SIX FREAKING WEEKS
my jaw hit the floor
"and it hasn't done him any harm"
nono that's right apart from the raging eczema all his life and the lousy digestion
"it depends on the individual child. I couldn't have waited any longer."
how do you even give a six week old baby solids??
it has made me very cross actually

My DH was out on solids when he was still in hospital after being born. He was about 10lbs at birth and didn't feed well.
Yes - it is shocking to us but advice changes so quickly. I'm sure in another few years it will all be different again Smile

Thats exactly what I'm saying Harpsi do what you feel comfortable with, somewhere down the line someone will tell you that you got it wrong but if you have done what you feel is best then how can you be wrong?

My Mum has had 7 and she could tell us all how things changed from having no1 up to no7.

JoolsToo · 21/05/2006 22:46

It may be anecdotal but even on this thread there are stories of the two opposites - babies so called affected by early weaning and then the contrary example - and we see it all the time on mn.

Mercy · 21/05/2006 22:47

Harpsi, I would say your mother is fairly unusual. My mum is an educated woman who like many others believed that what the dr said was true.

katymac, for how often I would comtemplate giving coke/lemonade I really don't think it's an issue.

Jools, Im sure my mother would agree with you!

harmonicacarrier · 21/05/2006 22:49

yeah, I suppose so
I suppose I never grasped that when they said early weaning they meant SIX WEEKS
I shall shut up about it though now Blush

My brother was weaned at about 6 weeks too - because he was a big baby. I suspect I was a few weeks later. (No allergies but I know that's just anecdotal.) My mum was delighted when I gave ds solids - at 16 weeks, as advised (doh) - because she thought he could have done with it, oh months before that.
THe sugar water was a frequent tip from her too.

sparklemagic · 21/05/2006 23:24

Ha, that's nothing, my MIL tells me with DH he was TWO WEEKS OLD..........

apparently she bought this type of rusky stuff from the chemist that you mushed up in their milk. [grins while watching many and varied mumsnetters clutching at their chests and asking for their pills emoticon] Grin

how times have changed, huh.

suzi2 · 22/05/2006 20:45

My mum stopped breastfeeding me at 12wks (unlike my brothers who she fed until 6 months) and she feels guilty now with all the new research out as I am the one with allergies/asthma/eczema. I think we were all babyriced at the same age - about 3-4 months?

Anyway, I'm so bad with guilt that I'm doing everything by the book as I don;t want to blame myself! Grin DHs gran gave me a really hard time at Xmas when i wouldn't let her give DS (then 5 months) some trifle.

Yep - times have changed. It's a shame that some HVs info still hasn't caught up though. It's also a shame that some people ignore evidence because they are doing what was done years ago under the "it didn't do me any harm" blanket.

acnebride · 22/05/2006 20:56

dh had rice in his milk on day 3 due to advice from hospital midwife.

sfxmum · 22/05/2006 20:58

re first message, so did my mil, egg apparently was on the menu.
quite shoxked that dd was not having 'proper food' (anythibg other than breastmilk) at 5.5 monthsShock

Piggiesmum · 22/05/2006 21:25

My mum loves telling me how me and db were on chocolate pudding at 6 weeks, but it's more of an anecdote than an critisism type comment is totally accepting that things have changed and we do it differently. MIL is pretty good too and even came to my rescue when GMIL offered to make up some sugar water for ds at 2 months.
