i am thinking of getting a new highchair (one without a tray) cos ds seems to be really offended by his.

only problem is we are doing BLW and i just put the food on his tray. no point using a bowl or plate cos he just picks it up in one swoop and watches it all fall to the floor. so if you have a highchair with no tray what do you do? just put the food directly onto the table?

I don't have a tripp trapp, but I do know that you can buy trays for them on e-bay.

I have got a tripp trapp (and am a BLWer) and I brought a suction mat from blooming marvelous to go on the table. If that is dirty though and she is a plate throwing mode, I just dump it directly on the table and she is more than happy with that. The good thing about the mat is that is harder to lean and swipe off that than the shiny table top, iyswim!

I don't use reins but the same thing happened to a friend of mine. I think it was because she hadn't adjusted the footplate so he managed to launch himself out. You have to keep up with the adjustments I think.

Oh, really, that's a bit of a worry.

I used a trip trapp with reins and fed my daughter with a weaning spoon (but only ever as much as she wanted, which wasn't much) until she was able to sit up at table and feed herself from a Baby Bjorn plate and spoon set (or her fingers).

problem is i've bought those bowls with suckers on the bottom and he still can pull it off. no way i'd give him an adult plate - unless for some reason i wanted them all smashed! i could put it on a place mat but i reckon he'd do the same with that as he does with his bowls/plates.

I've got a thick spongy table protector type thing (good description i know) which i use as a tablecloth, its wipable and machine washable so i just put his food on there.

we've got a tripp trapp - def use the reins! . they can go in the wash on 40 degrees.

bought a lovely vinyl tablecloth which we use at her end of the table, with clips to keep it on. then just plonk the food directly onto it and clean it all up at the end. plates/bowls would just get chewed (minus the contents). and a bit of plastic from the market to go under the highchair which is cleaned - so that food can be recycled

not my favourite jobs at the end of meals/day but she eats more this way.

oh and have stopped using the seat cushion - became a health hazard. just use the back cushion and wash frequently

meant to say the seat cushion is a real pain to get off - have to dismantle the chair. back one is easier to remove.

We have a tripp trapp which DS has used since 6 months (he's now almost 14 months).

We did BLW, usually with plates/bowls and a gripper mat thing. We did use reins for a while when he was in a wriggly mood, but don't anymore. I agree you have to keep up with the adjustments though.

We've ditched the cushions altogether (ds2 now almost 9 months, so doesn't need them to prop him up like he did). Have reins ready, and judging from today's performance, need to liberate them from the cupboard!

We have a wipable tablecloth and his food goes straight onto it. From there a lot of it goes straight onto the floor, but he does eat too! He's only interested in turning plates upside down, then using them like a frisbee - but that may be the novelty factor of hardly ever getting his sticky mitts on one!

dcb where did you get the vinyl thing with clips from? sounds like thats what i need.

do those gripper mats work or can they pull them off? he always manages it with those sucker bowls.

i think its because the tray makes him feel enclosed in. he used my cousins booster seat high chair the other day with no tray and loved it but i would prefer for him to have a proper highchair.

My dd does pull the mat thing off sometimes so quite honestly, we often resort to the table. It is better than the bowls though, they are useless. Like the idea of the vinyl tablecloth though so I might try that.

And malory, we started off with spoons when she was 6 months. She point blank refused to eat off one and has been feeding herself ever since. Apart from yogurt and that she tolerates to a point.

Our Tripp Trapps pulls right up the the table. We didn't do BLW but DD loved finger foods from very early and preferred to feed herself. This was never a problem - just put it straight onto the clean table, with a splash mat underneath table.

Everything straight off the table here - even the (occasional dollop of tomato ketchup!

And dcb you can take the seat cushion off without dismantaling the chair - the curved front bar is designed to bend and be pulled out without removing anything else. It can be a bit stiff, but it works.
