which has been lightly greased. Cook each side for about three minutes or until golden brown.

I don't know if you have had scottish potato scones, but they are really flat not like normal scones.

My Ds can't have egg either .

I don't think coconut counts as a nut so it's fine for atopic people.

Momma, what a gorgeous family you have! Must have your hands full with twins though. I find it hard with one allergic DS.

Have you been told to worry about his calories ? ds1 was allergic to eggs and dairy - and we had to avoid wheat for a time as well and avoided nuts just in case, but I never worried about his calorie intake. I fed him until he was 2 a reckoned he got his full fat that way. The rest was just normal food - meat, veg, rice etc with some soya replacements for milk and yoghurt - the cheese stuff was too foul to contemplate. He is now a fine healthy 8 year old who out grew his allergies about 4.

Mayola mayonnaise substitute is good too. It's not that great eaten on it's own, but good for stuff like tuna mayo and I made a great seafood sauce and coronation chicken with it for DS' birthday party.

We use full-fat goats milk, all my DC have had this, DS1 from 20mo and the other two from when they started weaning and as their main milk drink when i stopped bf (12mo & 17mo). My lot are intolerant to the proteins in cows milk - though we reckon not lactose. not taking chances though
We have not cut out wheat entirely, and although I think DS1 does have a 'limit' to how much he can have of stuff like cereals and brown bread, they all have some foods with wheat in. I concede to getting "rice pasta" and avoid overloading them with it.
