What has your 6mo had today?

On the back of my thread of general cluelessness at 2nd time weaning it would really help to know what other people's babies are having at the same stage.

Yesterday mine chomped on a bit of my toast in the morning and had a few spoonfuls of veggie purée which he catapulted at his head at tea time.

We start next week, but I saw my NCT group this week and the range was: sticks of cooked veg once a day (not much eaten); baby rice once or twice a day (some with an Ella's pouch); to three meals a day (rice, pouches and a homemade mush dinner); and then just one baby left on only BM (mine). I feel a bit bad for making him wait until six months, but I'm clearly a bit of a rule-follower.

The range seemed incredible, and all babies seemed happy enough. I'd be interested to see other people's too.

I'm a total rule follower too! Hence him having his very first naps in his room this week too! The freedom!!!

He's 26 weeks, big and chunky and sitting up well so I figure it's time to give it a go. Smile Done well on just bm till this point though.

mine is 26 weeks this week. Have been bending the rules as she has been sitting well for about 4 weeks and well able to bring a spoon to her mouth. started a couple of weeks ago with veggies. She really isn't into being spoon fed so finger foods mainly. Anyway! This morning some slices of nectarine which she gummed and chucked around and I tried to spoon feed her some ready brek. She wrestled me for the spoon and smeared it in her hair Hmm its all just fun and games at the minute and although bits are going in I don't think she has figured out that this new toy can stop her feeling hungry. She still has an insatiable desire to bf.

I'm weaning 6 month old dc3 Ds now. So far today he has had a rice cake.

Things that have gone done well so far are avocado, doughsticks and he sent a bit nuts and snatched my vegan Calone off me in a cafe and screamed whenever I tried to get it back!

Is slow progress though as the highchairs is at MIL house still.

yep rice cakes are a success here too. Sucked and gummed to mush. Biggest hit by far are cucumber sticks and cantaloupe. both quite firm and good to chew. Maybe it feels nice on her gums?

I'm going to try him with a rice cake later on. He seems frustrated and loses his temper trying to get finger food sufficiently in his mouth and would rather sit there opening his mouth for me to spoon something in!

Shredded wheat for breakfast (partly spoon fed and partly letting him play with loaded spoons) and a couple of dried prunes and apricots.

For lunch he had some cheese sandwich with cucumber sticks and wedges of tomato then nectarine pieces and then a few spoonfuls of apple and pear puree.

He was weaned at 17 weeks due to reflux, took to it incredibly well and has been around 98th centile since birth so that probably is a lot of food compared to most 6mo.

PS word of warning on dry things like rice cakes if you're LO has any teeth, my DS front two are completely through and he just bites big bits off rather than sucking them.

I bought these biscuits as they are individually wrapped and Ds isn't really eating enough to justify opening a large packet and he sat happily gumming and mashing it for ages while I chatted to a friend. It did look a bit like I was giving him a penguin bar in the wrapper though!

I would just add that things like these biscuits are not necessarily the best food to give babies.

This article is an interesting read about the high amounts of added sugar in products like rusks, baby biscuits etc.

Sounds good - mine went crazy for rice cakes though most fell on the floor or was mushed! He also had some more veg purée and banana purée. He LOVES being spoon fed! First ds much preferred finger foods and rarely opened his mouth for an approaching spoon but not this one! Funny how they have such strong and different preferences.

Can I ask about melon and cucumber - what happens to them as they're chewed? They scare me as I fear big hard chunks could break off rather than just mushing up like softer foods.

I started at 23 weeks (he was clearly after my food - trying to get it, whining when I ate etc...) Did worry about it and I guess I still do but I went with my gut and his signals - and from day one he loved it. I was expecting a funny face and the odd teaspoon going down but he's now 24 weeks and munching through anything and everything, baby porridge in the morning, fruit purée at lunch and veg purée at tea, and all the usual breastfeeds too (!). He actually chases the spoon around trying to get it faster (even when he's never tried it before!). I've also tried finger foods, agree that cucumber sticks go down well and also broccoli- they don't break into chunks. I've given him a few pieces of toast too, but I'm not sure there's much going down...open to other ideas?

Re cucumber sticks. She chews on them and usually just sucks on it and the seeds disappear first and she bruises the flesh down if you know what I mean. She will break bits off but if they are to big or not soft enough she will spit them out.

we were at a birthday party today and she demolished a couple of bread sticks!

I agree that biscuits shouldn't be a major part of their diet, but that is why I bought the individual wrapped ones, so that they could be given at a large time interval without going bad.

