i am thinking of getting a new highchair (one without a tray) cos ds seems to be really offended by his.

only problem is we are doing BLW and i just put the food on his tray. no point using a bowl or plate cos he just picks it up in one swoop and watches it all fall to the floor. so if you have a highchair with no tray what do you do? just put the food directly onto the table?

Are you sure, AllBuggiedOut? We've always needed the allan key for ours. It's the 2007 style - so may be different?

nappyaddict · 13/05/2007 20:55

hulababy and allbuggiedout - did you bother with a tablecloth or literally just straight off the table?

also what did you do when out? a lot of restuarants we have been to have similar style highchairs and i always worry about the table not being clean cos i haven't done it myself iykwim.

I have a tripp trapp and jsut push DS right up against the table (in fact conveniently our table, from Habitat, is exactly the right height for the tripp trapp rail to slide underneath without any gap at all. Works even better than a tray as he has more room to push the food around. We have another high chair with a tray and I never use it.

Whoooosh · 13/05/2007 21:11

Am with MT on this one

Is it just me or do those trip traps look blardy uncomfortable?

Cool but uncomfortable-and if you use a cushion it must be forever in the washing machine?

Hulababy · 13/05/2007 21:15

We don't use a cushion on ours. Did originally and it just become too much of a fuss to keep clean. So no cushion here. DD seems to always find it compfortable. I have used it at the computer before and find it comfortable too.

MissGolightly · 13/05/2007 21:16

We use the back cushion (which has been washed once in 6 months and looks fine) but not the seat cushion, which does tend to get grubby quickly. I figure DS's bottom is well-padded!

Hulababy · 13/05/2007 21:16

nappyaddicts - straight off the table. We don't have a table cloth.

Bagpuss30 · 13/05/2007 21:25

We use a laminated cotton table cloth (you can buy by the metre in John Lewis) and ds2 just sits right up at the table with us. We didn't BLW but ds did like finger foods from early on. I also bought 2 cusion sets and rotate them in the wash - don't find them too much of a faff to change over provided you keep the allen key handy, it takes minutes.

nappyaddict · 13/05/2007 21:26

i am a bit scared about trying the eating off the table. last time we did it in a restuarant he went straight for my plate and wine glass and tipped the lot all over me how do you keep your los from grabbing everyone elses stuff off the table?

Yurtgirl · 13/05/2007 21:29

ummm thread hijack - whats BLW?

AitchTwoOh · 13/05/2007 21:30

perfect for yurt life...

Bagpuss30 · 13/05/2007 21:33

nappyaddict, you don't

In my experience, ds2 has learnt over time what he can have and not have, although you do have to have a bit of patience.

GColdtimer · 13/05/2007 22:33

Just seen your question nappy, yes that is what we have and it has been good.

AllBuggiedOut · 14/05/2007 20:13

NappyAddict - No tablecloth, too much opportunity for havoc as the DSs would have pulled it, lifted it, hidden under it etc etc... So literally straight on to the table. It's a pretty nasty Ikea plastic-coated affair so easy to wipe down.

And ours is older than that, PurpleTurtle, but it would be a pretty crap design feature to change as it's a nightmare to get off if you can't... So I guess it's the same?

nappyaddict · 14/05/2007 23:13

and do you do the same when eating out? thats the bit that worries me as i work in a restaurant and the same cloth can be used all day to wipe tables.

OP posts:
AllBuggiedOut · 14/05/2007 23:28

Depends what they're eating. I would put something like sandwiches directly on the table in front of DS if the table looked ok and I gave it a quick wipe with a babywipe. Otherwise I just need to keep a very close eye on the plate/bowl because it will, at some point, get lifted/turned/tossed. If he's really playing up, I move the highchair far enough from the table so he can't reach, and hand over pieces of food as necessary.

nappyaddict · 14/05/2007 23:30

oh i have another question. what about at home with things like pasta in sauce, shepherds pie, lasagne etc - surely that doesn't go straight onto the table?

OP posts:
AitchTwoOh · 14/05/2007 23:34

eeeuw, you're all so gross. get an ikea cheapie one with a tray, fgs!

AllBuggiedOut · 14/05/2007 23:34

Yes, pieces of pasta in sauce get put on the table in front of DS2 a few at a time. I find it so much easier than keeping hold of the bowl. Although I do let him have yoghurt from a bowl! And I stay very close by ready to catch it...

AllBuggiedOut · 14/05/2007 23:35

Why table more gross than tray???

nappyaddict · 14/05/2007 23:35

ha ha eating yoghurt with their hands is such a larvly site isn't it!

OP posts:
AllBuggiedOut · 14/05/2007 23:36

Even more fun when his 3 1/2 year old brother decides that "If he can do it, why can't I?"

nappyaddict · 14/05/2007 23:37

i duno i just can't imagine putting shepherds pie etc on the table where evreyone else is eating.

OP posts:
AllBuggiedOut · 14/05/2007 23:41

No wouldn't do it with shepherd's pie. That falls into the yoghurt category. Pasta fine though. Thinking about it, it's probably all to do with whether he eats it with his fingers or not. If yes, prob ok for table. If not, plate/bowl but often I have to hold on to it. And definitely NO TABLE CLOTH!!!