But maybe I am more relaxed about these things now, I think my pfb only had homemade stuff. But I thought it was good to have something other than rice cakes in my handbag.

Oh and I keep meaning to make sweet potatoe chips/wedges (just cut into right shape, par boiled and roasted with a bit of oil) my older kids used to love those as babies.

I'd forgotten sweet potato wedges - we had them so often at one point I think we got sick of them. First ds loved them too.

This morning he's had a little porridge and a chomp on a homemade (non-sugary (!) ) waffle.

Everything in moderation though, eh? Bread has salt and sugar gasp yet a couple of bits of toast during the course of a week isn't a worry. Fruit is very sugary and can be damaging to teeth.

Anyway, I had a very healthy, controlled diet as a child, especially where sweets and biscuits were concerned but as an adult I've never quite got over the excitement at the freedom to 'treat' myself whenever I wish.

Our 6mo ds has had...

Baby porridge with tiny fruit pieces for breakfast, with a peach, pear and apple compot mixed in

Cauliflower cheese for lunch, with ellas kitchen purple one for pudding

Mango, banana, peach and yoghurt for dinner

We started probably a month ago, and he's pretty keen as long as we get the timing of meals right. Still having all normal bm too

Glad to hear another one with a good appetite - our ds has only been going a week but gets very excited and demanding at family meal times. I keep reading advice saying 'take it slow' and 'build up to 3 meals a day by 8/9 months' but I'm offering something at every meal time as he looked so desperately keen when we all had food and he didn't. I hope that's ok! I'm not feeling so adventurous with the BLW as I did last time - I offered sticks of banana at breakfast today and he struggled to deal with the chunks that broke off. I'm willing to accept that it was gagging and not choking but it was silent and he was obviously unhappy and found it hard. Going to stick with purees now till he's 10!

So today he's had a ting amount of baby porridge with pear purée, taste of banana for breakfast.

Ella's kitchen veg pouch - about 2/3rds out and about at lunchtime. A couple of rice cakes which he slobbered and chomped on till they dropped on the floor.

Half pot of natural yoghurt with fruit purée at tea time.

Ds has had papaya, melon and watermelon at breakfast, feeding himself big chunks, although most feel on the floor. Lunch was some mashed up banana on a loaded son which he snatches to put in his mouth himself. Dinner was some cucumber, red pepper and steamed squash, feeding himself..... He's very keen and eager to just get stuck in and not remotely interested in purees!!!!

Today good old cucumber sticks and about half a petit filus (sp) which she allowed me to help her spoon into and around her mouth.

We shared a baby bel on the way out of the super market - success.

Dinner scrambled egg - not impressed. Raspberries, thumbs up, and half a slice of soreen which she was over the moon with.

Have made a point of offering bf before solids today as yesterday she only had maybe 3 quick feeds in the day. Made up for it over night though.

The day before yesterday we also seemed to have dropped milk feeds far too quickly but then yesterday he hardly ate a thing. I'm finding that he gets very frustrated and angry at finger foods - despite the fact that he won't be very hungry due to having had bf not that long beforehand. I'm going to try spoon feeding him something first then offering finger food. I had been doing it the other way round to give me a chance to get everyone else's meals on the table etc.

This morning he's had a chew on some toast - v frustrated and angry. Offered him a little porridge but was past the point of really being interested.

Big pieces of the toast came off in his mouth and the first time he started to shove another piece in and I worried about it pushing the first piece further back so stopped him until he spat it out. The second time it seemed to be stuck to the roof of his mouth and did some gagging and retching - I wasn't sure how to help him out there.
I don't know how we'll ever manage to be brave enough to try hard things like cucumber or cheese! Still wary with these with ds1 now!!

My DS is nearly 7 months but he generally has porridge with fruit for breakfast, finger food for lunch - today it was homemade chicken liver pate on toast then a bit of my (healthy, sugar-free) muffin. He's having cod, tomato and sweet potato purée for tea. Plenty of breastmilk in between as well. I'm lucky as he seems to love his food and doesn't care if it's pureed or offered whole - though he does struggle with some harder-to-bite things. Toast, omelette or pancakes have been most successful finger foods so far, though he's pretty good with steamed veg or chips (bad mother!) too.

DS was 7 months yesterday. He had toast this morning, slept through lunch and will probably have veg sticks for dinner as I've just been to aldi!

Big hits so far have been banana (he chokes a lot on it though but saves himself IYSWIM), sweet potato chips and baby corn.

I didn't do BLW with the other two (5&3) so it's a learning curve!
